2. Question raised?
Reality Check ,   BaGolan   (04.17.07)
Not really - just question answered. The fact that there really has been no change in Vatican policy for 1600 years!
3. vatican, guilty as charged
mordechai ,   jerusalem   (04.18.07)
Ambassador Franco should not be allowed to attend commemorative events for the 6 million murdered jews. The only manner for reversal of this policy should be the vatican's willingness to attend such events as German leaders do, understanding that they can never be forgiven and promising to fight against further manifestations of such hate.
4. Confusion
Negru Voda ,   Transilvania   (04.18.07)
This jumbled and murky article is incomprehensible. I believe I detect the notion that the author has a bone to pick with the Vatican. Who doesn't? But Mr. Carmel could use a few lessons in expository prose writing.
5. P12 guilty as alleged
Frank ,   London   (04.18.07)
The reporter was trying to be sympathetic to the Vatican. That is useless. Vatican is too embedded in relations with Arab states hostile to Israel to do anything public FOR Israel. And because it is still am anti-eurabian political force inside Eurabia, it is under the attack from the Eurabists too on the home front. Accusations of Antisemitism weaken the moral authority of the church - hence the Eurabists are not against supporting YadVashem on the current dispute. Franco wasn't offered a deal. Basically, like in a court, he was invited to present evidence for the defence. Defendents are not required to present self-incriminating evidence, and hence Franco passed. Would the evidence have been self-incriminating? My guess is that some would have been bad, and some good. The problem is that if you release this to a potentially hostile audience, it will focus on the bad. The political calculation here is that confirming evil deeds beyond any shadow of a doubt far outweighs any benefits of confirming potentially good deeds.
6. everybody's entitled to an opinion
tom ,   toronto, canada   (04.18.07)
but perhaps yad vashem is actually interested in historical research, rather than posturing and ideology? history is based on documentation, rather than the somewhat strongly-held opinions of this writer. yad vashem is quite right to ask for access to the vatican's documents relating to pope pius xii before changing its account - this is proper "research", not "sleaze". it is surprising that the writer doesn't even acknowledge the existence of scholarly research or how it is conducted.
