1. Has-been romance author tries publicity stunt
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (01.24.07)
Dan and Egged should discontinue the "mehadrin" lines. If haredi men want segregated buses, they can start their own private bus line. This would never be a problem in the first place if Dan and Egged did not want to crush competition from a "mehadrin" bus company. Ladies, there are plenty of buses available with open seating. DO NOT RIDE THE MEHADRIN BUS.
2. we're a-movin' on up
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (01.24.07)
we finally got a piece of the pie... you go girls.
3. 100% right! What a shame on all of us!
Zvi ,   Jerusalem   (01.24.07)
Just like I am against the way Muslims treat their women, I am sickened by how women are treated by Haradim, and even some "modern" orthodox (of which I belong).....
4. Names of 5 women who signed the petition
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (01.24.07)
5 women, wow, that really represents the entire haredi community. Here they are: 1. Naomi Ragen (trashy romance author) 2. Miriam Shear (nutbag) 3. Tzivia Greenfield (Meretz party hack) 4. Shulamit Aloni (just as "haredi" as the first 3) 5. Sheila Brovlofsky (MY MOM)
5. I am ashamed
Sagi ,   Israel   (01.24.07)
that people with this mentality who deride one half of humanity and cause them pain, mental anguish and humiliation actually call themselves Jews. There is no valid explanation or excuse for these practices and they should be outlawed by legislation. Anyone who does not accept this is duly invited to return to the Polish or Russian village of his ancestors and continue these brutal practices where their forefathers left off. Not in Israel. That woman, without whom there would be no existence, is treated in such a way is deplorable.
6. KOSHER BUSES???? HOW DO YOU COOK THEM?
stude ham ,   outremont, canada   (01.24.07)
The women are to be commended for fighting against this outrageous stupidities of haredi logic. Alabama legislation of the pre Rosa Parks era has no place anywhere in Israel! Let those Haredi who believe divine wrath will consume them whole should they (heaven forbid) even as much as see a woman, let these idiots boycott the buses and let's see how far they'll be willing to walk for their deus.
7. We all know Rosa Parks, don't we?
Suzanne   (01.24.07)
8. UP YNET"S ALLEY
DAVID ,   JUDEA   (01.24.07)
Altough i am also against so called kosher buses. This kind of articles against haredi (read religious jews) is what ynet enjoys the most. While the country is falling apart with corruption and scandals,it is always good to fan the flames of hatred against these people. It is an old tactic,to pull away the attention from were it is realy needed. I can just sit back and wait for for hatefull talkbacks to pour in.
9. Aparthied
zznhl   (01.24.07)
In a country where all races are permitted to sit wherever they like on busses, only Women are low enough to be discriminated against. A Great Jewish sage said "Bend to to talk to women.." You Haridim should bow to your Women after what you make them put up with!!! (I am of the male persuasion myself!)
10. "In your face" yields "in your face"
F ,   Israel   (01.24.07)
I suspect that Naomi Ragen's harsh experience was largely a result of an "in your face" attitude on her part. Recently my husband and I rode a mehadrin bus from Bnai Brak to Jerusalem late in the evening. When we boarded the empty bus at the beginning of its run, we sat together around the middle of the bus. As it filled up, at least one other couple did the same, while in general, women sat in the back and men in front. Not one person ever even suggested to either of us couples that we split up. Sometimes we get the treatment we ask for.
11. Haredi segregated buses
Z. Tornek ,   Zefat   (01.24.07)
The argument against segregated buses is 100% valid, but why connect with the reform movement? There are plenty of orthodox lawyers to do the job.
12. You go girls!!!
Yael ,   Haifa   (01.24.07)
Thank you! And Kyle there are a number of places where the only, and I do mean only, buses that run are the Mehadrin buses. There are no "open seating" options for people living in or needing to travel to these places. It is a crime in my opinion and such discrimination has no place in our country.
13. PUT THE LADIES UP FRONT
Sunny Galim ,   Ashdod Israel   (01.24.07)
Simple. Men to the back and ladies take the front seats. If there is not enough room the men should stand, This will show how Jewish men respect and value women.
14. to the 5 women........
Danielle ,   Centre   (01.24.07)
I very much hope that by your courageaus actions, more will follow in your steps to fight to disallow this disgusting, anti-democratic, and backward situation. STOP IT NOW.
15. to #10 and Sagi
freejay ,   Israel   (01.24.07)
I totally agree with you about instigation on these womens behalf, even though i do believe in equal rights. Sagi, what is your problem? You seem to keep making comments attacking Haredi with a passion. I feel you are overly exaggerating the small problem Israel has with its extremist minority that might i add, dont use violence except on rare instances. The biggest threat in Israel is the Lefties ruining this beautiful country, evacuating people and giving away land to our enemies. Please get your priorities right and stop making a mountain out of a molehill with these small haredi problems.
16. Religous coercion
M ,   Israel   (01.24.07)
As a religiously observant woman I know that we have been hijacked into a subordinate position by the combined forces of an Ultra-Orthodox humra, and Egged Bus Co. who are only looking at the "bottom line". The Israeli lawmakers must deal with this problem urgently. Just substitute the word "Arab" for "women" and it becomes very clear that we have a scandalous situation which shows every sign of growing.
17. Pay no attention to Olmert's crimes
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (01.24.07)
As with the indictment of President Katsav, this is another misdirection by YNet to take the focus off the crimes committed by Olmert and the ruling coalition. Along comes an author of trashy romance desperate for attention, hoping to be invited on the "Oprah" show she loves so much. If Naomi wrote decent literature instead of crap maybe more people would read her books without her having to resort to stupid publicity stunts to get attention.
18. naomi ragen
ronit ,   neve tzion,Israel   (01.24.07)
That particular bus line has been seperate seating for a while. Naomi ragen knew full well what she was doing. And BTW, she is far from haredi, she is just barely orthodox.
19. Comments from outside Israel
Israeli Citizen   (01.24.07)
The talkbacks from outside Israel do not seem to take into account that there is NOT always a choice of bus for the offended women, and more routes are being subjected to this discriminatory system. Objections from high-profile women do not lessen the insult to us all, including men, who presumably live in homes inhabited by wives and daughters.
20. #6 Kosher Just Means Proper
(01.24.07)
21. Do what the late Rosa Parks did. Refuse to give up
Allan ,   US   (01.24.07)
your seat. This is a matter of civil rights and not religious doctrine.
22. Disgraceful
Sidney ,   USA   (01.24.07)
Are the Haredi really Jewish?
23. Taliban stan
atmawi   (01.24.07)
24. Ever wonder why religious get a bad name like Taliban??
mehadrin debunker ,   yesha   (01.24.07)
1.Mehadrin is term to be used only for labling kosher food. 2.Buses are public domain for any citizen of the state regardless of religion, etc. Who's the total idiot that invented this nonsense of segregated buses and who are the brainwashed sheep that embraced this moronic distortion of judaism, (forbidden by the torah). Shame on each & every one of you for creating this taliban like imitation.
25. #24
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (01.24.07)
Nice post, I must say. I live in Tel Aviv, and the MEHARDIN is also used for non-segregated buses, if they don't have advertising with - horrors! - pictures of women
26. #5 - Is Equality too much to ask for?
Kate ,   Jerusalem   (01.24.07)
"Sometimes we get the treatment we ask for"? This arguement is often used by abused women to excuse their violent spouses. No woman should be forced to move to the back of the bus so a "man" can sit there instead. It's not halachic AND it's disgraceful. It doesn't matter if a woman is agressive or passive - if she pays, and a seat is available, she has every right in the world to sit in it.
27. Mehadrin Buses: Get Naturei Karta & Taliban Seal of Approval
Mehadrin Stan ,   israel   (01.24.07)
28. #7 - SUZANNE - Rosa Parks Said No To Bus Segregation
stude ham ,   outremont, canada   (01.24.07)
Rosa Parks calmly said NO to a request that she move to the back of the segregated Alabama bus. She was arrested for breaking the Alabama law. The fury created over this incident launched the 1960's desegregation movement in the US. For her courage, Rosa Parks was remembered on her death by being the first ordinary US citizen allowed to lie in state in the Rotunda of the Capitol in Washington DC. That's who was Rosa Parks.
29. Sexism & Opression
Cobran ,   EU   (01.24.07)
Do these uggly things come from the same root in Israel? How many ultra-ortodox is serving in the IDF in occupied West Bank?
30. Kol Hakavod ladies! And Kyle, read:
Morris ,   USA, Israel in Feb.   (01.24.07)
Good job women, you should fight this illegal oppression. There is no question, under the law of Israel, that this is actually illegal. Kyle, I usually agree with a lot of what you say and think you make a lot of sense. In fact, even for this article, your comments in Post 1 show you fundamentally support what the women are doing. However, then you go on with ad hominem attacks against some of these women and accuse YNet of intentionally not reporting "more important events" like Katsav. If you look at the main page, Katsav is featured in the largest spot. Basically, what I'm saying is, keep writing your talkbacks because they make sense, but don't be afraid to take a solid stance agreeing or disagreeing with an article/movement. You don't have to "qualify" your support for what these women are doing by bashing something related to them. Just support them! And if your upset with YNet's coverage, write a letter to the editor --- this is not the appropriate forum to voice your concerns.
