and USA must get a gun ban. Its insane.
3. Shooting at Virgina Tech
roxy ,   israel   (04.17.07)
My condolences to all the victims& their families. How was the shooter able to get on campus, isn't there any guard at the enterence to the campus ? Why weren't the students notified earlier about the 1st shooting those on campus by phone since they have no pa system, how hard would it have been to call the dorm staff and have them tell their students on the floors what was happening, perhaps if this had been done then the results would have not been so tragic.

6. warning
Jack ,   Blacksburg, VA   (04.17.07)
It is too big a campus for them to search everyone or have any form of checkpoint style entrances. There are 25,000 full-time students, and over a hundred buildings. The screw up was in not sending the e-mail notices, and cell phone IMs, out once they did not have the shooter in custody. The first e-mails were sent after the second instance begun. Some people in authority were told to lock down certain buildings, related to the first instance, but there was a failure to warn the wider community. Otherwise, it is a really big campus--really big--with very large multi-story buildings. They should have sent the e-mails earlier, and put more detail in the ones they sent. Perhaps they should send out IM to phones instead of solely using the email route.
7. G-d bless the NRA!
JPS ,   Efrat   (04.17.07)
Thank goodness Americans have the National Rifle Association to stand up for their rights to bear arms, especially those psychos who have bad days and happen to violate the rights of other Americans by killing them. This is a very proud day for Wayne LaPierre and Charlton Heston, who must be happy that ordinary citizens had the right to own AK-47s to protect themselves in situations like this. No doubt Heston and LaPierre will say that it's simply too bad that the students and professors weren't all armed with sideamrs and semi-automatic assault rifles.
8. May all the victims of this sensless crime rest in peace

9. Usually
Ben ,   Denver   (04.17.07)
I usually say this jokingly, but this time the irony is indeed overwhelming: a Holocaust survivor killed during Yom HaShoah. May his memory be for a blessing. Amen.
10. From the WTC to Virginia is Just a Short Hop
Dave Levy ,   Burbank. USA   (04.17.07)
When Kennedy was shot in Los Angeles, I told a friend, the description of the murderer appears to be an Arab (he was called "Swarthy"), The motivation was Kennedy's support for Israel. Now we learn that an Israeli professor was killed in this Virginia massacre by an "Asian". Of all the professors, I ask, why this particular one? Is it a stretch to say that Jihad has gone from the WTC (thought to have thousands of Jewish workers), to the Virginia campus? But knowing the Muslim fanatics and propagandists, they will link America's support of Israel to the massacre. I wonder whether this University has more links to Jews and Israel? Just today, the Syrian info minister threatened Israel will violence., while Iran also has threatened violence to any country supporting the UNSC sanctions. Is there a nexus? Only time will tell.

14. Right to bear arms
(04.17.07)
Well, it may have turned out differently if the students and professors on campus were allowed to bear arms by the university. At least it's possible someone would've killed the shooter before he killed 32 others. This is why there's a mitzvah to kill the pursuer, not stand by the blood of your fellow human being. Lots of people just standing by doing nothing today while 32 innocent people were killed. Sad sad day.
15. #3 It is a big campus
AK   (04.17.07)
I remember when only israels screened passengers, while we just bought our tickets and got on our planes; I remember when there were no metal detectors and in any public building; I remember when it wouldn't occur to anybody to even ask why wasn't there a guard posted at the entrance to the lecture hall. We all ignored evil being done to the Israelis at our own peril. And to all those who are tempted to criticize American 'gun culture,' the perpetrator/perpetrators were Asians, perhaps Chinese, perhaps recent arrivals on the student visas, that is if we can trust the current reports.
16. # 8
Baffled ,   Israel   (04.17.07)
Amen!! I am still at a loss to understand how the authorities of the college handled this issue - even after reading #7's explanation. The gap of two hours between shooting incidents is a little hard to understand - the whole campus could and should have been put on alert during that time - surely an efficient police force could have found the shooter ....
17. 14 you must be kidding
j brown ,   melbourne australia   (04.17.07)
yes, thats the way! prevent guns from killing people by encouraging more guns! the right to bear arms is the reason why the USA is one of the most violent countries in the world. you say - the students and professors should have had guns to defend themselves. This way, the killer wouldn't have been able to fire off so many rounds. i say - nobody should have access to guns that way the killer would not have fired off any shots at all
18. JPS
Barak ,   Portland, Oregon   (04.17.07)
This is a typical anti-gun knee jerk reaction. The State of Virginia has some of the most strict gun laws in the US. The shooter, reportedly a Chineese national was here on a student Visa. The guns he used were certainly obtained illegally. All the gun laws would not have kept him from getting weapons. You couldn't be more wrong. In fact, the opposite of what you say is true. If Virginia had fewer Gun laws then maybe one of the students or professors may have had a weapon of their own adn could have shot this maniac!
19. #16 The police wrongly assumed it to be a 'domestic' crime
AK   (04.17.07)
a jilted boyfriend shooting his girlfriend, period. We still don't know who and why committed this horrific crime.
20. 18. oh for god sake
j brown ,   melbourne australia   (04.17.07)
yes you can get guns illegally. but if guns were generally banned in the usa, it would be very very hard for this dude to acquire some... have some faith in your customs and border protection. lax gun laws are the reason why your country has one of the highest rates of gun violence in the world. while australia's is one of the lowest....especially following the port arthur massacre when we banned all automatic weapons
21. How tragic and ironic - on Yom Hashoah
(04.17.07)
22. # 10
john ,   jerusalem   (04.17.07)
your racist imagination is dragging beyond logicallreality. why in the hell you link such a murder that often happen in the USA to middle east conflict. I am sure that between the victims are americans of different backgrounds and not only the israeli lecturer was the victim. so better shut up you racist bigot.
23. Barukh Dayan Emet
Noam ,   Boca Raton, FL   (04.17.07)
It is especially terrifying to hear that this esteemed Tikkun Olam driven professor was among those murdered in cold blood by an evil ruthless killer. Professor Librescu was a great man and should be remembered as such by Israel, the US, and the world at large. May God comfort his family as they mourn his loss and seek justice for all the victims of this truly Amalekite massacre.
24. purify usa, these things dont happen elsewhere
noona ,   israel   (04.17.07)
i agree. the incident is really shocking!
25. To #2 and #17 The Right To Bear Arms
David ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (04.17.07)
This was an isolated incident and can not be used to argue against the 'right to bear arms'. The right to bear arms gives the United States citizens a means to protect themsleves. It is a common law of self-defense. This means that if you have a family household and a criminal breaks into your house and rapes and kills your grandma in her downstairs bedroom and then goes upstairs after the sleeping children, then you go get your gun and blow him away. It is YOUR RIGHT to do so. I would also add that it is YOUR MORAL OBLIGATION This guy who did the shooting would have gotten a gun (black market or something) and done what he planned on doing even if it was illegal for all citizens to carry a firearm. The right to bear arms is there to protect people. I wish there were just one Cowboy in the classroom that day who brought his gun to school. That way, the shooter would have had some bullets flying back at him too.
26. talk of gun control
Yisraeli   (04.17.07)
Whilst america may have a problem with to many guns on the street its utter stupidity to say if only america had more gun control this wouldnt happen. The baddies will always be able to get weapons no matter how much you legislate against it. But you will prevent a person of being able to defend themselves their families or others. Why do you think in Israel there are many teachers issued by the schools with small .22 Barettas for fun? Try introducing gun control in Israel and see how many citizens will simply die by terrorists who have no problems getting arms. People have a right to defend themselves especially if they are law abiding citizens. and Im no gun toting american.
27. May we have details of the beautiful photo
Naomi ,   Israel   (04.17.07)
of Prof.Librescu Z'L in his tallit? What is the background? The occasion? It's a hauntingly beautiful picture, and worth more than (or at least as much as) 'a thousand words"' . May this dear brave Israeli gentleman rest in peace, and his grieving family comforted among the mourners of Zion. His memory is a beacon of light shining amidst an unfathomably sick tragedy.
28. Detail of the photo. From Hebrew ynet

29. #24 - actually, they do.
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (04.17.07)
I remember spree killings in England and Australia in recent years, and come to think of it, one in Israel, too. But nowhere do they happen as frequently as the USA. By the way, just what do you mean by "purify?"
30. Barak #18 and American gun sickness
JPS ,   Efrat   (04.17.07)
Barak - the problem you Yanks have is that thanks to the NRA gun lobby just about anybody with a pulse can get a gun, be it six-shooter or military assault rifle. And contrary to what you said, gun laws do prevent whackos from getting weapons. 33 dead in one attack is nothing. On average there are about 100 gun releated deaths EVERY DAY in the USA. That's about 36000 every year when you combine the murders with about 2000 'accidental' gun deaths (mostly kids and adolescents). Barak and the NRA should be proud of these figures. And you can keep 'em. Far away from us, thanks.
