1. No surprise
Paul ,   austin, USA   (01.31.07)
FIrst of all, the memorial was poorly designed. Unless you're looking for it, you wouldn't even know what it's supposed to be. Second, ANY public area in a metropolis is sure to get wazzed on at night. I suggest getting shoach deniers and neo nazis to clean it up on a daily basis. Y'know, community service and public humiliation rolled into one.
2. Some people have no shame!
DR ,   Florida, USA   (01.31.07)
It is sad to see that anti-semitism is alive and well in Europe. These people have not learned anything from history and neither will their kids. Very sad!!!
3. SHOCKER
black death   (01.31.07)
Come on people, what did you expect from the Germans, really? And they tried to cover it up? I'm Shocked, SHOCKED!!!!
4. israeli should urinate on german's embassy wall in tel aviv.
stephane ,   france   (01.31.07)
5. STOP WHINING ABOUT THE SHOA - THEY ARE SICK OF HEARING IT
andrew ,   miami,fl   (01.31.07)
EVERYONE IS SICK OF HEARING IT THE ONLY TIME ISRAEL OR THE JEWISH PEOPLE EVER GOT RESPECT WAS WHEN THEY WERE BRASH AND CREATING A FUTURE AND A COUNTRY AS THEY RETURNED HOME TO ISRAEL LESSON IN POINT - YOU ARE EITHER A VITIM OR A VICTOR - WE LIVE IN DARWINS WORLD
6. Still Bothered By Its Existance In The First Place
David ,   Israel   (01.31.07)
To this day I don't understand why anyone other than Israel should have a holocaust memorial other than to assuage their consciences with a token gesture. I understand having a holocaust unit in 20th century history courses as without it such courses would be incomplete, but a memorial? Our dead are ours to remember and honor, not theirs - and especially not the nation that butchered them. Despite the fact that diaspora Jews were behind the creation of most of these sites I'm still annoyed by their existence. No amount of sugar can coat the pill of what the Nazis did, and what the nations sat back and watched them do. Why should we give them something they can point to and say: "see, really we're good people, because after we sat back and let them kill six million of your people, we built this lame building to forgive ourselves with.
7. Most people don't even know what it is
Antonio ,   Haifa   (01.31.07)
It has nothing to do with antisemitism, for the large part. Like #1 said, the memorial is poorly desinged.
8. If it's Innocent can be accepted
semsem ,   New York, USA   (01.31.07)
If it's "innocent" then quite frankly I can accept it. What can one do when nature calls. The memorial is huge and one can hide behind the stones at night.
9. yeah
thommy ,   germany   (01.31.07)
yeah but still a minority i know we should all blame them for what they done and racism and antisemitism is big here but still germany is now democratic and in general against this
10. #6 Agree
Iossef ,   J'lem, Israel   (01.31.07)
I agree absolutely with David. I would say anything different. I agree word for word.
11. Not acceptable practice
Steve ,   USA   (01.31.07)
B"H Usually people who are homeless end up urinating places that are not toilets. We should be concerned that such people are not able to go bathroom anywhere else in Germany. This is a problem that needs a solution. Perhaps a public restroom can be maintained nearby open 24 hours with janatorial service.
12. And who says that Germans are no longer barbarians?
Rick ,   Montreal   (01.31.07)
13. #5 And we'r sick of your blogs and YNET publishing them
gabriela ben ari ,   jerusalem   (01.31.07)
14. I am not sure it was anti semitism
Hebrew girl ,   USA   (02.01.07)
although many Germans may be anti-semetic, I don't know if that is the reason that the memorial was (despicably) used as a urinal. Urinating in public places is a foreign concept to Americans (and I assume Israelis) but I lived in Europe for 3 years and I saw it happen quite often in clear daylight and they were not always homeless. One man did it right in front of his little daughter in a side street! Gross but true!
15. # 13, #5 is right.
Avinoam Cohen ,   Los Angeles, CA   (02.01.07)
As a patriotic Israeli and proud Zionist, I agree with what #5 has to say. We as a nation need to stop living in the past and focus on our future survival as a country in an extremist region. The Holocaust was a horrible tragedy but we need to move on and make sure Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas don't declare a second one. Nobody likes a whiner. The issues at hand are as follows: -Get olmert, peretz, and livni OUT NOW -Reform the IDF. Untie T'zahal's hands and let them do what they're trained to do. -Gather the courage to act unilaterally against our enemies The next war we fight will be of biblical proportions and without strong leadership and national unity, we might as well start reserving burial plots today.
16. Nothing to Do With Holocaust
Jerry Sussman ,   Alexandria, USA   (02.01.07)
Urinating at the Berlin Holocaust Memorial, however poorly designed it may be, has nothing at all to do with the Holocaust. It has everything to do with disrespect and anti-semitism. Common practice in Europe to uriniate in public? Bullcrap! When my mother was buried in a Jewish cemetary in New York, I inately sensed apprehension at the sight and presence of the two stereotypical and obviously East Eurpean Catholic grave diggers. After I had left the grave site, my brother asked whether I had seen the two urinating on my mother's grave as we walked away. Fortunately, I had not, for I certainly would have cracked their heads open on the spot. And this was in the good ol' USA, with plenty of bathrooms and no tradition of urinating in public!
17. If you DON"T remember the Shoah, NEXT one will remember you!
Diamond ,   Chicago   (02.01.07)
A 'tragedy'? You mean like a bus accident, or a child drowning? THOSE are tragedies. The Holocaust is more than a 'tragedy'. But it's ok, every generation has to learn for itself. Why do you think Ahmedinajad is a rising star? To remind people like you who want to so badly forget. But the modern day Amalekites won't let you. The Nazis killed 6 million. These Jihadists, with modern day technology, will kill 16 million if given the chance. But you keep staying in denial. It's not about 'whining' it's about never forgetting our destroyed family.
18. Once a Nazi always a Nazi - the answer - ALIYAH!!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (02.01.07)
Those who say that urinating in public places in Europe is common place might have a point but Germany is supposed to be so clean and "civilized" that I would be surprised if this was common practice there. People do pee all over the place but there is something disgusting about a German peeing on the memorial to the 6,000,000 Jews murdered by the Nazis in the capital city of what was once the Nazi Reich!
19. The concept was all wrong
Tracy W   (02.01.07)
It would have made more sense to have a memorial that actually educates future generations. Europeans know that outdoor Jewish sites, such as graveyards, are routinely desecrated. And Europeans know about their own habit of urinating in places not designed for that. But they still went ahead with this poorly thought out concept. The idea of keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive is sound, considering the active campaign of denial taking place these days. But the Berlin monument, as it was designed, neither informs nor proves anything.
20. Israelis also pee everywhere
Da ,   Norway   (02.02.07)
I have always been amazed to drive in Israel, just to see cars pulle over and a guy geu out peeing just by the road in clear view of ther drivers...The Germans peeing on the monument is of course discusting and obscene...but I think it's a combination of drunk people and blatant disrespect of any monument...many people in Europe...also piss on churches etc...
