1. So sad . . .
Shalom   (05.07.07)
A friend living in an upscale secular neighborhood of private homes with fences all around, is sitting shiva. His neighbors of 30 years don't even know who he is, much less come to comfort him. A friend living in a religious neighborhood, in a small apartment, sat shiva a short while ago - I could hardly get through the door there were so many neighbors and friends coming at all hours to comfort and lend support to the mourners. Makes you think.
2. Bigger story
Israel Israeli ,   Haifa   (05.07.07)
I have a bigger story--Entire town (Sderot) threatened daily with death and government does nothing.
3. This is appalling! Police can do something...
BigE ,   Israel   (05.07.07)
With the help of the traffic cameras, they can look up the license plates of drivers passing through the intersection from all directions and charge everyone of the the drivers with manslaughter!
4. oh now you put this on the english site...
HJ ,   Israel / USA   (05.07.07)
After I stated that you could not read this on the english site, you have decided to put this article for all to see. Yes for all to see just how bad it has gotten in Israel! People try and say that jews love each other, jews take care of each other, jews need help in Israel. Oh wait that one is true. They don't need financial help from the american jews....they need to look at how they treat them Selves as well as their fellow jews....as you can see, if they are going to treat their fellow jews this way....just imagine how bad the goys or arabs have it in Israel!!!!! They are worse then the people of NY...they would have at least stopped and called for help before moving on their way!!! EGO...just remember it starts with you BUT YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY PERSON!!! Only you can help you get over this social dilemma of egotisticalism!!!
5. #3 I was thinking the same...
Daniel van Dalen ,   Jerusalem   (05.07.07)
Charge all of these drivers with manslaughter, indeed.
6. Nonsense
Someone   (05.07.07)
There was no indifference here. What did you expect, that people would stop short in the middle of such a busy intersection. Such behavior would have caused an even worse accident.
7. Its that weak, sick "Mah, Ani fryer" attitude
Russel ,   Tlv   (05.07.07)
Saw this on TV last night... I was so shocked! It was disgusting to see the cowardly drivers going past... then again this is what happens every time I see an ambulance trying to get through traffic - Israeli's just ignore it... Shame on them.
8. Zionist / Jewish Hospitality at their Best
Wissam   (05.07.07)
9. Man left in the street to die like a dog
Roxy ,   Israel   (05.07.07)
This is disgusting that such a thing could happen here and people drive by like he was a dog lying in the street. Someone could have pulled off the side of the road to help,if that would have been done perhaps his life could have been saved. I hope that all of those people who drove by and didnothing are ashamed of themselves! It is also a lesson for motorcycle drivers, donot pass on the left side especially between trucks,it could cost you your life! Follow the same rules of the road like thecars do,don't ride on the left side or between the lanes!
10. well...
Takan ,   Eilat   (05.07.07)
it is shameful and disgusting to see this, in Israel. I would stop for a man or a dog lying on the street. I would even stop for a cat or a bird if it needs assistance. I hope these drivers at least called 100 from their cell phones. There is no word about emergency calls made or not. We should poster this picture all over the country for people to feel ashame.
11. LOWEST LEVEL
DAVID ,   JUDEA   (05.07.07)
First of all i have to say that there realy very good people living in this land. But when one looks at the overall attitude and mentality here, we are not a light among the nations. I am going to repeat something very clearly i am proud to be a jew and loath to be an israeli. The state is not connected nor does it wants to,to judaism. This was and is a zionist goal to be a secular non religious state and the average israeli is very proud of that. One just needs to follow the media to see that . And judging by our leaders one sees ego maniaks, who realy do not have very many human qualities. Hopefully we have hit bottom and we can start going up from here.
12. reality check
yosef   (05.07.07)
Years ago, Israelis would stop and help under any situation. Many people died because well-meaning amateurs tried to help injured people. The government took out advertisements telling people not to help and let the professionals do the work. I imagine that most so-called "egotistical drivers" called for help on the cellphone.
13. Hang our heads in shame!!
Chaya ,   Bat Yam   (05.07.07)
What did the drivers think that was in the middle of the road??? Shame on them!! Even if stopping was not feasible, calling for emergency help certainly could have been done!
14. not surprised
David ,   Sydney   (05.07.07)
I have visited israel every 3 years since 1982 and I notice each time I come that israelis are becoming more individualistic Israelis now have a massive sense of entitlement, are generally selfish and young children are spoilt beyond belief so i am not at all surprised
15. I really, really dont want to say this...
Josh   (05.07.07)
but despite all the hype many Israelis are just as bad and sometimes worse than other nations. No compasion. I can also say I have seen first hand the same disregard for life by ambulance drivers not just once but three times in separate incidents. As a inner city fire medic I cannot believe the lack standard practices. INVESTIGATIVE REPORT please. Only in one of the incidents was I able to convince an ambulance driver to do his job after taking down his number, threatening that I would seek legal remidies if the man died. Only after calling the Hospital doctor was he then convinced he better do something or risk legal ramificatiions. An Arab teen was more concerned about the health and well being of this man than the four ambulance drivers that arrived and never even asked to take a blood pressure reading. It is appauling. Every person who drove past this man knowingly, will get their reward for being so selfish. You will see these people front row on Yom Kippur acting out like they care. Heaven is not blind.
16. Why is this happening?
NYC Girl   (05.07.07)
There was a time when you wouldn't even watch somebody breaking into into your neighbor's car without going out to try and stop it. It's tragic that things have come to this point, but you also have to wonder what effect, if any, the living with the carnage and bloodshed from constant terrorist attacks has had in hardening some Israelis to the suffering of others.
17. It's an absolute outrage!!!
Liza ,   R. Gan   (05.07.07)
There is no excuse in the world for what happened. When I saw the video on t.v. this morning I couldn't believe that it was possible! Usually the public are very quick to react but in this case it was as if something came over those drivers for them not to stop and try to save this persons life. Someone mentioned as if it were a dog lying in the street. I don't wish this treatment on any living creature. It's just beyond me to imagine that anyone would pretend that it was a normal situation. He could maybe have survived if someone had a conscience. Is that what it takes to live these days, for someone to have a conscience?! It would not have created an accident if the cars had stopped because all the surrounding cars should have stopped and it would have been understood that something had happened. Everytime an ambulance stops at an accident scene, does it create an accident?! - Just another weak excuse. Now this man is gone foroever. HIs family are now in mourning and have to live without him in their lives from this day forward and maybe it wouldn't have had to happen if someone actually reacted to it. He woke up like the rest of us, went about his business as we all do and yet he doesn't get helped to see the end of the day because of a bunch of losers who just didn't care enough to stop.
18. YNET editor Mr./Ms. negativity
benteed ,   w. galil   (05.07.07)
Your editor has sunk to new low on finding negative things to sya about Israel If there is one thing we know, it is that herem unlike the rest of the western world ... people DO get involved. Lock your keys in your car and see what happens. You need a cop to control the crowd of people trying to help.
19. dying man
luke   (05.07.07)
convert
20. Ashamed but not surprised
rh ,   Modiin   (05.07.07)
1) Selfishness on the roads is terrible. 2) Time has taken precidence over life. 3) Ten years ago I used to hitch a lft regularly and got picked up by people quickly. The other day I left my car at home and tried to hitch a ride, no one even saw me. 4) Love thy neighbor
21. exception, not rule
long-time resident ,   Israel   (05.07.07)
This instance is terrible, but it is the exception, not the rule. I have often experienced Israelis going out of their way to help a stranger.
22. Conclusions
EM ,   Ra'anana   (05.07.07)
Isn't it possible that drivers went "around" him in order not to run him over (again) but that they pulled over, got out of their cars (not on camera) and helpled him? Before jumping to conclusions...we should have more facts. How long was he in the street? Who did eventually get to him? It is extremely out of character for Israelis NOT to help...so give us the benefit of the doubt.
23. Who is my neighbor?
Jerry ,   United States   (05.07.07)
“A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, the took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
24. Horrific!!! is this what we have become?
Talula ,   Israel   (05.07.07)
A nation of people that don't care about others? It was never like that. Israel always had the feeling of being one big caring family. Things have changed for the absolute worse. It's shocking and sad to read this.
25. It is the result of a bad education
Sabra   (05.07.07)
many Pals during last years where left bleeding to death ....so this becoms a normal behavior ....the problem is are we human or not it cant be devided .....humanitarian education is urgent for all citizens of the region
26. people helping
chava ,   yerushalayim   (05.07.07)
I don't understand this. The other day I fell down while walking. Everyone walking by stopped. Three people helped me. One even offered to do my errand so I could sit and recuperate. And to #15 -- I've had ambulance drivers be very very very helpful, just as they're trained to be. I don't know what sort of exception this case was.......
27. i guess he was not part of the chosen ones no? disgusting...
chadi ,   beirut, lebanon   (05.07.07)
28. Not surprised
Asher ,   Yerushaliyim   (05.07.07)
A person who thinks only of himself is called in hebrew a "Rasha" (Resh, Shin, Eiyin). R-atzon S-hel O-tzmo. A selfish person is concerned only for himself. When I heard that, I thought that was harsh. I look at people driving on the roads as "BeHeymot". Never in their lanes, swerving from one lane to another. Inpatient, stopping in the middle of the street, never using their Blinkers etc. What do you expect from a Beheyma??? Nothing!!!! It donned on me why Israelis don't use their blinkers. 1) laziness 2) they themselves do not know if they are going right or left!!! 3) Do you think a driver is going to reveal to you his next move??????? Sick, is it not!!!!!
29. This Was Exceptional!
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (05.07.07)
Before everyone goes accusing Israelis of being indifferent and apathetic, etc., I must say that I have passed by any number of road accidents over the years and people invariably stop, almost immediately, to get out and help. I have never seen a scene where drivers did not stop to help. Quite the contrary to this rare incident, Israelis are very concientious about assisting injured persons and show a great amount of maturity and compassion in such cases. What happened here was freaky in that no one stopped for so long to help. I can only believe that those drivers who simply drove past were caught by surprise and very off-guard when they saw this poor man lying there and were (mistakenly) concerned that they would create a massive traffic jam if they did stop in that busy intersection.
30. Bystander Syndrome
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (05.07.07)
This man's name might sink into Israel's psyche like Kitty Genovese sank into ours. Who was she? She was a young woman, who was stabbed in 1964 on a New York City sidewalk and who subsequently bled to death due to the indifference of 38 people who could have helped her, but didn't. Reading about it didn't do much. Seeing the horrible pictures did wake up a lot of us to the fact that we were heading down a very bad path, if we can behave like that and believe it's normal. The term "bystander syndrome" arose from the incident.
