1. Gur Hassidim serve in the IDF
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (02.28.07)
The Rebbes of Gur always encouraged their Hassidim to serve in the IDF and not avoid service. For many years they were the only Haredi soldiers. Other Haredi soldiers include Chabad and Breslov.

And Klausenberg Sanz. Many army uniforms seen in the shchuna, with lots doing miluim..Big army exercise took place there two weeks ago, at the invitation of the Rabbi to Pikud Ha'oref. The Rabbis father ZLblessed our boys before they went into the army,.Mutual respect still works for us till today.
4. There is a Gur tzarchania
Ruth ,   Gush Dan   (02.28.07)
in our neighbourhood. What a mixed bag of customers, it's interesting and heartwarming to see. As everyone is respectful, it just doesn't make juicy hate filled headlines. We dont burn clothes or store fronts, how boring we are.

7. My family is Gur and I grew up living it...
Robert ,   Hilton Head, SC USA   (02.28.07)
From personal experiences I can tell you that Gur is all that and more. While I am not Gur (or orthodox) anymore, I recall my childhood and teenage years (Bucherish yahrin) with a smile. Most of the followers are committed family people with their priotities set straight. The Admor (as well as those before him) encourage those that are not the 'learning Torah 24/7' type to go out an make an honest living. The women are not discourged from working either. They do their army service once they are married and are well thought of in their respective military divisions. I very much enjoyed the experiences and still have close friends from my Gerrer years. Mostly they have treated me well and continue to invite me to their Shabbat and Chagim dinners when i visit Israel. The last time I was there they actually shlepped me (in Armani jeans and Silk shirt) to go into the Admor and give a kvittel (paper prayer request). It was a great experience, especially when he quizzed me about the time I learned in Gur in the early 80's while his father was the Admur. He also gave me a great bottle of wine, which I still have. Thier wedding rules are strictly adhered to and probraly saves lots of followers alot of aggravation etc. Kudos to Gur. The way Chassidus was meant to be. FYI... They allow their women to dress really nice. None of that shaved heads, black head scarve, Burka stuff from Iran or Meah She'arim.

Sounds OK to me...:-))))
9. Surprised at lack of hostility in story, talkback comments
Lee ,   New York   (03.01.07)
I am pleasantly surprised by the lack of sarcasm and hostility in this YNet story. Most stories about charedim seem to be filled with venom. Let's hope this is the beginning of a new trend, toward true 'multiculturalism' and 'tolerance' amongst Jews of all stripes. We have enough enemies who hate any Jew no matter what size, shape, denomination, or origin. Let's begin to appreciate what some chareidim have to offer--in this case, a model of decency and good taste and common sense.

their own decisions?

unless you try to find fault with every thing written about chasidim you would not have questioned #7 it is in the same equasion as any secular couple choice of their dress style. all that was said by # 7, is that they do not place any special restrictions or demands upon their woman try and stop being so negitive about other choices
13. Ah Rachel you missed the point COMPLETELY
Ruth   (03.01.07)
That's how clever these wives are, and probably have great marriages because of their wisdom. You probably still don't understand what I'm saying though, and that's the sad part...

Why criticise ? If you are a "mensch" you will be treated alike . I didn't even know they are serving in IDF , that's only positive . They are tolerant ? that certainly positive . They are religious and believing ? Let them live as they want , this does not disturb anybody , even a secular as i am . Lee , this is not a new trend . When people act positively , there can't be negative reactions of "sane" people . Antisemites , anti Jews , can always find something to criticise , but those are not the "sane" people .
16. Al and Lee are surprised.
Yaqir   (03.05.07)
The Gerrer are minding their business of serving G-d and not promoting any crazy messianic agenda. The lovable Chassids of Shivchei Habesht and Buber, are them, not the Lubis.
