1. It's needed
JJ ,   Jerusalem   (04.29.07)
I recently went shopping in Meah Shearim for a loose-fitting vest to wear over a dress blouse and skirt for a wedding and I was shocked at what is for sale over there. I actually found more modest apparel on Jaffa Road.
2. Kashrut certificates for clothing
Aviva ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (04.29.07)
Shatnes-free clothing tags have been around for years. I will give up my lycra when you rip it from my cold, dead, intimate body parts.
3. why don't they worry about agunot
johanna ,   tsfat   (04.29.07)
and try and do something about that ? these rabbis spend too much time worrying about how modestly women dress, instead of worrying about if they are abused by recalcient husbands. they need to do something to insist that these men give divorces, not worry about making sure that the woman's sleeves cover her elbows. they should take away the kashrut certificate of a man who leaves his wife an aguna, not give certificates to women's clothing stores.
4. respect
tom ,   toronto, canada   (04.29.07)
are women so stupid that they cannot select their own clothes? or do the haredi rabbis have so little respect for them? there are no hidden issues with clothing - either it covers enough or not. and women are in the best position to determine this, and if they don't like the goods, they can decide not to shop there. why are the rabbis looking to control women, over an issue where they are neither particularly needed nor experienced? i would suggest that the learned rabbis show more respect for jewish women, and stick to making their living honestly from kashrut certificates where they belong - on food.
5. How far away are we??
Chaya ,   Bat Yam   (04.29.07)
How far away are we from Iranian style modesty patrols? People should wear what they want to wear and not because they are forced to do so.
6. Just OLD Sexually repressed men OBSESSED with SEX
malcolm   (04.29.07)
7. Lycra
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (04.29.07)
Maybe the rabbis are worried that some of the women take that lycra and wrap it around their husbands' necks; just to let them know what it feels like to be "manhandled," of course.
8. Kashrut
charles ,   petach tikva   (04.29.07)
Can't those women see this without the need of a "kosher" certificate . TB # 1 knows it apparently very well , even if she says it's needed , she can make the distinction . It's not food ! there it's truely needed .
9. Kashrut certificate for clothing
Lina Landau ,   Mexico City Mexico   (04.30.07)
Next time the Rabbis get together to establish a modesty court. Ihope they will say NO to lycra made burkas for they can choke the female users
10. Kosher clothing for women?
Philip A. Robinson ,   Framingham, MA U.S.A   (04.30.07)
No disrespect intended by how are the heradi Rabbis different for the muslim Mullahs?
11.  THE LOONEY JEWS
RCA ,   USA   (04.30.07)
As much as I respect their right to practice Judaism they way that they see fit, even though they do not respect others rights to to the same, it becomes more and more difficult not to see these people as THE LOONEY JEWS.
12. The Haredi are making Israel too much like Iran
David ,   Hartford, CT USA   (04.30.07)
I can see these 'rabbis' discussing the finer points of a thong vs bikini panty. I can see these experts sliding the material between their fingers, maybe even sniffing it. I can see that these mostly unemployed freeloaders have way too much time on their hands. If any woman wearing spandex is going to make every ultra-orthodox man think dirty thoughts, then something is very wrong with the men and not with the women. If I see a fine woman wearing spandex, I'll think, "Hey, she has a pretty tuchus," and I'll continue on my way without another thought about it. These haredi men are OBSESSED about it. THEY need to see a therapist- and not one of their rabbis. I swear these 'rabbis' only got the idea from reading about what's happening in Iran- as if that's a role model we want to follow. WOMEN - FIGHT FOR YOUR SPANDEX!!
13. Another Cash grab
Dave from Canada ,   Toronto, Canada   (04.30.07)
This is just another cash grab by the rabbonim. Now the clothing stores will have to pay for a kashrut certificate. The entire rabbinical system has to be changed- have a dual track seminary, where future rabbis are taught business, law, medecine, in addition to Torah, so that they can earn a VERY GOOD living in a regular job, so then they won't bother becoming kashrut peddlars (charging exorbitant amounts for kashrut and making up absurd b.s. like certifying kashruth of vegetables (for crying out loud!), and then they'll charge reasonable rates, restricting kashruth certificates to milk and meat products and only what is strictly mandated by Torah and Talmud, not enlarging on it. When future rabbonim have GOOD PROFESSIONAL jobs, then they will truly be rabbis as a VOCATION not a MONEY MAKING BUSINESS- truly Torah lishma.
14. You must have loved this one!
Shalom   (04.30.07)
Wow YNet you must be in your element. Forget the word kosher as relating to food; it is all encompassing for the world we live in. Do we live a kosher life? Do we speak in a kosher manner (or spread sarcasm, gossip and untruths); do we dress in a kosher manner . .. now do you get it . . . secularists may laugh but your families too, made every effort not so long ago to only buy/make kosher clothes.
15. Kosher clothing
Shayna   (04.30.07)
Last night I had the privilege of attending a screening of a symposium entitled: "Dignity Defined". It was screened simultaneously around the world, in over 100 communites in the USA, Australia, South Africa, Europe, UK and Israel. Reports say that almost every screening was packed. We were treated to modestly-attired yet beautiful, dignified ladies and girls talking about their experiences with modesty; both in clothes and action. It took some pushing to get me there but it gave me a totally new perspective on the word dignity and a deeper feeling for modesty. I believe that any Jewish lady or girl, wherever she comes from and wherever she is holding religiously, could not fail to be moved. Forget the idiots who write about Iran and Islamic dress - we are talking stylish yet modest - in fact the antidote to the current slogan: If you've got it - flaunt it. It showed that beauty shines throw modesty.
16. Dirty old men
arielush ,   ramat ha golan   (04.30.07)
Don't those dirty old men have anything better to think about. What about the problems of agunot. What about poverty? What about the problems of drugs an alcohol within their own community.
17. Sad
CC ,   USA   (04.30.07)
What is happening to us? Are our Rabbi going to become like the idiotic Muslim imams telling women what to wear? Shame!! This is NOT Judaism! This is NOT Israel!
18. kosher clothing
Miriam ,   toronto, canada   (04.30.07)
There is one way to stop this: Refuse to buy from any clothing store carrying a teudah kashrut - and let the store owner know it.
19. #1: To J.J. wha
Arielush ,   Ramat Ha Golan   (04.30.07)
20. #1 to J.J. If we only had a brain
arilush ,   ramat ha golan   (04.30.07)
J.J. What is needed? Are women children. Are we intellectually inferior to me. Do we have to be told what to wear. Don't insult our sex. Look at what you did. You didn't find an appropriate vest you went elsewhere. Women are not children. We do not have to be guided. If we choose to be modest I'm sure we have the ability to distinguish between the appropriate and the inappropriate.
21. Why don't you read before writing???
Shalom   (04.30.07)
some of you make the some comments over and over again, even after someone has already answered the points - it's like watching a load of parrots or a gramaphone record that got stuck!
22. Welcome to Tehran!
Rachel ,   New York   (04.30.07)
23. Shalom (nr 21)
leon ,   Grand Rapids USA   (04.30.07)
The opinion in your comment is the reason I initially didn't post a talk-back; but to answer you, the emotion stirred up by the rabbinical arrogance simply had to be vented by these good folk.
24. You shall be a holy nation...
Jo Jo ,   London   (04.30.07)
What a wonderful new initiative! How apt after last weeks portion of Kedoshim Tehiu. This will bring further sanctity among the Jewish people in an ever morally decaying western society.
25. Kosher Clothing
Vicki ,   Kadima, Israel   (04.30.07)
Whilst totally disagreeing with the chuptza of the Rabanim to start trying to Kosher Clothes. There is a huge hypochrosy among the Haredi women as to what is deemed modest. I personally feel that the figure hugging lycra which shows more of the body off than a loose top is certainly something that should not be worn if someone really wants to be modest. I know very many religious women who wear figure hugging clothing. When questioning them about the fact that I can see their whole body, was told you can't see the skin (long sleeves/long tight skirts). This is just too ridiculous for words.
26. Strictly Orthodox?
David ,   Israel   (04.30.07)
You mean, as opposed to all of those other orthodox people who are just as strict on a wide array of halachic issues, but don't conform to a narrow Ashkenazi cultural sub-group? Shas isn't strictly orthodox? The yeshivish crowd isn't strictly orthodox? The more conservative camp of the national religious movement isn't strictly orthodox? Just you guys? Interesting...
27. Can anybody say "Taliban"?
John ,   Jerusalem   (04.30.07)
28. Kosher Clothes
Abe ,   New York, USA   (05.01.07)
ENOUGH OF THIS KOSHER CLOTHING SHTOOS. I'M OFF TO WATCH ANOTHER RERUN "OF MY SON THE SHNORER" ON THE HAREDI CHANNEL. TODAY'S EPISODE: CHANEE HINDEE BEGINS TO SUSPECT THAT CHAYIM MENDEL HAS AN UNNATURAL ATTRACTION FOR WOMEN'S APPAREL AFTER SHE DISCOVERS HER HUSBAND'S YARMULKA INSIDE HER SHAYTEL.
29. #28- Abe. Very funny Abe !!!
RCA ,   USA   (05.01.07)
LOL! LOL! You cracked me up.!!! LOL! LOL!
30. Certificates made in China
Kum Cin   (05.01.07)
like the clothes, no doubt. What a farce. I hope my favourite store in B.Brak does NOT get one of these superfluous pieces of paper . The owner is a fabulous lady, and I hope ( and 'daven'..ha ha) she doesn't agree to this nonsense. But quite likely she'll be threatened/ find her shop burnt/windows smashed, in true holy b brak 'fashion'. That's all done by the creeps that are the best customers.. 'you know where'.
