1. Not every Haredi is Ashkenazi
(02.05.07)
Not every observant Jew wears fur on their heads, not every Jew speaks yiddish. Not every Jew wears black cloat. Mizrahi Chai
2. Nice intentions, but the Jewish language today is HEBREW
Efi ,   TA   (02.05.07)
In case they hadn't heard... Better late than never. Shalom!
3. Its a start...how about you learn IVRIT? More practical...
(02.05.07)
4. Hebrew is more practical
Paul ,   Austin, USA   (02.05.07)
It's important that Yiddish be preserved, but I think the intentions got lost here. Shouldn't Ashkenazim take it upon themselves to learn it in order to preserve it so that the language is kept in context? Hebrew should be promoted worldwide, though...but again, starting with Jews. I feel embarassed for Jewish kids who can't understand goyim that speak Hebrew to them.
5. YIDDISH = GHETTO LANGUAGE - DONT TEACH IT
andrew ,   Miami,USA   (02.05.07)
YIDISH IS TO GERMAN = WHAT JIVE IS TO ENGLISH JEWISH PEOPLE WENT BACK TO THEIR ORGINAL LANGUAGE HEBREW WHEN ISRAEL WAS REBORN
6. Narshkayt: YIDDISH = GHETTO LANGUAGE ...
Arieh Lebowitz ,   New York, USA   (02.06.07)
Andrew: Don't be a silly fellow. So what that the Jewish people's `original' language was Hebrew? That doesn't mean you should spit on 1,000 years of Yiddish, and some 200 plus years of Yiddish creativity. Just go to www.abebooks.com and type in either `Yiddish' or `TYiddishland' and you'll find a number of books that will if nothing else open your eyes. Jive? Gevalt!
7. #6 It represnts a mindset that allowed stockholm syndrom
(02.06.07)
We see this today, its called GALUT MENTALITY. Many Jews are still in a shetl, not caring what happens around them. You can still be very religious and take part in the creation or even protest of the state. Instead, nothing takes place, nothing is done. Wake up and understand what is going on. Stop waiting and start doing.
8. If Yiddish is ghetto language
Kevin Green ,   Oregon   (02.06.07)
and the culture of galut, what explains that Hebrew speaking Jews, born and raised in Israel, are so passively accepting the repeated violation of human rights by their own government? Nobody is prrotesting. Nobody is raising his voice. Is that the New Jew?
9. Yididsh
gershn ,   oakland USA   (02.06.07)
Its really tragic that some Jews should still have such negative attitudes towards the language that The majority of Jews spoke for hundreds if not a thousand years .Yiddish will survive not only Hitle rand Stalin, but those of our own people blinded by an outdated (and in my opinion never correct) aspect of Zionist Ideology. i
10. So lacking in humour
soorele ,   da haym   (02.06.07)
constipated Y talkbacks. An inferiority complex is a sad state of affairs. I'm helping my semi-sfardi grand children with their English, and I throw in a yiddish word or phrase every now and again. They love it and their sfardi parents too. I throw in French too, so calm down, grand pere. Stop moaning and whining. Gutt voch, zei mir gezint and a good SHABBES, especially to the sfardm who go bananas every time they see good sha sha shabbos. Lighten up and chill out.
11. #10 Isnt it really Gut Shabbos not Good Shabbos?

15. Correction no. 9
tma   (02.07.07)
Yiddish was never spoken by the majority of Jews. Ashkenazim never were the majority of Jews. You're forgetting all the Sefaradim , yemenites and Jews from Arab countries.
16. Yiddish
Gerry Tenney ,   Oakland ca   (02.16.07)
http://www.orthohelp.com/geneal/popul.HTM#regions Check this out for the poplation figures. my point is still the same. The denigration of the Yiddish language is turning a blind eye to history at best.
