What is so hard to understand is why Olmert continues this policy of restraint or ineffective and useless responses like firing rockets into empty fields. Is it because he knows that the IDF has not yet recovered from the horrendous showing in Lebanon and is not ready to fight? Maybe it is that Olmert is being pressured by Rice to continue restraint. What is most impossible to understand is why more mass demonstration s have not been held demanding new elections. Olmert is nothing but a slick politician who doesn't have the slightest idea of how to respond.

What will it take for the Israeli govt. to finally stop the rockets from falling on Sderot? Will it be mass casualties from a direct hit on a school or hospital? Will Israel evacuate Sderot and give up? What Olmert and Peretz do not seem to understand is that showing restraint curries no favor with the US or the Europeans. The US population is supportive of Israel and the chill in relations was caused by the IDF's ineptness in Lebanon since Bush gave Israel a green light to decimate Hamas. Europe is different. The general population is antisemitic and criticizes Israel for any response including doing nothing. So, as long as the US protects Israel's interests diplomatically, the EU's critic ism is meaningless because they would only love israel if it were destroyed. The truth is that Israel needs to have a crushing victory in order to reestablish deterrence no matter what the US and Eutope want.
