1. Olmert, for once you stood up for the correct reason :)
ben ,   singapore   (03.11.07)
2. She was always anti religious.
Ely Greenhut ,   Tzfat Israel   (03.11.07)
3. Privatisation Of Schools A Great Idea.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (03.11.07)
Similar to a voucher system, forcing schools to compete or lose students. An excellent idea. With the proper gov't. supervision (not Ms Tamir) this would be a way to start improving our rather deficient educational system. A uniform curriculum for ALL Israeli students including Haredim could be established by experts (again, not Ms Tamir) .
4. About Tamir's statement
Keren ,   SP-now in Israel   (03.11.07)
"The law would cause privatization of education and therefore sets a precedent to fund private religious education, including Islamic education" it is very simple to be resolved:Just don't let it happen ! Israel can not afford letting islamists(and others against the Jewish State)to do what ever they want in Israel, for later have to stop their incitement against the state. It doesn't make sense!Just don't let it happen in its begginings and then they will not strive. And by the way:what is about the psichotic message is Israel giving to arabs by having the arabic language written in all streets signs and even in the Israeli currency? If by this means Israel is trying to transmit them they are very wellcomed in the Jewish State, then the signs in the streets and the currency should be written in Russian ,French,English,Romanian,Portuguese, etc,as well. Doesn't those who have been running this country understand the power of the language they are aplying? Anyone who understands a nothing about the subliminal effect of this language, already understands what it provoques and what it means. Signs in Israel should be written only in Hebrew:the language of the Jewish People, in the Jewish state. Any other way of writting them is not normal at all! And,if ,by its begginings ,Israel commited the mistake of gently including the arab language as one of its official languages, please ,change it quicly!
5. Funding Haredi Private school education
roxy ,   israel   (03.11.07)
Why should they receive funding for private schooling while the secular students must either go to public schools or pay for private school education? THe state must treat all students the same and if they are willing to fund private education for one sector of the population then they must fund it for all!
6. Supporting centuries of Jewish education, culture, tradition
Yacov ,   Ashkelon   (03.11.07)
Haredi schools are reviving, preserving, protecting and otherwise restoring Jewish education, culture and traditions that Hitler nearly succeeded in destroying. As the only Jewish nation in the world, Israel has the obligation and full responsibility for helping the haredi schools in their attempts to recover and rebuild on the surviving remnants of our Jewish ancestry. We need to help the haredi help us to survive as Jews once again surrounded by a hostile world.
7. Ha!
Vitaliy ,   Brooklyn, NY   (03.11.07)
Well, at least we know someone has something resembling a brain in Israeli government. Is the government really not understanding what Tamir said? They do realize that all that it takes now is one single lawsuit to be filed in the Bagatz and they will have to fund the Islamic movement schools... She is right, you know?
8. Good!
Avraham ,   Netivot   (03.11.07)
It's about time.
9. Support Arab schools too!
Ralph Haglund ,   Lund, Sweden   (03.11.07)
Support also means full Governmental control over what is taught - so what is wrong? make the Arab kids good ambassadors for Israel!
10. No
charles ,   petach tikva   (03.11.07)
Private schools have to be founded privately . If they want money they have to follow the rules , the state education program , not their own uncontrolled one . We have enough iran visitors , we don't need more , at our expenses . If you give money to them , also to all the private schools , no matter what their origins are , or how they want to educate their pupils .
11. RIGHT YOU ARE CHARLES. #-10.
RCA ,   USA   (03.12.07)
Demand will create the private institutions from where the demand originates. That is the free market and not the business of government. What government money pays for, government money controls. That means more power to the Chief Rabbinate and its cronies over the lives of Jews who see their Judaism differently. It also means Haredi support for the entrenched ministers in office who are oppressing other Judaic movements. It means that the MKs keep the Rabbis in power and vice versa. Private schools mean private support. That is the HONEST WAY !!!
12. JEWISH MOVEMENTS HAVE BEEN IGNORED !!
RCA ,   USA   (03.12.07)
NO STATE SUPPORT FOR HAREDI SCHOOLS. It's time to end this nonsense. The HAREDI are crying descrimination against themselves, when they are the ones who have been descriminating against other Jews all along. It's the ultimate hypocracy. The practice is a world embarrasment to Jews for having gone on so long. The leaders who are bringing this about against the democratic wishes of the majority should be banished for creating such divisions, discontent and injustice in Israel. Olmert should be run out of town on a rail, for jumping on the bandwagon. Judaic movements should be totally self-supported, and the Chief Rabbinate should be abolished and removed from politics.

We see you are not a Jew at all, otherwise you would understand the necessity of my People to keep united, religious and not. Those who preach against one sector of our People and want them out, they are AGAINST the Jews and are looking for thieir own interests. And about conversions, just by the way, they can be wrongly accomplished by some reform( or something )Rabis, but only Hashem knows who is Jew and who is not. Men can do whatever they want but they will never be able to cheat G'od!

charles ,   petach tikva   (03.12.07)
What you say is that we should be united , i agree . But , there is a but , religious speak only of a united people when they need the secular's money . Otherwise seculars are not part of their people . I can add , i'm 100 % Jewish .

Actually, YOU, don't see that I am a Jew. And yes, Jews should be united...on many more levels than they are at present. Do you expect all Jews such as myself to just keep quiet in the face of the discrimination and injustice being perpetrated by one sector of Jewry upon others who they consider of inferior Judaic credential. Well, you are very mistaken if you do, my dear Keren. And, to say that you can see that I am not a Jew at all is just more of the same rubbish which makes my point. First, you can't see anything. You surmise. and wrongly so, from my talkback comment. If you have been familiar with any of my previous talkbacks on various subjects, you would already know where I stand as a Jew. From your point of view, Jews who criticize Jews, are no longer Jews. I DON'T THINK SO !! I AM PROUD TO BE A REFORM JEW ! I PROTEST THE WAY JEWS OF YOUR PERSUASION HAVE VIEWED AND ACTED AGAINST MY JUDAISM !!! DO YOU HEAR ME ??? So don't so self-rightiously declare, that I don't understand the necessity of MY PEOPLE to keep united, religious or not ! DON'T SPIT IN MY FACE AND THEN TRY TO CONVINCE ME THAT IT IS RAINING ! I WILL HAVE NONE OF IT ! ...Not even from another Jew ! Unfortunately, the only thing that we can agree on, and sadly so, is that ONLY HASHEM KNOWS WHO IS A JEW, AND WHO IS NOT. Snap out of it...and get over it. SHALOM !
