you could have had a palestinian state with 97% of the territory you were asking for and half of jerusalem, the west bank and aza in 2000-2001 when arafat went to negotiate with barak and clinton and prince bandar from saudi arabia. barak gave arafat all of these above and he still walked out of the meeting . the world was stunned. how could he walk out when this was what all the palestinians wanted for a nation of their own. but arafat did and started the intifada. shame on you to blame israel for not wanting peace!
34. Cheerleading: Give me a volley!
Gideon Reader ,   USA   (05.19.07)
Man! The dumbassed ideas are flowing like U.S.economic aid to a third world nation. Ssmart idea to get between Fatah(who IS the enemy of Israel) and Hamas (who IS the enemy of Israel) when they are killing each other? WHY? Let them do their utmost and remove as many fighting age personnel as they are able. It is a net gain to Israel in the long run to standby and cheer both sides as the rounds fly.
35. esrail should fear.............
Reza ,   Tehran   (05.19.07)
israel should fear the day when the missles of the hezbollah made israel into a ghost country israel should fear the day when the missles of the irani with a range of 2000km LAND IN THE HEART OF TEL AVIV....THEREFORE I HOPE 71%of esrails people will not more support atack on iran because they should know iran makes esrail then a ghost country
36. If anything, strengthen Hamas! They are better for Israel
Mark ,   USA   (05.19.07)
Hamas and Fatah are both terror groups who have attacked Israel equal number of times (maybe Fatah more). They have the goals and want to use the same means to bring Israel down. The only difference is that the Holocaust denier Abbas pretends (in english) to want peace so he receives more aid. Hamas at least say who they really are. Hamas is better for Israel in the long run..

40. Don't fall into the trap
Brod ,   USA   (05.19.07)
Israel should not fall into any trap of the dark forces. In fact, it is in Israel's interest to DISARM all the dark forces. Once the arms are gone, there will be peace in the region.
41. this is good
israeli   (05.19.07)
while fatah are not exactly friends of israel, this is good. israel needs to empower abbas so that we may have someone on the palestinian side to work with removing hamas will remove iranian influence on one of israel's borders the idf is getting bogged down in gaza and the west bank, we need a real peace with the palestinians and with hamas in power this will never be a reality. the problem is not with the palestinian people but with the extremists and terrorists we must make peace with the palestinians and deal with the bigger issue, the iranian nuclear program.
42. #33 Barak Offered 98% of West Bank and Gaza?? BIG LIE
Nader ,   Ramallah   (05.20.07)
a Typical answer that we always hear from the Israel's, Barak offered Arafat 98% of the land, well this is FALES and a big lie.. Israel wanted to keep the big settelement in the west bank, and keep top hills unde the IDF control and they wanted to keep control over East Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa mosque. These are just some of the drawback of your offer my friend. And tell me if it is true and that you wanted to return teh 1967 occupied land, why dont you just say YES to the Arab peac plan?? Well I can assure you that you will never say YES to such peace offer by the Arabs because you never wanted peace my friend.
43. Get Real Israel
john ,   nz   (05.20.07)
Israel or rather Olmert doesn't seems to understand who or what is behind Fatah. Olmert only thinks Fatah is Abbas and Abbas is Fatah. The best way to fight your enemy is to let your enemy fight themselves. That's exactly what they are doing now. So why bother them? Cut their power supply and they won't be launching Qassy but stones. Cut their water supply and they will be drinking..argh (censored)
44. #41 - This is not good
Otter   (05.20.07)
If all the Hamas fighters were suddenly kidnapped by aliens from another planet, the Fatah or other groups would take their place firing rockets at Sderot and everywhere else they can reach into Israel. Different names, internal rivalries, same goal: the destruction of Israel. Peace with the Palestinians? Which Palestinians? The few dozen moderates, the ones sick of fighting, are under the yoke of the fanatics, and therefore they have no chance at all of ever having any influence on policy. The PA or Palestine or whatever they decide to call themselves, will be a basket case for decades to come. Just watch how they are indoctrinating their young. Don't for a minute think that withdrawing from the WB would make any difference in terms of bringing about "peace". Gaza is proof enough of what happens when the IDF withdraws. There is no peace partner. None.
45. Comment & question for Nader (42) (corrected version)
sk ,   USA   (05.20.07)
COMMENT: You say that Israel strengthened Hamas. I wonder ... did Israelis vote for Hamas as well? QUESTION: In your TBs here, you indicate that peace is hopeless and there will definitely be war. If you are correct, is there any reason why Israel shouldn't kill you all?
46. 42
Korem ,   New York, USA   (05.20.07)
98% or not, it was a good enough deal that Arafat shouldn't have went that night screaming "JIHAD" to an angry crowd and beginning the reaction that would lead to the second intifada. East Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa mosque are under Israeli control but do you see the destruction of Al-Aqsa? Do Israeli bulldozers interfere in East jerusalem life? Are Muslims not permitted to visit Al-Aqsa and their holy places? The Arab initiative, the problem with it is that it is only demands from Israel and it is no demands from the PA. While I hope some of its basic demands will be fulfilled eventually and that there will be negotiation, the PA has to agree to stop Qassam launchings and its current campaigns to destroy Sderot.
47. what will Olmert say if soilders are killed defending Fatah
zionist forever   (05.20.07)
What will Olmert say to the family of any soilders who might be killed or injured when they go into Gaza and risk their lives to provide support for Abbas. What will Olmert be saying when any weapons he proivided to Fatah end up in terrorist hands .. Fatah are not friends of Israel they have carried out plenty of suicide attacks, some of the rockets fired at Sderot are fired by the Fatah Al Aska Brigades. When Rabin signed the oslo accord with Arafat Israel handed over thousands of guns to the PA security forces ( all in Fatah ) and the terrorists now use those weapons against Israel... the palestians have more weapons than they know what to do with so there is no need for Israel to spend money arming the palestians even more and there can be no justifictaion sending Israel soilders to risk their lives to defend one set of enemies from another set of enemies. If the Israeli politicians want to send troops to help palesians then let them send their own children.
48. Israel getting involved will make problems worse
zionist forever   (05.20.07)
Other than the fact its wrong to risk Israeli lives to help Fatah or for Israel to spend money using the millitary to back up Fatah from Hamas at a time when the IDF is not getting enough money to defend Israel. As well as that the whole thing can only backfire and hurt Israel and Fatah. Either Hamas will take advanatge of the fact Israel is uisng its own millitary to strenghen Fatah who will then be accused by Hamas of colaberation with Israel and it will lead to more fighting Hamas v Fatah fighting and a weakening of Fatah not strenghening. There is also a risk that there will be unitiy between Fatah & Hamas their unified policy will be kill the Israeli soilders who are now going to be seen as occupiers. If the Israeli government is looking to find a way to strenghen Fatah then the worst possible thing to do is use Israeli soilders as some kind of peace keeping force it wont make things better only worse and its either going to cause more palestian infighting or attacks against Israelis. What a shame Olmert and the man who thinks of himself as the best defense minister Israel has ever had dont see this they will only create more problems If the palestians want to try and find a solution to all the infighting then they need to hold ellections both sides need some serious policies to offer right now there is chaos. Israel needs to stay out of it or be dragged into it politcly and millitarily.
49. Israel needs to back off...
Trevor Brooks ,   Huron Park, Canada   (05.21.07)
...while it will be infinitely easier to talk with Secular Nationalists (Fatah) compared to Religious Nationalists (Hamas, Islamic Jihad) Israel can't support Fatah, because Fatah co-operating with Israel politically weakens Fatah inside Gaza and the West Bank. Instead Israel ought urge the Americans and other Western Nations to convince secular and/or moderate Muslim nations, or unaligned nations like India, Indonesia, China, Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Malaysia, Qatar and UAE to support Fatah. If not Fatah, then the Presidential Guard who are directly under the control of Abbas and have shown a willingness to take on Hamas. Body Armour, Assault Weapons, Secure Communications and gear for tracking, infiltrating and spying on Hamas would all come in quite handy and could turn the course of the battle. Another possibility would be taking forces loyal to Abbas and/or a free and democratic Palestine and taking them to Montenegro to be trained by the Montenegrin Special Paramilitary who despite the lack of heavy armour or artillery were still scary enough that Serb nationalists never had the fortitude to try and quell the secessionist independent streak prevelent in Montenegro since the violent break-up of the former Yugoslavia started in the early 90's.
