1. Mr. Dichter, I have some reasons
RobertK ,   Jerusalem   (05.08.07)
How about Israeli governments that, since 1993, have let their citizens be butchered? The Rabin-Peres govt. allowed 200 Israelis to be slaughtered in terror attacks while continuing to meet with, praise, hug and kiss the master criminal behind the terror, Arafat. They stood in Oslo and received a Nobel Prize with him while ordinary Israeli citizens feared to ride buses and go into supermarkets and cafes. Even more Israelis were slaughtered under the Sharon govt. while he told us "restraint is strength." And what, Mr. Dichter, about the phenomenon of Sderot? Can you point to me somewhere else on the globe where a town is being relentlessly shelled and the country's govt. orders the army to do nothing about it? So maybe this has spread down to the popular level--the lives of Israelis count for nothing.
2. Mr. Dichter, I have some reasons--Part II
RobertK ,   Jerusalem   (05.08.07)
You're the "internal security minister" in a govt. that provides no security at all for people living in Sderot and neary communities, allowing them to be shelled, wounded, terrorized, and traumatized without lifting a finger to defend them. If you're concerned about the phenomenon of Israelis being hurt or killed and other Israelis doing nothing to help them, maybe you should set an example and resign from this government?
3. appauling
Shimon ,   Tel Aviv & soon USA   (05.08.07)
Betrayal Perhaps the Jewish Agency and the Israeli Propaganda Machine can spin this as a victory for Judaism, or evidence of the enemy onslaught on Israel. Maybe there can be another winnograd commission. This country is revolting. I am an oleh, served 2 years in the IDF, and came to Israel believe this country was something special. Unfortunately it is not. People should stop living in the fantasy that Israel is the savior to the Jewish people. Israel has regrettably became a twisted, morally corrupt nation with such a distorted compass that it will never find itself to a future of any promise or hope. At the end of the day, Israel must quit asking why the situation in Israel is deteriorating so rapidly. It is because of the individualistic and moral putrescence of Israeli society. So Israel..lets call it a day and head to the Diaspora where we are still successful at making money and purchasing BMW's, because we sure as hell have no idea to make a nation. Last one out turn off the lights, lest we owe more money to foreign sources.
4. This would NOT have happened in Meah Shearim...
Daniel van Dalen ,   Jerusalem   (05.08.07)
Or in any other Chareidi neighborhood. Shows you what happens to those who throw away Judaism: they gradually lose all moral values. They adapt to the disgusting behavioral norms of the western world. The reasult is that Jews let alone Jew bleed to death in the middle of the street.
5. Human behaviour
Libyan Guy   (05.08.07)
Its really a pity that the life is so cheap in Israel. Peace on your Soul Moshe ...
6. The car insulates from the surroundings
Tim ,   Bracknell, UK   (05.08.07)
I was shown this by a good friend who said to me "I am ashamed of my country." He should not be. Psychologically, when in a car, we are insulated and isolated from our surroundings. We are unlikely to stop for anything, especially "something nasty". We are afraid of nasty things, and people who are dying are "nasty things". We are also, in the main, unable to help. We have no idea about first aid. We are incompetent at resuscitation. We "leave it to someone else" We dial the emergency services on our mobile phones and we "have done our job". We are secure, because "the professionals will come" and we drive on, avoiding the issue. It's not Israel specific, the sin of driving on. In the UK we turn our heads to *look* at the accident, but we, usually, pass by, with our thirst for excitement satisfied. If it had been horse and cart traffic almost everyone would have stopped to help. My heart goes out to the victim and to those who loved him.
7. Dichter - the rot starts at the top
JPS ,   Efrat   (05.08.07)
The examples of disgusting human behaviour starts at the top in this country and works its way down. Anybody who has ever watched the Knesset in session knows what I'm talking about. I won't let my kids watch the Knesset channel. Why? Because the speaker is worse than a lousy Grade 1 teacher (who would be fired if they controlled a classroom the way the speaker can't control the Knesset), and the MKs are the epitomy of rudeness and insulting behaviour. Dichter expects us to behave at a higher level than our leadership? Sorry, but he should look in the mirror and clean up his act and the behavior of his colleagues. In times of need we always know that the members of Knesset will vote themselves pay raises, and protect each other from prosecution - that's the example the rest of the country works off of. Dichter - get up off your tuchis and change it! Show us some leadership!
8. We agonize over it - not like #5
BigE ,   Israel   (05.08.07)
Libyan Guy takes a cheap political shot. He, and others like him, are wrong. We Israelis, as free-thinking people, can understand what went horribly wrong. We can, as a people, make it right. This happened in the 1960's to Kitty Genovese as she was stabbed to death on a NY street and people saw what was happening and didn't come to her aid. Americans then were horrified. (This kind of public behavior what analyzed and called the "Genovese Syndrome".) On the other hand, #5, like so many who come from autocratic, misogynistic and violent societies react politically, while people are treated with gross inhumanity on a regular basis, especially where girls and women routinely abused and mutilated and minorities are not tolerated in the least.
9. Judge carefully
Ilan ,   Ariel   (05.08.07)
Each driver had only seconds to see, take in and respond to the situation. All that time conscious of the cars coming from behind. I would hope that I would see and be able to respond fast enough and properly, but ..... It is never enough to have the desire to help, you also need to know how to implement it.
10. It spreads like a cancer ......
Roxy ,   Israel   (05.08.07)
apathy, indifference towards other fellow humanbeings, there is no excuse for what happened the other day,I don't believe that people who went into the IDF don't have any memories of basic first aid, I do and I have never been in the IDF, but I was a girl scout. Perhaps First aid should be a required class in school as a part of the sports programs in 5th grade and up, basic first aid comes in handy until the police or ambulence arrives and might have saved this poor man's life, may he rest in peace!
11. Mr. Dichter. Your party has ruined Israel. resign.
aaron ,   ra'anana   (05.08.07)
you are a joke, and you associate yourself with looters and criminals of the lowest standing. your friend Olmert has taken us to war and lost, and reduced our deterrence to zero. your friend hirchenson STOLE MILLIONS FROM A HOLOCAUST RELATED CHARITY and who knows what we will dig up on the rest of your Kadima list. RESIGN. GO HOME.
12. Whose Apathy
EM ,   Ra'anana   (05.08.07)
Apparantly the same motorists that you readily accuse of apathy pulled over to a safer place before getting out to help... You, of all people should know that the security cameras only gave a partial view...and even verified that help was on the way within moments. As Internal Security Minister, you should be addressing other issues here, such as why a licenced driving instructor recklessly passed a truck in the intersection . Rather than bemoaning the actions (or inactions) of people on the scene...you should be concentrating on making sure these accidents don't happen.
13. The videos of this need to be shown...
Adam Admati ,   Israel   (05.08.07)
EVERYDAY for the next twenty years on TV and on every screen at every public event WITH Hatkvah playing in the background. Every parent who has raised a 'typical' Israeli is to blame for this horror.
14. avi dichter.........
yaakov ,   Yesha   (05.08.07)
you sit in one of the worst leadership groups am yisrael has ever had to endure, surrounded by enemies ready to wage war on us, and being perceived as weak by these same islamic-fascists we have a government only worried about their pensions and cars, instead you are willing to wage war against JEWS in hevron, gush etzion, etc... be a man and resign!
15. RobertK, what if the guy was a settler?
Lenny ,   Karmiel, Israel   (05.08.07)
Regardless of what one thinks of Kadima and Avi Dichter, how do we justify letting a fellow human being die on the street and not make any effort to help? So because of some politicians you didn't like, we should let him die like a dog, you asshole?
16. Don't Codemn All of Israel
Dave Levy ,   Burbank. USA   (05.08.07)
I saw the film twice on our TV. The comments went something like this, the entire world is seeing an injustice. So, every chance there is to inflame passions against Israel, be sure they are done. If this happened in Washington. D.C., or San Francisco, we would hear that an accident occurred, and several passers-by immediately called 911, but were afraid to stop in the mid-section due to the traffic. (On our freeways, people are told to keep on driving or use the emergency phones). But I have another thought. What is, that person had a bomb strapped to himself? You know, in the M.E. anything is possible. Unless a person is a doctor or para-medic,, treatment can make things worse. Very few people would have offerred assistance I would not have. It's unfortuante, but a fact of life. Don't condemn all of Israel for this accident.
17. cruelty apathy
JL ,   israel   (05.08.07)
and what about all those homeless people that misrad hashikum refuses to aknowledge? and what about all those that have to look in the garbage to eat? does any one see them??..we are a counrty that only cares aboiut money...
18. #9 I agree with you Ilan
mother of four ,   Israel   (05.08.07)
I am glad to see that I am not alone in considering the safety and logistical issues raised by this tragedy. In addition to the reaction/processing time required, the idea that one can slam on the anchors in such a situation is ludicrous. Such an action is potentially dangerous as oncoming vehicles might crash into the stationary vehicle and cause more casualties. Stopping in the middle of a junction will cause tailbacks in all directions and seriously impede the arrival of the rescue services. I wonder if anyone could have REASONABLY arrived in less time than the two people we see approaching Mr Israeli z"l after a minute and a half. Thanks for bringing the matter into the open. I dared to mention it and got shouted down. Remember the first rule of first aid is "don't endanger yourself and create another casualty." BTW #4 Don't be so sure. I've noticed that my haredi bretheren are less likely to muck in than seculars. Clearly I exlude those amazing people from the haredi rescue organisation who are fantastic like their secular colleagues.
19.  i am disgusted by the israeli individualism
dovdevan ,   ashdod ; israel   (05.08.07)
as a new immigrant i am disgusted by the israeli society values !! where is the solridarity that we used to see here ? is this only the reign of money and materialism and individualism ? the pioneer of israel would turn in their grave in front of this sad show !! the americanisation of the society is a big tragedy for israel and is very dangerous for the future of the country !!
20. Hey dumb nut..When you throw Jews out of their homes
Al   (05.08.07)
dont expect better from your citizens. Israel is the first country to throw Jews out of their homes after the Nazis of Europe and the Arabs of Iraq, Egypt and other such shit holes. Congrats DBG would be so proud!
21. Cruel but Not Unusual
M. Martin ,   NYC/Tel-Aviv   (05.08.07)
For all teh hang wringing in Israel over this, they are as usual some 20 years behind the US as far as social disintegration. Last year a BABY was found dead in the street in a town in Long Island. At first people didn't know it was a baby and thought it was a dead raccoon because - SO MANY PEOPLE HAD DRIVEN OVER IT. The baby's guts were probably spilled all over the street as is usually the case with dead animals. Watching the video I did notice that people (notably other Vespa riders) stopped to help teh man, as well as someone who walked over from the right who probably stopped his car out of the frame of the camera. Stopping immediately in such an intersection would likely have caused more accidents. Last;ly, we should remember how Israelis reached out and helped each other when the government wouldn't during last year's war with Lebanon.
22. Not waving but drowning
Raanana   (05.08.07)
Nobody heard him, the dead man, But still he lay moaning: I was much furthuer out then you thought And not waving but drowning. Poor chap, he always loved larking And now he's dead It must have bee too cold for him his heart gave way they said. Oh no no no, it was too cold always (Still the dead one lay moaning) I was much too far out all my life And not waving but drowning (Stevie Smith)
23. Spot on!
Yitzhak ,   Shilo   (05.08.07)
Please - Do not stand idly by in your brothers blood. To those who differed responsibilty, make a commitment to stand up and be counted. We all have the potential to be far greater then we can ever imagine.
24. You of all people Mr. Dichter
Marlene N. ,   New York City   (05.09.07)
should not have written this article since you have a complete disregard for human life, unless you've forgotten about the illegal targeted assassination that killed Saleh Shehada, but also killed 7children. You have a complete indifference to human life like too many of your fellow countrymen. Your humanity was lost long ago..so don't criticize others, and say you feel shame. since you had no shane for the children that you killed.
25. Israel has too many Gods
m   (05.09.07)
Perhaps many in Israel are looking to the wrong source for their security. You have placed other rulers over yourself then God, and when you have any problems you seem to come out with such malice towards them. Yet they only at their best are servants of God ministering to Gods people. But God said in the day of 'distress' go on and call out to these 'false' gods you have made for yourselves and see if they can help you.' Its the one who calls on the name of Yahweh that will be saved.
26. Shame, Disgrace, Dishonour
rh ,   Modiin Israel   (05.09.07)
I was deeply hurt by that video and cannot get it out of my mind. I keep trying to search for understanding as how those people could be so callous. This is not the people I left the country of my birth to come and live among. This is the people displayed in the news reels of the BBC. I just do not want it to be true.
27. #24
Renee, NYC   (05.09.07)
Marlene, your anti-Israel mantra has become utterly mind-numbing. Have you ever managed to find anything positive about Israel, and would you comment on it if you did?

29. The Genovese murder in New York
ray walker ,   Jerusalem Israel   (05.11.07)
Neighbors ignored her screams; no one even picked up the phone to call the police as the man who attacked her came back and stabbed her some more until she died.
30. shock
