There can never be coexistence between Muslims and a liberal westren, democratic Europe. To think that is possible is to ignore the culture of Islam and the history of Islam. What will happen in Britain and in the rest of Europe is that after a number of terrorist incidents, the great majority of Europe's population will come down hard on its Muslim immigrants and there will be mass deportations, mass incarcerations and worse, until Europe will once again have a managible and small Muslim immigrant population that poses no threat to the rest of the population.

The Islamic extremists that call for an end to liberal democratic values are the same ones that use liberal democratic freedoms and liberty to disperse their ideology of hate. This is hypocrisy at its best, but who cares about hypocrisy when your goal is to eliminate anyone and everyone that doesn't acquiesce to your twisted world view. Micha, I agree wholeheartedly with you! It is enfuriating that there are so-called Muslim clerics presenting such a distorted image of Islam. You are right to say that they are addressing the young, the most impressionable, and it's scary. In my own small way I do my best to clarify these images whenever I am able to, but you are right; not enough people are speaking up. I wish I had the power to do more, but at this point I am not sure how to proceed. I want to share something I learnt a while ago. I was an English highschool teacher several years ago in Lebanon before moving to a western university. We usually used western and local textbooks in our classes. When I first began teaching in school, in several of the text books was a long excerpt from Anne Frank's diary. And even though it was a secular school, we were requested by the administration to tear out these pages, lest the parents of some of the students would think that in reading about the Holocaust their children would be affected by the Jewish tragedy and be sympathetic. I didn't think much of the issue then, although I was vaguely disturbed because I always had open and free discussions with my students in the class. But a few days ago when I read an article here which extended Frank's story, I knew that the only solution lay in education. If we don't educate our children, how will they grow up knowing any better? If we don't teach them history properly, religion properly, how will they grow to love each other. I am sometimes met by hostility if I offer to explain anything about Islam to some people here, and it is really frustrating. But when the Holy Koraan writes this: He hath revealed unto thee (Muhammad) the Scripture with truth, confirming that which was (revealed) before it, even as He revealed the torah and the Gospel. And I think that both the source of the article and its statistics are dubious and not to be taken altogether that seriously. I am not denying that there is a growing fundamentalism; in fact Im strongly against it. I was considering ways to help resolve this issue. Number 13 You are right about my being somewhat helpless regarding the incident I wrote of; but that incident took place in my first year of teaching. Later in my career as a coordinator I got more freedom and power to make changes in the curriculum, and by that time instead of using just a single book to teach from, I was able to give a lot of handouts to my students from different sources, encouraging debate and discussion in class. The reasons the incident happened back then were more political. In Lebanon, the majority of schools are secular, and religious education doesn't play a role. Some top schools even strictly forbid all teachers to even discuss or allow any discussion of religious or political issues, to avoid conflicts in classes where you have children from so many different backgrounds. My hope lies in encouraging that sort of debate, although Im thinking given the current political tension it may be even harder now. But it's a battle and Im willing to fight it, seeing as there are plenty who think the way I do. I understand that there are also similar issues that arise in Israeli schools.

However my question remains: how do we deal with other Muslim countries, the extremist ones and those that are not considered as such, but that still impose an extremist indoctrination in schools (such as Jordan). No need to go into details. So no matter how well intentioned the teacher, it would be very risky for her to bring any balance to the curriculum or any truth to the discussion except for the ones sanctioned by the authorities. Well, It's the first time I read this comment which I made for myself. You should elaborate! I was borne and lived in France for decades. Hundreds and books, articles were published by all sorts of Jew haters about «Jewish domination of French culture».
