Israeli Arabs have their own leaders, schools, newspapers. They have a better standard of living and more rights than Muslims in Arab lands. Israeli Arabs tend to have large families with many of their financial needs subsidized by the Israeli government. They can get a university education, don't need to serve in the military and are free to succeed. Since many Israeli Arabs are college educated and have professional jobs, I wonder why good old Layla is cleaning toilets? Could it be she's not smart? Maybe she's too lazy to look for work or sits back like an ofendi waiting to be taken care of. Better yet, she doesn't live in Israel and only knows what she reads in the anti-Israel media.

First off, props to Edithann for seeing Lina's comments for what they are: further evidence of the racism and ignorance in Jewish Israeli society towards their Palestinian Arab counterparts. I don't clean toilets for a living. Having graduated magna cum laude from a MA program at a North American university, I have been more fortunate than other Palestinians living in Nazareth in terms of securing work, largely because my English skills are much better than those of most Israeli Jews. Funny though, no Jew has ever hired me for anything - Arabs are my only clientele. Friends of mine who were educated in Israel and whose Hebrew is much better than that of the many recent Jewish immigrants to Israel, still struggle to make a living. Many of them can't even get their foot in the door, particularly if they dare to express political opinions. Most avoid such discussions with potential Jewish employers like the plague and it's no wonder when we have to deal with people like Lina.
