Allthough I hate the idea of Israel giving up soverignty of such an important site to jews I think that the best long term solution to Temple Mount issue is to create an international organistion make the site some kind of international holy site which neither Israel or the arabs have soverigy over. Right now the Israeli government reguarly forbids jews from the site if they think its going to upset the arabs if they go there, they allow archeology to be destroyed and illigal constuction because they are afraid of a confroontation and they wont allow jews to build synagougues but let the muslims build anything they want. If an international organistion were created that had real power, was no biased towards either side and it had the capability to enforce those powers then it would create a solution. If the muslims build illigaly then they pull it down, if jews want a synagogue the organistion would give the matter just as much discusion and have just as much of a chance of being built as a minorate would. It would also take the Temple Mount issue off the tale with the palestians because Israel cant give it to them so overnight we have solved one of the main roadmap final status issues and the site wont be closed to jews everytime the Israeli government gets nervous. The fact Olmert is so unpopular makes him the ideal man to do the job it woundt relaly matter if there were more Israelis who disliked him because of this decision the man is finished anyway. As I understand it, Mohammed ascending into heaven at the same spot where Jesus ascended into heave which is believed to be from the Dome of the Rock. There is an opening through which a person is permitted to touch the actual rock of the mountain. Aledgedly, that spot represents some footprint of acension. I do not recall whose footprint it is supposed to be, but I do know that Mohammed and Jesus are supposed to have ascended from that sight. I suspect it is an ancient tradition dating from the time of Jesus, or even earlier, which was adopted to reference Mohammed's dream. New religons frequently acquire traditions of earlier ones (in an effort to supplant). Of course, it could be true and both ascended from there. Plus the more ancient traditions, about Moses, Abraham, also may be true. Nevertheless, it is the dome of the rock that was central (at least in ancient Palestinian mythology); the mosque was built later. Otherwise, the mosque would have been built first.

Once, I heard an old man say that although Mecca was the holiest site in Islam, Allah lives in Jerusalem. Jerusalem is the hoiest site in the Palestinian view of reality, simply because the dear Lord actually resides in Jerusalem. He appears as an old man and you may bump into him in the market. I have been working for years in Makka and have been to Medina several times. Non-muslims are allowed in areas just few Kilometers from the down town; off the center. Non-muslims, working or visiting, are freely allowed to practice their religion as in any country. The Muslim-only area is very crowded with Muslim Pilgrims and the mosque is full of worshiper on the hour day and night. Imagine millions of Muslims in the Grand Mosque five times a day. Four million or more People making pilgrimage to mekka in only few days every year. Other more millions of people go to Makka all over the year. Why you haven't tried to build a synagogue in the Vatican; it's not too busy and much closer!
