I'm the product of a "mixed" marriage, and though I'm no longer Christian, I've seen changes in Catholics vis a vis Judaism that, 30 years ago, would have been unthinkable. If, as used to be the case, someone told one of my Catholic grandkids that they'd have to ask for permission from a priest to attend the religious celebrations of one of their non-Catholic and especially Jewish friends, they'd be dumbfounded and laugh at you. Maybe I can put the whole thing into its proper perspective with a little story: At a religious conference, a Rabbi and a Priest were discussing jb benefits and promotion possibilities. Rabbi to priest: Where can you go from here? Priest: Well, I can become Bishop. Rabbi: That's nice, but then what? Priest: Well, after that, if I do well, I can become Arch Bishop. Rabbi: Then what? Reuven is right. While we firmly disagree with Christian doctrines, rebuking the Catholics for a step in the right direction is self-destructive hate-mongering. Church doctrines have always depended upon suppressing inconvenient history. In this age of archeological discoveries correcting ancient deceptions coupled with the power of the internet to seep into every crevice of every community, suppressing history, increasingly, is history. The combined forces of science, logic and history will force both displacement theologies to come to terms with historical reality, and that is something we should encourage, not stamp out with mindless hatred. If the Vatican truly wants to become a friend of the jews, it must open all its archives, so we can see how complacement they were in the Holocaust. Why start with the Middle Ages? Let's go back to 1500 BC and make lists of who killed how many of whom, and then we all go after each other. You can't change the past; not yours, not theirs, not anybody's. But since you seem to lay so much blame at somebody else's feet, couldn't it be said that Jews brought all those past miseries on their own heads for not obeying god's laws? Sounds horrible, doesn't it? Well, nobody can have it both ways. Wouldn't it make a whole lot more sense for everybody to look to the future, accept and honor each other's differences and try to leave a better world to our kids??? I think, the god of all of us would be much more pleased with everybody.

No one Christian figure can change one word in the Bible to make better relations with the Jewish people. Read "Christian Antisemitism" by William Nicholls. Study the long history of your religion. Ask your priest about Vatican II and it finally declaring that "Jews" aren't responsible for Jesus' death. Replacement theology has been a strong component of Catholicism since the beginning. Until you admit that, you won't move past it.

Cut out the crap and stop insulting people! I was reared Christian, and one of the first things about the religion that threw me for a loop was commandment #1. "I am the Lord, thy God." It didn't say, "We are the Lord, thy God.' For me, things went downhill from there. As for Jesus, he was a Jew - a bona fide, descendant of a long line of Jews - who, similar to the Essenes, had rather unusual ideas about the way things should be that didn't please much of anybody. Given the political situation of the time, his preaching created problems for the Jews and for the Romans, and both sides were glad to see him go. But if you believe he was god and that he died for your sins and that you'll go to hell, if you don't believe it, be my guest. Since I don't comprehend a god who'd be so vicious as to "invent' hell for the children he created in his own image, knowing full well that they'll screw up, I'll just take my chances using the good sense he so kindly gave me. My god lets me know right from wrong, the consequences of either and then turns me loose to live with the consequences of whatever choice I make. As for the new testament, read the history as to why some of the books were included and why some others were suppressed and what was written in the ones that didn't make it.
