1. Beer Sheva: 40% kosher, 37% non-kosher - and the rest?
(01.29.07)
"In ... Beer Sheba there are more kosher restaurants than non-kosher ones – 40 percent as opposed to 37 percent." What about the remaining 23 % ? If 23% of the restaurants in B.S. are neither kosher nor non-kosher, what else are they ?
2.  Shrimps rule the country
N. K. ,   Here   (01.29.07)
Just look at the (joke) 'ruling party'. Shrimps don't have a back bone either... 'Ya got wot 'ya asked for folks. We're ruled by a ham string, and it shows.
3. Great one #1! HAHAHA...
Israel ,   Israeli   (01.29.07)
4. Wonder if the manna had a certificate
Shiloh ,   Israel   (01.29.07)
Thank G-d most don't pay money to a rabbi to 'oversee' their business. I don't think Moshe, nor haShem ever intended it to be a matrix of control over people. Eat Torah kosher and skip the rabbi's and we will all be closer to the Torah!!!
5. Jerusalem stats
Stan ,   Jerusalem   (01.29.07)
Wonder if the fact that many Jerusalem restaurants are Palestinian may have impacted the stats.
6. Looks like they included non jewish restaurants in study
gabriela ben ari ,   jerusalem   (01.30.07)
and nothing about it is said in the report
7. Right on #4! My philosophy exactly!
Morris ,   USA, Israel in Feb.   (01.30.07)
8. #1 How silly of you...
Uriel ,   Croatia   (01.30.07)
They constitute the special cases of kosherish non kosher restaurant: you can ask for non kosher food there and you will get it. You can ask for a kosher food and - you will get it! Further more - you can ask for mixtures, like, you can ask for non kosher meat, like pork, together with kosher additive, like kosher wine. Even there is spotted a special kind of pork - KOSHER PORK! Unseen in other places, I know, but - it's part of tourist offer, so... Everything is purchasable!
9. #4
mark ,   ca   (01.30.07)
One of my family members,25 years of age, opened small restaurant in Jerusalem. He have to pay NIS 1200 a month to keep license for kashrut.
10. Kosher certificates 2nd biggest source of income for Charedi
RyanH ,   ashdod   (01.30.07)
The biggest source of income is Kolel stipend (doing nothing) Second is blackmail for kosher certificates.
11. "Only third of Israel's restaurants kosher"
Michael Steiner   (01.30.07)
And I suspect less than a third of Israelis really keep kosher, so that works out just fine. And #4 is absolutely right. All this rabinical "supervision" is nothing but a money-grabbing racket.
12.  There were no shrimps in the desert guys
sue ,   TA   (01.30.07)
just REAL Jews! Because of the shrimpigs and bullies, (style #4and #11) who rule the country, I am forced to pay for Kashrut. What a nerve. Shrimpig crowd decide for all of us, where we eat, and they moan and wail about about religious coercion. What JEWISH chutzpah they have... But it beats vomiting, so three cheers for Kashrut. If that's what it takes to keep 'em away, I do so with culinary pleasure and much 'tay avon'. Bon Appetit all you real Jews. We're happy and they're not. Crazy no?
13. Kashrut.
zznhl   (01.30.07)
The main reason that resturants serve kosher food with out the certificate is that although they recognise the need for kashrut and are willing to abide by the religiouse edicts they are not willing to pay ridiculouse prices to corrupt "rabbis" for the privelege! Our religious Authorities remind me of the corruption that plageued the Holy Temple towards the end of the 2nd Temple period!
14. #6 - Well of course
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (01.30.07)
The survey was on all restaurants in Israel, not just the ones run by Jews.
15. Would you like us to be like Saudi Arabia
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (01.30.07)
where there is a special police force to check that there are no "forbidden foods" in your house?
16. We have a special force already, #15
sue ,   TA   (01.30.07)
in our homes. It's called the Torah, and we love it. It's incredibly helpful on so many occasions that crop up daily. What a guide book ! It's really addictive. I'm so grateful as I'd be lost without it, eating all kind of weird slimy stuff probably.
17. #16 - Good, then there is no need for legislation
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (01.30.07)
18. It's not rocket science!!
Shiloh   (01.30.07)
Looks like sue is the only 'real jew" here! This is a pure sign of a soul of erev rav as she will be surely disappointed when she finds out how much erev rav has lied to her, leading her to follow men, idolotry and not haShem. You can train a monkey to do tricks and say the monkey is now holy, but it's still a monkey (well trained now) but it does not change the soul. Erev rav will always have an idolotrous soul, no matter how many tricks you teach it to accomplish. Now quit with the bs.
19. #17 My point exactly
bye 4 now   (01.30.07)
Legislation is a result of secular coercion
20. Thai in Israel
Jarad ,   Des Moines, IA   (01.30.07)
Thai in Israel? Give me a break. Almost all of those 'Thai' restaurants just serve crappy Chinese food. If you're lucky they might even put a basil leaf on it.
21. # 13 When power is excercised
Sagi ,   Israel   (01.30.07)
over some people by others it inevitably leads to corruption. All power is the same no matter what its source or justification. There are no exceptions to this rule including elected leaders and authorities. they just happen to be the "best" of the bunch. The Torah is the source of the power that the Rabbis wield over us, they claim this source to be "divine" in order to give it absolute and unassailable authority. This is the reason as to why they are corrupt and they will always be corrupt.
22. To sewer #18
From sue   (01.30.07)
What ARE they feeding you? If you eat rubbish, I guess that's what you talk, too. See everyone, the guy's frothin' at the mouth, and that sure 'aint 'kosher'. So be warned. Very sad, I agree...Whereas...
23. Response to #1
Boris ,   Chicago   (01.30.07)
They didn't mean percentages, they meant actual numbers of restaurants in Beer Sheva.
24. 11 #64 % of jews keep kosher in Israel to some extent
(01.31.07)
source J'lem post a few years ago
25. Restaurants in US require health certification
Steve ,   USA   (01.31.07)
B"H Is there some separate certification for health verus kashrut? I thought the kashrut certification was the way the Rabbis certified proper food handling. The good news is that 1/3rd of the restaurants have this certification so at least there are a large number of places to eat at for those looking for the certification. Some look at how empty the cup is and others look at how full it is. Cheers.
26. baseless hatred as usual by erev rav
Shiloh ,   Israel   (01.31.07)
Maybe you would like to remove both feet from ones mouth, I eat Torah kosher, bet you don't
27. dear rav erev shee low
shoe   (01.31.07)
see your shrink......again.Don't give up..yet . THEN, take a class in English and only THEN write to an English talkback column. Maybe then, one day, someone, somewhere, MAY understand your gibberish. Have a kosher and happy life, rabbi erev.
28. food
Fussion ,   Israel   (01.31.07)
The writer should have listed all the eateries instead of writing about boring stats.
29. One third is enough
charles ,   petach tikva   (01.31.07)
If there would be a bigger demand for kosher restaurants , more will probably open , or not kosher would change . There is no need as most of the outgoiing people are seculars , who don't look at a kashrut certificate .
30. Kosher certificates are the biggest ripoff
Antonio ,   Haifa   (01.31.07)
Torah tells us what kosher and what's not.
