31. Mormons also believe American Indians are Jews
Jake D. ,   Salt Lake City, UT   (04.18.07)
The Introduction to the Book of Mormon states that a Jews who migrated from Jerusalem are the "Principle Ancestors" of modern American Indians. In fact Mormons also belief we are litterally adopted into one of Israels 12 tribles. Thats one reason we commonly call non-mormons gentiles.

We keep lists offer baptisms to all in accordance with our doctrine. If anyone else wants to do the same....let them worship how, where, or what they may. That means if a muslim wants to make lists and offer anything they think is helpful, great. I don't care because I don't believe it. If a Jew wants to make a list of Mormons and burn it, stomp it under their feet, I still don't care. To me, it is just a list of names because I don't adhere to your religion. Let me worship how, where or what I may - it is not your place to tell me how I should adhere to my religion because - and I will not stop because you are offended. I could say I'm offended that a Jew doesn't accept Christ, but that would be ridiculous because you should worship how, where or what you desire. I have no say in it.
33. Two sides
Jared ,   Idaho Falls, ID   (04.18.07)
This entire thread is a good example of what life can be like as a Mormon. A recent poll interestingly revealed that although many americans were uncomfortable voting for a Mormon for president, those who ACTUALLY KNEW ONE, had a very good opinion of that person and/or their family. I think the lesson here is clear. Prejudice is easy to pass on, but only when you remain in ignorance. You've heard in this thread that Mormons are good people and their church a charitable and honest organization, and you've also heard that Mormons are power-hungry racists, conspiring for the presidency. I think the spite and hate in one side of those arguments should make their motive clear. However, discourse can be a healthy thing, IF YOU INVESTIGATE BOTH SIDES with an open mind. If you feel the need to read all the Mormon hating material out there, that is your right. But integrity demands that you also open your mind to the fact that Mormons may not be what their critics paint them to be. Haven't you heard these same sort of arguments against people like Martin Luther King, the founding fathers, and even Jesus Christ? Go meet a Mormon family. Listen to a short message from the Mormon missionaries. Maybe attend a service. Then come back here and tell me what terrible people they are. Very few who actually know Mormons have an easy time hating them, and if they do, they usually have a previous ax to grind. When you hate ANY group of people, you owe them the courtesy of getting to know them a little bit first. Just a thought.
34. Mormon president good for US Jews?
Dave ,   Richmond, VA USA   (04.19.07)
Cliff # 30 It's ironic that you reference "The Godmakers," a work that B'nai B'rith's Anti-Defamation League denounced as 'defamatory,' 'scurrilous,' and 'a threat to religious freedom.' Mormons seek only the best of relations with Jews. Jews remain God's Covenant People in Mormon theology, and as the only religious group to have a government extermination order issued against them, Mormons empathize with Jewish persecution. Baptism for the dead has been a difficult issue, but is an issue mainly because Mormons and Jews misunderstand each other's position. I fully agree with the official Mormon policy that Holocaust victims are off limits, and it is regrettable that some - in ignorance or disobedience - have continued the practice anyway. We should not let it get in the way of what has been a very strong and close relationship.
35. Mixing religion with government
Bob Ritter ,   Falls Church, VA   (04.21.07)
I don't care that Mitt Romney is a Mormon. But I do care about politicians carrying their religion with them to the positions for which they are elected. I agree with Rabbi Brackman that it is undeniable that religion and other beliefs have a major effect on the way we view life and the decisions we make. I also share his view that it is impossible to compartmentalize religious (or non-religious) views from our view with what is best for the nation. And that is why I find impossible to support Romney and most politicians. With so many politicians trying to out God Bless America their opponents, most are unfit to serve public office. I would put Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in this category as well. Bob Ritter Founder, Jefferson Madison Center for Religious Liberty
36. Mormon tolerance
manaen ,   southern California   (04.29.07)
I'm a believing Mormon. Regarding Romney's tolerance of Jewish beliefs and worship, I suggest looking at his own record: he's been in public office and held high-profile private responsibilties -- did he do anything objectionable? Regarding my Church's tolerance of other religious belief's and practices, a Catholic friend of mine was convinced when we visited Utah. As you may know, mob persecution drove the Mormons out of the U.S. in the mid-nineteenth century to create their own community centered in what now is Utah. Proestant ministers encouraged intolerance towards us and some were among the leaders of the mob that killed our prophet, Joseph Smith. My friend was convinced of our tolerance by all the places of worship for other religions in Salt Lake City that were built in the 1800s, while we still were subjects of active persecution by members of these groups in other parts of the world. I thank our Jewish friends for speaking against the intolerance against us.

OY   (05.02.07)
Romney is no good. He has done major flip flop on all the big issues. Plust, googel romney and henry ford and then say he is good for jews? please. Another pandering republican politician. nothing special here except a hairdo.
39. mormonism is a cult
p Hall ,   enterprise, al   (05.09.07)
First of all, mormonism is NOT even considered a religion but rather a cult. Although, most consider the latter day saints the same as mormons-most mormons deny it. I would NEVER vote for Romney. I am a Republican and I would vote for Hilary before I would vote for a Mormon.
40. Religion
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (07.23.07)
There are good people in every religion, of every color and some, who don't subcribe to any religion, at all. Considering the checks and balances built into the way our government functions, I don't care about the religion of a president. I just want a decent person as president, who puts our interests first and who won't behave in ways that make us the laughing stock of the world. Mitt Romney seems to have been a very able governor in a predominantly Catholic State, and that says a lot for the man.
