40. Olmert is flying "high"
Natan ,   USA   (02.22.07)
I can't help but to conclude that this government is on drugs!!! Sounds to me that Olmert wants a Palestinian state more than the Palestinians themselves!!!
41. #5 David of Judea - Disagree
Judy Y ,   Los Angeles   (02.22.07)
We need to read more and more about the nonsense coming out of this government and the people ruining Israel. Why? Because there are still some naive souls who trust Olmert and Co. to make the right decisions for them. Those trusting souls need to be reminded repeatedly about the IQ , the degree of honesty and the real intentions of those in charge. Those sleepwalking toward disaster need to be shaken awake, or at least they need to be frequently reminded of the grim reality.
42. Should not be talking about this
Brod ,   USA   (02.22.07)
Israel should not be talking about a Palestinian state. It should be the vast Arab countries that should be giving the Palestinians a state and not tiny Israel.
43. #40 Natan - You're so right!!!
Judy Y ,   Los Angeles   (02.22.07)
Exactly. We don't hear the Palestinians demanding a country as much as Olmert and Rice falling all over themselves to accommodate them. It makes you wonder....
44. I see the Palestine State side by side with Israel JORDAN
e.m ,   s.f   (02.22.07)
Who care what Olmert see it is up to majority of Israeli beside Olmert will be forget in Israel history the only thing Jews will remember from him the destruction of Amona settlement
45. His vision and Hamas' is the same
Ilan ,   Ariel   (02.22.07)
Olmert should remember that he is the Prime Minister of the State of Israel and not Israel's representative for Hamas. We need a leader with a vision of building our State, not replacing it with another.
46. a piece of advice
Michael   (02.22.07)
why doesn't olmert work on issues of the state of Israel. If you can't maintain the internal workings of your own government. How in the world , do you think you can succeed in building another state?! Look out David Letterman PM Olmert is turning out to be almost as funny as you.
47. IF HE GIVES LAND....... HE WLL BE LIKE SHARON
ITS 'GD' OF ISRAELS ,   LAND, NOT OLMERTS   (02.22.07)
48. a question for Olmerts many critics
Peter ,   Toronto canada   (02.23.07)
While I am not so naive as to believe all this, and while I am a strong supporter of Israel and its remaining a Jewish state forever, I get the feeling that many here would never accept a Palestinian state. so I ask and welcome educated responses to this question. What is it you would need to see from the Palestinians in order to enter into negotiations for Palestinian statehood. And what would you be willing to sacrifice for such an agreement? I am curious to see who has a partner in whom here.

I don't claim to speak for Israelis, but it seems to me that anybody should be very weary of making any kind of deal with a "partner" who swears he wants to banish you from "their" land. That's been the problem since 1948, and even way before that: war and terrorism aimed at destroying the Jewish presence in Israel. Israelis have not been against peace with the Palestinians. They have been ready to settle for peace several times. It's the Arabs who have rejected their offers and reacted with intifadas and threats of annihilation. Remember Ehud Barak's offer? It agreed to give them everything except the right of return. Everything, including E. Jerusalem. These days the Palestinians still don't want to recognize the right of Israel to exist. This is no small matter. It implies their right to take it over and destroy it. It's that simple. So your estimation that "many here would never accept a Palestinian state" is not the issue. The issue is that Palestinians don't want to accept a Jewish state. One last point: who speaks for the Palestinians? Who do you make a deal with? Who in Palestine is going to respect a signed piece of paper the day after it becomes a country? There has to be political maturity on their part, a minimum of stability, and respect for human rights, democratic rights and international law.
