the goal of the war was not literally to get back the two soldiers. who goes to war to save 2 people? the goal of the war was to teach hizbullah a lesson - that Israel won't sit back and take it when hizbullah kidnaps its soldiers. Israel managed to destroy a large portion of hizbullah's stockpiled weapons, bombed tunnels and infrastructure, and killed hizubllah leaders. They exposed the extent of hizbullah armament in south lebanon, and collected intelligence on the groups activities. I would say they accomplished their goals pretty well. Yes, some Israeli civilians and soldiers did die during the war. but how does that in any way mean that israel lost? In what war in the history of the world did the victorious side suffer zero casualties?

Syria. The Syrians achieved everything they wanted in this war. First they were able to weaken the current anti-Syrian government of Lebanon by making it appear ineffectual in protecting Lebanese sovereignty. Second their puppets Hezbollah gained political clout within Lebanon which allowed the Syrians to strengthen the vice-like grip over the people of Lebanon. Third and finally they were able to wage a war on Israel without taking any casualties or suffering attack. In my humble opinion Israel and the legitimate government of Lebanon should work to resolve the Shaaba Farms dispute. If this dispute is resolved and the legitimate Lebanese Army is strengthened Hezbollah can be disarmed and relegated to Southern Lebanese regional party, which will soon die or be relegated to political obscurity due to its failure to garner support outside of conservative shi'a communities.
