Sounds suspiciously similar to th percent of Jews who vote republican or actually observe shavuos. Take a poll of how many american jews take off from work/school on shavuous and you'll notice it equals the support of the war in Iraq.

while peace is an important aspiration of the Jewish people, Judaism is hardly a pacifist creed. there are times when one is commanded to fight. the idea that one's devotion to peace extinguishes every other value is alien to Judaism. it is infantile. it is foolish. and, it can, in these times, be suicidal.

The only reason the war was a mistake was because we didn't do it right. We should have followed the Powell Doctrine that basically says if you're going to fight a war, you'd better be prepared to give it all you've got. And people seem to be forgetting that Saddam Hussin was a monstrous sociopath who committed unspeakable crimes against his own people and bank-rolled the families of terrorists who murdered Israeli civilians, so his capture and subsequent execution were positive aspects of the invasion, as were the Iraqi elections. Unfortunately, it's sectarian violence that's ruled the day, but perhaps that says more about Islam than it does about whether our decision to go to war was ill-conceived.

On the contrary. Israel is being unfairly blamed for having influenced the US into that war. And now it may have to suffer from the American desperate measures to get out of Iraq. Israel will pay. Some of the results from the Iraq war are thousands of American lives lost for nothing, chaos in Iraq, the strengthening of the Shiite regime in Iran, and one of the greatest terrorism school on the planet. Its graduates will spread all over the Western world and cause mayhem among all of us. And those are only some of the negative results from this unfortunate war. Others include the weakening of the Bush presidency and hundreds of billions of dollars that could have been used to protect America from terror. Can anyone name one single benefit from this war, aside from the zillions made by unscrupulous American contractors and the political benefits reaped by Iran? The war, and its aftermath, were ineptly planned and ineptly executed. Washington failed to convince Turkey to allow the northern half of the invasion to happen at all (the war started while the "northern" forces were still on their way down to Kuwait, and the result was that the Baathists had much more time to set up the subsequent looting and chaos and to hide weapons all over the place. Insufficient force was used for an actual occupation. And the aftermath was ineptly planned by rank amateurs. The soldiers, and the Iraqis themselves, deserved better thanthis. BUT - cutting and running now WON'T FIX ANY OF THAT. Instead, it will cause the collapse of Iraq. Our friends will see that we abandoned them to massacre, and our enemies will see that we are ready to quit and give them anything at all if they murder enough Americans. And so they will murder as many Americans as they can, all around the world, knowing that we'll cave in to whatever evil demand they make. Idiots. Withdrawal now would have a MASSIVE price tag.

This disgusts me! Saddam would have distroyed Israel long ago had the US not interviened! Remember Scud missiles?? Remember the Patriot missile battries inside Israel keeping the Scuds out?? These Jews were speaking about the war in the context of Judaism, not in the context of the State of Israel. So what does the opinion of some American Jews have to do with US aid to Israel? Don't conflate all American Jews with the state of Israel. American Jews and Israelis often have differing opinions on security issues (see Lebanon war). If you would have read the article, you would have noticed they only had signatures of 1,000 Jews (a very small percentage of American Jews), suggesting that even American Jews are split on this issue. To suggest that all American Jews are represented by such a small population is ignorant and prejudiced, as is automatic association between the opinions of American Jews with those of Israeli Jews.

I did read the article, thank you very much. Since the gist of your talkback was mostly to insult me, I will not concede any point you may have made. While I may be very ignorant of Israeli politics, I am keenly aware of American politics and the demographics therein.

It is unfortunate that there a certain segment of our Jewish countryman in the US does not support their country's effort to destroy a terrorist al-Quaida element in Iraq who's sole purpose is to destable Iraq and whole middle east inorder to destroy Israel and the US.
