Sudan did not fight Israel in 1948 because they were still under British rule. However in 1967 all the Sudanese Jews (a few hundred) were expelled and property nationalised. They also lost their nationality.

Interestingly, Rav Lior's reasoning for why Israel should not accept refugees from Darfur echoes almost exactly the words that the Egyptians used to justify their oppression of Israel in Egypt - that in the case of a war the refugees/minority might rise up and join the enemy.

They shouldn't be allowed to stay in Israel permanetly. This is a Jewish state and we shouldn't forget for whom it was re-esablished. Nor should they recieve free aid. The most Israel should do is help them seek asylum in another country. We have enough trouble in battling those who are trying to wipe us off the map.And are definitely doing a lot more for those refugees, who are from an enemy state, than what any other arab or muslim country has done, which was basically nothing. You can for example read past articles about the egyptians wanted to kill these Sudanese when they crossed into Egypt.

Canada has a lot of experience with refugees. We once took the Vietnamese. Today there are drug gangs formed by the offspring of those refugees. Same thing with the Central Americans. They fled the killings in their countries, settled here, and now many of them are running drugs in Canadian cities. And then other Middle Eastern and Asian and African refugees have also turned to crime. I'm not accusing everyone, but it's disappointing. The same people who inspire you with so much pity today may turn on you tomorrow.

Lots of other people share his views. I'm a secular and I agree that Israel is a country at war and cannot be taking care of refugees at the moment. Israel has its own: Sderot, Gush Katiff.... What we should be asking is why is Egypt mistreating them and sending them to Israel. That is one of the main issues, not whether we like rabbis or not. Why aren't other countries, including my own, doing their part. Why aren't the usual critics of Israel, such as the Muslim countries, helping out, since they have resources and space to welcome them. And what about the thousands that are still suffering in Darfur. Why aren't we doing anything at all about them. This genocide has been going on for several years. Stop blaming Israel. Stop blaming the rabbi. Israel didn't cause the genocide. A Muslim government did.

Its very sad what is happening but in the end of the day they will identify themselves as muslims and will turn on the State of Israel. They are not Jewish and will not be accepted as such by the communities.
