What kind of discipline is this? now Tzahal will have leftists oriented soldiers wearing Kaffiyahs as scarves.
2. What's next?
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (01.12.07)
Soldiers will only be allowed to pee, if the duration is no less than 30 seconds on base and 20 seconds off base??? Or maybe that's vice versa. Geezus! If they win wars, let 'em wear feather boas and garter belts. Gal Hirsch in a garter belt? Wooohooo, what a visual.
3. Increase their salary by 25 %
bentham ,   singapore   (01.12.07)
Give them bonus twice a year. Take care of your IDF men ! Dont abuse the IDF soldiers ! Every soldier must be near to your heart and soul ! Like your own child !
4. Kaffiyehs
Abdullah ,   Morroco   (01.12.07)
No kaffiyehs permitted only black colored scarves.
5. Scarf as a fashion accessory
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (01.12.07)
Issue IDF scarf and make it part of the uniform. Soldiers should not wear any article of clothing that is not IDF issue. This includes kippah.

8. What is the big deal?
Jellybean ,   Chicago   (01.12.07)
It is part of a uniform for the WINTER! Im sure people wear scarves in the WINTER to keep warm. The military has a uniform, why all the fuss. In the Navy we has Summer whites and Navy Blues (for winter). The uniform maybe strict but that is just the way it is.
9. Why couldn't they wear scarves before?
Andre ,   Bazra, Iraq   (01.12.07)
I'm not Jewish. Israel is a Marxist police state. What's the deal here?
10. What's the scandal?
Paolo Ortenzi ,   Rome, Italy   (01.12.07)
US Troops, UK troops and even troops of my country operating in Iraq and Afghanistan are wearing "Shemag" scarfe to be used in case of need. Colours are strictly ruled: black and green in winter/wood enviroment, sand in summer/desert enviroment.

Ironcandle ,   Atlanta, GA   (01.12.07)
You people need to lighten up a bit. Our fighter pilots used to wear white scarves whilst shooting at Germans. Very fetching look, if I do say so.

Although that might be a little far-fetched for Israel, but hopefully, if these soldiers ever got into 2 feet of snow, subzero temps and 40mph winds, nobody would give a rat's a-- with which color and what type garb they'd keep warm and functioning. In Dec. of '44, during the Battle of the Bulge and the worst winter in 100 years, I saw some strangely decked out German soldiers, and I bet, the GI's weren't exactly 100% military issue, either. Since the latter won, I can only assume that they were more fashionably color-coordinated. Yeah, right!
13. scarves!!?? LOL
rodonna ,   colorado usa   (01.12.07)
You can stay warm on the base; but you will have to freeze off base. Function or fashion....Scarves are definitly functional

You bring up some memories!!!! Those scarves might have been fetching, but super wealth was getting your hands on a white, silk parachute. The flying fortress, "Solid Sender" got shot down over the Siegfried line in Sept. '44, and one of the crew landed in a cabbage patch half a mile from our house. We even fed that man before the local Nazis demanded we turn him over or get carted off. I was barely 6, but I can still picture those overalls. Since my father had been gone/dead for 4 years, I thought for sure that out of all these men dropping out of the sky, my mother would get interested in one of them and get me another dad. No such luck! Things went straight downhill from there, but that's ancient history.

You are right. But I don't think that was military issued. Sometimes you take what you need to survive fashion or not. Today everything is military issued, the Navy has white scarves, black shoes, black purses and even earrings! which look like crap and I chose to never wear. Again it does not matter what color they are. In the winter they should wear scarves to keep warm. It is part of the uniform.

20. I wore scarves for 23 years in the I.D.F.
jason white ,   afula,israel   (01.12.07)
It was cold and no one ever said a word. And there were soldiers both Jewish and non-Jewish that used kaffiyehs as scarves in the winter or to cover the nose and mouths in dust storms.
21. Scarves are in. Even Saddam wore one at his last appearance
Alan ,   SA   (01.12.07)
22. Reminds me.....
Ronnie ,   Gedera, Israel   (01.12.07)
of something that happened to me over 50 years ago when I was in the U.S. Army in Korea. It was pouring rain one day in Seoul, and I was walking with an umbrella. A Military Police jeep pulled up, and the M.P. told me to get rid of the umbrella. He said if the army wanted me to use an umbrella, they would have issued me one. He didn't write me up....just warned me to not let it happen again. So much for stupid army regulations.
23. Scarves in the IDF
Renee, NYC   (01.13.07)
I don't get it. The IDF was always much less strict about a lot of things than our military was, for instance. At one time, soldiers could have long hair, they didn't have to pretend they were straight if they were gay, there was no prohibition against officers fraternizing with enlisted men, and they didn't have to salute at everything that moved. So, what's up with this scarf nonsense all of a sudden? Frankly, it's an issue that hardly seems worthy of anybody's time.
24. FOCUS! IDF FOCUS!!!
Philippa ,   Johannesburg   (01.13.07)
Let's keep our eye on the ball IDF and focus on the REALissues. (And in any case fashion is good for the psychological wellbeing of our soldiers :-)
