MOSHE ,   US   (04.24.07)
IF AN arab IS ANSWERING THE QUESTION, WELL THEY ARE ALWAYS ARAB FIRST & NEVER ISRAELI. AND OF COURSE THEY NEVER SAY THEY ARE mooslim FIRST BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO RELIGION ! MOSHE
3. Stupid poll
(04.24.07)
This is a ridiculous poll, that seeks to divide on an issue that really doesn't need it. You can be a Jew and an Israeli - almost more easily than you can be a Jew and any other nationality. One is a religion, one is a nationality - both are tied together. Stupid poll - stupid article - stupid waste of time - chag samayah, Israel.
4. 50-50
Alon ,   Jerusalem   (04.24.07)
'cause the people didn't know how to answer a question that was a waste of time.
5. For the record, 1st...
Paqid 16 Netzarim ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (04.24.07)
"Israel" and "Jew" are corrupted terms that, khaval, no longer reflect the berit of their Biblical definitions. Many "Israelis" aren't part of Israel and many "Jews" aren't part of Yehudah. I am first a servant of the Creator-Singularity, ha-Sheim, the Elohim of Israel, according to His Torah (which includes Halakhah). The rest is the invention of men pigeon-holing that into some kind of box to fit their preconceived thinking. on rare occasions, somebody, sensible like yourself, says something sensible in Talkback
7. INTERESTING POINT
Shalom   (04.24.07)
Did you notice they used the term "conservative" in the article as describing people's orientation. This is misleading. The survey asked if people consider themselves as "traditional" which most Israelis do, meaning that BarMitzvahs etc are in an Orthodox snagogue and they have a feeling for tradition, etc. It does NOT mean they align themselves with the Conservative movement
8. Israeli
Sepharad ,   Mundo   (04.24.07)
In Israel you should always be an Israeli first. You can be a Jew anywhere (Borough Park, Fairfax district or in Les Marais)
9. ISraeli jew?!?! come on read this!
aaron ,   Jerusalem   (04.24.07)
Jewish and Israeli are two totally different types of identification. Israel is a country. Jewish is a religion. So one identifies with his country and the other with his religion. What about before the state was created ?- I think the idea was to create a "Jewish state" . A place for jews. I dont recall them saying "Israelis need a home". So if you think you are more israeli than jewish just ask yourself what would you be if israel didnt exist? Is your identity dependant on what country you live in?My opinion: Your identity is who you are - not where you live.

14. NATION OF ISRAEL!!!
al mann ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (04.24.07)
Was Abraham Israeli or Jewish? Were Isaac and Jacob Israeli or Jewish? Were the tribes Israeli or Jewish? Were Moses and Aaron Israeli or Jewish? Were King Saul, David, and Solomon Israeli or Jewish? Were the prophets Israeli or Jewish? On an interview David ben Gurion said that the objective of Israel's existence was to become like any other nation on earth. Has that been allowed to work out? Do the nations of the world really want us around? Do they want us to be like them. History has proven otherwise. Thousands and thousands were slaughtered because of their Jewishness and only because of that reason. Jewish is an exilic word. It's time to rid ourselves of that label. The Children of Israel became the Nation of Israel when they accepted the Oral and Written law at Mount Sinai which gave us the right to dwell on this geographical spot in the Middle East. The aim was to be a special people, which the nations of the world hate and because of our denial of our mission as a nation, has suffered extreme losses which no other nation has suffered. Let's erase the words Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, relgious irreligious because we are all one people. Yet it is for each person to decide what is the strength of the committment to the constitution of the People of Israel given at Mount Sinai. There were periods of history during which the committment was weak and the people suffered the consequences--all the people. Sectors were not punished. The nation was punished because of its laxity and disinterest in performing its duties. What the future holds in store is up to each individual and the nation itself. Choices have been made but have they succeeded in bringing the peace needed for so long. Have the modern founding fathers taught us the incorrect ideology? Who can lead us to the correct path? Who can we trust? After 59 years of this modern existence how many wars have been fought and how many men and women have been sacrificed to withstand the attempted erasure of Israel by the Ishmaelites who seek our destruction? To whom can we turn for strength and encouragement? At this juncture in history the answer should be obvious.
15. #14 correct or wrong, the disaster is here !

End of the road Jew - grandchildren highly likely to be either totally assimilated or goyim
17. Israel is a Jewish state
Nannette ,   London, UK   (04.24.07)
Let's face the truth. Israel's a Jewish state, because if it weren't for the centuries of antisemitism in Europe, Britain would never have agreed in priciple to create a JEWISH state. It wasn't created as an Israeli state, but a Jewish state. Anyone who denies this needs to go to school and learn the history of Israel.
18. Why are they presented as mutually exclusive?

22. "NOT enough to decide?"
Avraham Rottman ,   Bet Shemesh   (04.24.07)
The article says in the first sentence that "six decades have not been enough time for most Israelis to decide" and the second sentence says that 95% HAVE decided. Math and c;ear thinking are not the strong points of your writer(s).
23. Learn from Gipsy People !

24. BAD QUESTION - THEY ARE THE SAME

25. Al (14), the general direction of your reasoning
Paqid 16 Netzarim ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (04.24.07)
is commendable -- but some very basic details of your assumptions need correcting. We need objective thinking, not merely recycling the same tired clichés. It's anachronistic to speak of Israel, the grandson of Avraham, in the time of Avraham. Similar reasoning applies to Yitzkhaq. It's even more anachronistic to speak of Yehudi ("Jew"), whose patriarch is the great-grandson of Avraham, in the time of Avraham. Avraham was first Iraqi, then Syrian and, finally, Kenaani. The tribes were Benei Israel. Only the tribe of Yehudah was "Jew." You're right about the berit of Torah defining this people and nation. But the ramifications of that very realization dictate that this same berit of Torah defines the keepers of this berit ha-Torah -- the Orthodox -- "in" the people and nation while simultaneously defining Reform, American-Conservative and irreligious outside, the antithesis, of this people. These distinctions won't go away simply by pretending to "erase" them. You're also correct that compliance, or non-compliance, with that berit will determine our future. 26. What can you connect with more?
DR ,   Florida, USA   (04.24.07)
The land of Israel or the idea of Judaism? For some people, myself included, it is hard to commit to an abstract idea (G_D, faith etc.) but it is easy to connect with Israel. I would sooner die for the country than for the religion! Tough question though!!!
27. a fraudulent pole, without "double citizenship" question

28. Those Corrupt Polititians -- are they JEW of Israeli or...

Animals. I am a jew ! No apoligise Please !
29. It Doesn't Make Any Difference
Dave Levy ,   Burbank. USA   (04.24.07)
Another absurd insult to every Israeli is represented in this article. Goodness gracious, how many more problems do Israelis' need, with Hamas now openly declaring war against the Jewish state. I am an American, that is my nationality. My religion is Jewish, for which I am proud. I am a Conservative Jew in affilitation. I hardly think of myself as Orthodox. My political party is Independent. I tend to vote Republican in national elections. I love Bush and Cheney, and deplore Pelosi, Kennedy, Levin, Feingold, Boxer and Hagel. I want Giulinai to defeat any Democratic candidate, most especially Obama. That said: why any debate over priorities? Israeli's whether Jewish or other are residents of Israel. As far as which comes first, it's irrelevant and a dumb question at that.
30. "self emposed paqid" pride before the fall!! I can't wait!
