31. #23 The difference between people like Kyle and me and Nazis
Daniel ,   Formerly Israel   (03.16.07)
There is nothing wront with thinking your ideals are better than other peoples'. When we decide what values to adoopt we look around at the values of peoople around us, decide what set of values we think is best, and adopt them for ourselves. Hence it is logical that we think our values are better than the values of other people, otherwise we wouldn't have adopted them. The dfference between people like Kyle, Linda, Gabriella, myself (and you), and the Nazis is that we don't believe that having what we view as better values or better ideals than others gives us the right to impose them on others by force. What the Nazis wanted was to kill everyone who did not share their values. What we want is to secure our own values for ourselves, and if that means using force against those who would forcefully deprive us of our values (by killing us or forcefully converting us) than that is exactly what we are entitled to do.
32. Churchill..logical
Mikulas ,   Bratislava, Slovakia   (03.16.07)
Anyone critcizing even a small aspect of Israeli relationship with Palestinians is labeled an anti-semite. Why even Rabin (a real Jew hero) and Sharon were caricatured by crazy right-wing Jews as Nazis. I think the attack on Churchill is the latest wake up call for a big crowd of nutties here who see anti-semitism everywhere even when there is none.
33. Adam: Churchill did what he had to do to save Britain
Yacov ,   Ashkelon   (03.16.07)
Churchill did all he had to do to save Britain. Did he do all the things that could have been done to save Europe's Jews? NO. All of your diversions, rationalizations and excuses cannot change the facts of history about Churchill. He repeatedly denied Jewish requests to allow European Jews to escape to Britain or Palestine, bomb the concentration camps and railroads leading to them, and bomb Hitler and his government ministries.
34. #33
JB ,   Canada   (03.16.07)
Unfortunately Churchill like Roosevelt was heavily influenced by their Foreign Office (or State Dept.) and their military when it came to deciding on who got into the country or where to drop the bombs. Canada's Mackenzie-King as well but in addtion he cowtowed to Quebec which had trouble distinguishing between Jews and dogs (not unlike many modern day Muslims). The State Dept./Foreign Office was decidedly unsympathetic to Jews as were many in the Military. So please lay the blame appropriately. As ADAM has pointed out the real Jew Haters were the Labour Govt with Atlee, and Bevin. It was they who also financed and armed Glubb-Pasha and the Jordanian Legion while withhold arms to Israel and spewing out hypocrisy about being even-handed. Churchill's attitude changed somewhat after the assassination of Lord Moyne (a good friend of his) by Shamir's group, but I don't believe he ever lost support for the Zionist cause.
35. Timeline Illiteracy
Jerry Sussman ,   Alexandria USA   (03.17.07)
Either the letter was penned by Churchill or it was not. But one thing is reasonably clear: the letter was written in 1937, not 1939, 1940, nor anytime during the War. During the time the letter was written (i.e., before the War), Churchill had, on various occasions, publicly praised Hitler. The supposed predicate for the letter and for Churchill's supposed antisemitism that he "did what he had to for the Empire," etc., is a lot of rot. Someone referred to an American saying, "the good die young." Well, there's another one: the apple doesn't fall far from the tree." Anyone doubting Churchill's predilections need only listen to the pompous pro-Arab, perennially anti-Israeli comments made by his namesake offspring who continue to perpetuate the myth of the greatness of Churchill and his affinity toward Jews and toward Israel. When the Germans invaded the Channel Islands, English Jews went to Auschwitz no more protests by Churchill than than were made by the German-occupied leaders of Vischi France.
36. #32 Real Jew Hero?
Josh   (03.17.07)
Evry year in Israel a cult-like propaganda oriented campaign is launched for to proclaimed Yithak Rabin a hero and to demonize those who object to govenment (UN) policies. Fact is he was a politician. He was under police investigation, was involved in an embarrasing political step-down. The Jewish Rabbis pulled their support from him. He wanted peace with the Palestinians - like that will ever happen. Sharon gave us a pull-out - did that stop the Palestinians or bring peace. He pulled back in Lebanon - look at what that did for Israel. The assasination should not be grounds for being a hero. There are many Jews murdered to this day by the Palestinians and Beduins here in Israel. Worldwide a new nazi-like anti-semitism grows, a war on terorism, and massive losses of life by those who tout the Muslim/Palistinian cause. Would Izthak Rabin have fixed this? Is it so noble to embrace an emeny. Turn the other cheek - judge not lest yee be judged. Well that's not Jewish - its Christian. You shall be a nation of judges. Painting on a face of freindship when it is clear they seek you demise dispite you best effort - is ridiculous. Givin in to an enemy is even worse. Rabin was a politician - not a hero. He fought like many Isralis in wars - that is a duty shared by all Israleis. He made decisions for the benifit of the UN and US not necessarily for the Jews. We know how well the UN treats Israel. He worked with such Israei lovers as Jimmy Carter. He died at the hands of an impressionable person who did not believe in his politics and uprooting Jews in the territoiories - not because of some heroic action. Its a shame but as I said before, who thought they were heros when they were in office? Now Maccabi that is a hero - not a politicain hyped as one.
37. churchill
izaak   (03.17.07)
there is no question churchill admired jews but thought the jews expendable and british independance came first .maybe he didnt expect the mass killing in 1940 but could have risked more to save a few million jews . the jews suffered for all allied and soviet resistance .

When did Churchill praise Hitler?!??!?!?! Their animosity and dislike towards each other is notorious! Churchill made the odd veiled complement towards Stalin but that was out of convenience when the alliance was shakey....but Hitler. Please name one of these 'various occassions' or is it just hearsay bulls***t to try to prove a very weak arguement.............

Churchill was a Britsh Imperialist and the Empire was standing alone and fighting for its life. There was inherent anti-Semitism in the higher eschelons of power but Chuchill's support of a Jewish State was unwaivered.
40. Churchill
Bob Rose ,   Boonies In Texas   (03.17.07)
I'm an old Red Neck in The State of Texas.....I also am a history buff and Sir Winston is my hero for the last 100 years. If y'all want to get a little more educated on Sir Winston, try reading "Bodyguard of Lies" by Anthony Cave Brown. It is a hard read but I have read it a dozen times. Extremely interesting on what really happened in WWII.
41. Churchill hated the Jewish People
David ,   Montpelier USA   (03.18.07)
Churchill prevented the Nazis death camps from being bombed. He was steadfastly opposed to Israel's creation. He was a hater of the Jewish People. Current British behavior of sponsoring anti-Israel pro-terrorist Islam is in the Churchill tradition.
42. Winnie the Wonderman
Liam Hogan ,   London   (03.19.07)
A few facts please to educate some of the writers on here: 1) Over 50,00 German Jews were allowed into Britain before the outbreak of war in 1939. 2) Churchill wasn't even in the government until war was declared and he became Prime Minster in 1940. 2) Churchill wasn't in government at the time of post-war Jewish emigration to Palestine. He was an active and vocal supporter of Jewish emigration. 3) Britain had a Labour (Socialist) and largely anti-Zionist government 1945-1952 which spent millions of badly needed funds nationalising industry and maintaining military bases all over the world to prop up a collapsing Empire. The British Army in Palestine therefore did their bidding and not his. 3)The RAF and USAF bombed over 600 German cities along with railway lines, power plants, ports, dams and bridges in order to defeat the Nazi war effort. At least German 500,000 civilians were killed by these actions alone. 4) Although Churchill was a product of 19th Century British Imerialism and made - in hindsight - a number of outrageous comments towards Mussolini, the striking miners and Gandhi, he was an early proponent of social liberalism and campaigned or free trade, free education, old age pensions, and a minimum wage. 5) He accurately predicted the Nazi armaments build-up. He opposed Nazism, Hitler and the Chamberlain Government's 'peace' efforts. As result of this he became a political untouchable prior to the declaration of war. 6) For almost two years (1939-1941), Britain stood alone against the Nazi war machine. Churchill provided us with a political and military focus almost unparalled in our history. If only Israel had such a leader today (Bibi maybe?) 7) And yes, it would have been really smart to drop bombs on the death camps in Eastern Europe, assuming : a) we could have located them; b) we could have reached them in our tiny bombers after flying over 1200 miles (round trip) of enemy territory (we lost on average 20% of our airplanes after each trip) c) we would have killed thousands of dying prisoners and then caused the Nazis to use the remaining slave labour to build new and improved camps (as they did anyway). For all his other erroneous, military, political, social and imperialistic opinions, his statue gracing the square opposite Britain's Parliament is more than fitting, compared with most of the others which have their effigies on display throughout our Capital city. Shalom Israel.
43. Anti-Semite = Obsolete Term
bruce beal ,   la usa   (03.22.07)
If one is Anti-Jew/-ish, one still may not be anti-semite, as there are millions of semites, which are not jews/-ish. To use this broad a term to describe one's despite of Jews, is to inversly imply that jews are the only Semites in the world. Champions of Jews, of which I am one, need a better and accurate term other than anti-semite, so as not to appear and or feel racist. I am biased in favor of Israel, and against her enemies, some of whom may be Jews who disdain to support her claim to sovereignty. Anti-Semite does not work as descriptive of them. The attitude that Jews are semites and no one else, may be a part of whole problem.
44. Really?
