61. Courage and sacrifice
Dov ben Arieh ,   Edinburgh, Scotland   (04.17.07)
Having been involved with both the Lockerbie bombing and the Dunblane massacre, I am no stranger to horror caused by warped and twisted minds. Occasionally, just occasionally a light shines through the darkness and pain and Liviu Librescu was one such shining beacon of courage and sacrifice. I nevere met the man and now, sadly, nrever will... in saddness and humble admiration I say 'Shalom Haver' and tonight, i n one window in Scotland a very, very small light will shine in honour of a truly remarkable man.
62. # 57
Joanna ,   Sunnyvale, CA   (04.17.07)
So you cannot stomach the fact that an Israeli is hailed as a hero? FYI Professor Librescu became an Israeli citizen when he immigrated to Israel. The Law of Return grants an automatic citizenship to any Jew who settles in Israel.
63. Our hearts reach out to the victims
Salameh ,   Gaza, Palestine   (04.17.07)
This horrific heinous crime invites our strong condemnation and sympathy. The victims were from many countries, religions and races to remind us all that we are all one. In the name of the people of Palestine, inside and in the Diaspora we extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to Rose Alam Al-Din family and all the families and wish them to rest in peace, and a speedy recovery to all the wounded.
64. #30-wonderful comment, you self-righteous dunce
Cameron ,   USA   (04.17.07)
As an Israeli, JPS, you of all people should realize the dangers of allowing everyone easy access to automatic weapons. Considering what a murder-pit your own country has become, it ill-becomes you to pontificate about gunfire & bad behavior.
65. Prof. Liviu Librescu - Hero
Johnson ,   USA   (04.17.07)
Thank you Prof. Librescu, and may your loved ones find comfort in knowing you are with God, and that you actions saved the lives of so many. I have a permit to conceal and carry a hand gun, and I rarely leave home without it. In fact, I own several guns, and I am a member of the National Rifle Association. Mans history proves that guns don’t kill people, people kill people, and if there is a will there is a way. There is no way to guard against the random and evil events perpetrated by deranged individuals. So, there by the grace of God go I. I am a firm believer in the 2nd amendment to our constitution, where we have the right to own arms. This amendment is there not only for the individual to protect themselves, and their property, but to remind our government of who is really in charge. I also do believe it is too easy for some to get their hands on gun, and I have no problem with background checks. But, the right for a law abiding citizen to own a gun should never be infringed. If so then only the criminals, gangs, on the deranged will get them, and they will become the proverbial fox in the henhouse. The police cannot be expected to be able to protect you all the time, and one must be prepared to take the law into your own hands. Perhaps, if one teacher, or if one student would have had a gun this whole mess in Virginia may not have been so dang tragic.
66. 62- Well he sure spent alot of time there...
(04.17.07)
Not. He spent most his mature years in the USA and most his life years in ROMANIA_ TOO BAD for you. only 8 years in israel. me thinks you just want to brag and promote a JEW? just because he is jewish---NO?

I take it that Sky news and CNN are not web sites....quite a shallow unnecessary comment
68. These things don't happen elsewhere??
Korem ,   New York, USA   (04.17.07)
These sorts of mass-murderers happen all the time, and usually MUCH worse, all over the world. It's just that in America it gets reported more often, and naturally people are interested in our powerful country's more disturbing internal news than they would be in say, a similar crime in Mali or something. Stop saying this is about Americans being "crazy" or all this, That is nonsense.
69. Land of the free, Jessica?
SR ,   NYC   (04.17.07)
You and your fellow Americans are so full of crap. You wouldn't know true freedom if it kicked in the butt. Yours is a sick and dying society with no culture, solidarity, or social conscience. Anything of value some of you are able to create is soon co-opted, broken down into progressively worse variants, packaged, marketed and eventually turned into dreck. Land of egocentric, ignorant morons, not land of the free. After all, if half of you elected George Bush TWICE - there's no hope for your country.
70. A true hero
Mike Schor ,   Cambridge, MA   (04.17.07)
On Holocaust Remembrance Day, this survivor died as a true hero. "When you save a life, you save the world." My thoughts and prayers are with his, and all the other victims' families.
71. Gun laws or no gun laws...
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (04.17.07)
nuts, maniacs and evil people will find a way and justifications to kill others. If they can't get guns, they'll use their two hands, machetes, airplanes, qassams or suicide belts. You cannot legislate human decency and good sense. Outlawing alcohol didn't work, and outlawing drugs doesn't work, either. There are books full of laws and statutes as respects cars, and yet, people keep getting killed in traffic accidents. Are we going to outlaw cars???? We've lowered speed limits, increased speed limits, made cars safer, etc. etc., all with the same result: Come hell or high water and despite all the testing and driver's ed programs, X number of people will die in traffic accidents. As lame and overused as this may sound, guns, cars, or whatever else don't kill people. Only people do that. For those curious to read the results, when a city council requires one gun per household, here's a link: http://www.mcsm.org/kennesaw.html To quote Thomas Jefferson, one of our founding fathers: "When government fears the people, there is freedom. When the people fear government, there is tyranny." If you disarm the populace, what does a government have to fear???? But through the horror of human depravity, the bright light of the best of mankind shines and gives us hope; in this case Professor Librescu. May he find eternal rest, and may his family and the families of all the victims find peace and the strength to forgive what was done to them. And to those of you who bicker about who lived where and for how long, I doubt that it makes any difference to the dead people or their families. The fact is that one was a killer and the other one is a hero.
72. Gun control - It all depends on the quality of population
SR ,   NYC   (04.17.07)
Look, in Switzerland everybody has a right to own a gun - do you hear of any such horrific incidents in Switzerland? Or in Israel, for that matter? In terms of personal safety, Israel and Switzerland are paradise vs. America's hell. When you import cheap labor from all over the world by the millions, for at least 150 years. When you open your door to the "refuse of the foreign shore" . When a country only has one value: price. Where neighbors don't know and don't wanna know your name. Where people don't come to your aid if you're being mugged - they don't want to get involved because they have a chiropractor appointment. Where children grow up without grandparents and don't play on the streets by themselves. Give a "high quality" population like that access to weaponry and we can see for ourselves what happens.
73. To Mark 30 and Barak
JPS ,   Efrat   (04.17.07)
Gentlemen - I assume you know how to use Google, and a quick search will show you that there are approximately 33000 gun related killings/murders in the USA every year, and depending on your source of info about 2000 accidental gun related deaths. Mark - maybe it's only 100 deaths a year where you live, but the numbers are crazy. The United States is a haven for gun lovers, this is true. It's also an inescapable fact that you Americans in the past decade have manage to butcher almost 300,000 of your own citizens with your lust for guns. Even here in Israel, you simply can't go out and pick up a saturday night special for $15. Lots of guns, yes, but lots of protective rules and regulations about guns too. Nobody here squawks about their "right to bear arms" yet you see guns everywhere. However, unlike America, whackos have a pretty hard time arming themselves. And despite all the war and violence here, nobody except Palestinian terrorists have yet taken it upon themselves to go shoot up a school . Like I said, the NRA and you guys should be proud that this nutbar had the ease to go out and be able to massacre so many innocent people. Gun control would have made it much harder. Gee Barak, you say he got them illegaly? So easily? Why - because that's what America is all about, and it's sick. So when 2007 comes to a close in 7.5 more months, think of the more than 15,000 Americans who will have joined their ranks by then. Yes Mark, the number is real - go google it yourself.

Yahoo too not a website?
75. Hey SR
Jellybean ,   Chicago   (04.17.07)
How can you say those things about Americans and America blah blah...WHEN YOU LIVE IN NYC YOU MORON!!! Please go back or get deported to where ever you came from.
76. Cameron, what are you talking about?
JPS ,   Efrat, Israel   (04.17.07)
Cameron, you should check your facts. Here in Israel we do NOT allow easy access to automatic weapons. They are heavily legislated and controlled. And it is not easy to get a handgun permit either. Yes, all guns are licensed and registered. And what "murder-pit" are you talking about? Googling for the per capita murder rate shows the USA ranks 24th in the world, and that Israel is not even in the top 62 listed. Columbia and South Africa (ranked 1st and 2nd in the world) are murder pits. The USA has a definite murder problem related to guns. Ccripes! 30k people gunned down every year in America and you call me a self-righteous dunce? Israel has a problem with the Pals, but we don't go around mass murdering our own people like you do in the USA.
77. Prof. Liviu Librescu
Chris Townsley ,   Santa Clarita, USA   (04.17.07)
"Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends [students/colleaques/neighbors] -- John 15:13 Yesterday, Holocaust Remembrance Day, we need to remember that we all became (whether we realize it or not) Israelis -- from this day onward to eternity. Ultimately we are on our own and no one, except God, can protect and provide for us. God bless Professor Librescu and his family. Shalom, Chris Townsley
78. The 'HERO' Professor

May G-d avenge the death of this wonderful Jewish, Holocaust survivor, who gave up his life to save those of his students. May his family, and all the those of the other families find peace in their lives once more. Hamakom Yenachem eschem besoch aveili yisroel.

83. The TRUTH
Tom ,   Michigan, USA   (04.18.07)
While it appears that this nut job did purchase his handguns legally, he was breaking EXISTING laws by concealing them and bringing them on campus. Crack is illegal in the USA yet readily available to those who are willing to BREAK THE LAW. We need people to obey EXISTING laws, not suggest new ones. Gun control WAS in effect on the Virginia Tech campus, why didn't it make them safe? Because gun control only keeps guns away from those inclined to obey the law and those folks aren't inclined to shoot you!
84. TO JPS #76-WHERE DID YOU LAND FROM!?AMERICANS GOT IT RIGHT.
SUSAN ,   ISRAEL   (04.18.07)
85. You sick bastards
Michael Gwinn ,   Yorktown, Virginia   (04.18.07)
32 people are dead. There are now 32 families grieving tonight. Do not, not now, not ever, try to bring politics into this. Some things are far to sacred to be blemished by such partisanship.
86. apreciations

89. brave romanian jewish
Escu Cristian ,   Montreal, CANADA   (04.18.07)
This is a true sample of a good man and real hero, a romanian jewish. First of all he was a exceptional man, who was born, lived for almost 50 years in Romania, he did and become phd professor in Ceausescu's Romania and he survived like almost the majority of romanian jewish to holocaust, even Romania was partner in WW2 with Germany. He was a clever jewish, and romanian by born. Just look, men, to his name: Librescu. Like all romanian lasta names, the end 'escu' in the name do you tell something?? After 50 years in Romania, he felt so well in Israel, that after 6 years he left forever Israel for USA. So just a simple math will tell you where he lived the most of time. So, men, ISRAEL dont have any kind of victim in this atack. Only Romania had one victim, and his name is brilliant prof. Librescu. I understand israeli ppl that you try change history and transform the brilliant personalities as german jewish, romanian jewish or russians jewish in ISRAEL jewish, but this is only a kind poor nationalism and ignorance of history. Better ISRAELI ppl, read more history books, and give CEZAR what is of the CEZAR
90. liers, he is romanian
Cris ,   Canada   (04.18.07)
You really like to change all history?? If this professor were a killer for sure you will write that he was romanian, but because he was a hero, now he is a israeli!!! Proud to be romanian like profesor Librescu, proud to not be a isareli lier!
