1. More Jews after the War
Allan ,   Phoenix USA   (01.18.07)
Bulgaria also had more Jews after the war due to the then King's bravery in refusing the Nazi's requests to hand over Jews. This makes 2nd countries in this category. That is, if you leave out the 12000 or so Jews that perished from Macedonia & Thrace which at the time was administered by Bulgaria.
2. wrong
nell ,   switzerland   (01.18.07)
Mr. Salberg got that wrong. The only occupied country with more Jewish citizens after WWII was Bulgaria.

6. Article Inaccurate - Jews Were Killed
Joshua ,   New York, NY, USA   (01.18.07)
Yes, overall Albania was a far better place for Jews during WWII than many other parts of Europe. However, according to Yad Vashem (http://www1.yadvashem.org/odot_pdf/microsoft%20word%20-%205725.pdf), Jews were killed in Albanian/Axis-occupied Kosovo. It is estimated that approximately 200-some Jews died. This also does not take into consideration the tens of thousands of other civilians (ethnic Serbians, Albanians, Roma and Sinti and others) who were killed simply because of their ethnicity by various Axis, Allied and partisan factions in the region during World War II who we should remember as well.
7. Jew loving Albanians ?

And many Jews from outside were able to find refuge there.
10. Honouring Muslims who fought against Nazism
Cat ,   London, UK   (01.20.07)
The lowest rate of Jewish survival in ex-Yugoslavia in World War II was in Macedonia, which was under Bulgarian control, and where 90 percent of Jews were deported and killed. The highest rate was in Kosovo, where 62 percent of Jews survived. Serbia and Croatia (the latter including Bosnia-Hercegovina) both had high levels of Jewish martyrdom during the Holocaust. The Serbian capital, Beograd, was declared by the Germans the first Judenrein, or “Jew-free” city in Europe. In Bosnia, the infamous Bosnian Waffen SS units played no role in the removal of Jews on their territory, which was carried out by Germans and Croats. The Bosnian Waffen SS units were assigned to combat Muslim and Serb Partisans, including residents of villages from where many of the recruits themselves originated. They were reluctant to participate in such actions, having enlisted in the Waffen SS on the mistaken belief that such service would resemble that of the Bosnian gendarmerie under the Habsburg empire. They were sent by the Germans to France for retraining. There they mutinied against their Nazi officers and attempted to join the French Partisans, the only known example of a Waffen SS rebellion.By 1944, most of them had joined the Yugoslav Partisans. In addition, the Bosnian Muslim clerics issued three declarations publicly denouncing Croat-Nazi collaborationist measures against Jews and Serbs: that of Sarajevo in October 1941, of Mostar in 1941, and of Banja Luka on November 12, 1941. These fascinating documents have never been translated and published in English, but I am completing work on them for publication now. As to the Albanians, while it is true that the Albanian Waffen SS Skanderbeg division turned some 210 Jews in Kosovo over to the Nazis, not one Jew was handed over in Albania itself, which was the only country to come out of the second world war with a larger Jewish population than it had at the beginning of the war. This fact has been noted by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and by Yad Vashem in Israel, where Albanian Muslims have been honored as “righteous Gentiles.” http://www.frontpagemag.com/articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=17416

12. #2 Wroing: Bulgaria deported Jews from parts of its territor
Semsem ,   New York, USA   (01.21.07)
Nell from Switzerland. Bulgaria did deport Jews from its newly acquired territories. The Nazi Government running Bulgaria also sent Jews to work camps. However it is correct that 50,000 lives were saved due to protests.
13. Minor correction to Talkback 10 (about Macedonia)
Joshua ,   Brooklyn, NY   (01.22.07)
Having lived in Macedonia for several years and being close to its Jewish community, it was actually 98% of its Jewish population that was killed in the Holocaust through the deportation to Treblinka (not 90%). It is the higher percentage of decimation to a Jewish community during the Holocaust. There are approximately 210 Jews in Macedonia now, almost all of whom are in Skopje (except for one elderly man in Bitola, two brothers who recently discovered their Jewish roots who live in Tetovo, and maybe a handful of others scattered elsewhere). What is wonderful is that although it is a tiny Jewish community, it is an active one with a lot of young people playing a central role.
