I think that this was a wonderful article showing the conviction and strength that one woman had to defy an entire establishment. Crime is pervasive in every culture, denomination, religion and sect of humanity. It is not the crime that should worry those scared of antisemitism. It is the ability of the people to abandon the allure of crime and reform themselves that is so inspiring in this tale. To simply look at the research, the story and the book as fuel for antisemitism is to belittle its value and its uses. One should never stay silent out of fear of the consequences. Rachel Lieberman wasn't.

There have been members of every nation on the face of the earth, and practitioners of every religion, who have committed such crimes. You propose the fact that some nominally religious Jews did such is a reason for antisemitism (the very formation of your language indicates "justification")? That would be the very definition of bigotry. You're in good company with those anti-semites you argue a justification for.

You seem to think the behavior of individuals defines the entire membership of the groups they belong to. I know plenty of ortho-folk. Some are sinners and some are saints. The saints are the one's who get it and live by what they preach. The sinners are the ones with a ways to go in that regard. To assume any religious person who talks about his principles is a hypocrite as an excuse not to listen to what they have to say with an honest ear is intellectual perfidy. Its not upright. I don't agree with a lot of what I hear coming from the ortho world (esp. the hareidim), but it hardly means they don't have the right to speak, or that all of them don't live by their principles. It was reported and warned against at the time in the Jewish press (not Jewish Press, please!). An Argentinian Jewish friend (living here) says everyone in the community knows about it there. Judith Katz used it as the basis of her novel, The Escape Artist, in 1997.

Therefore, what is the noise about this book? is there any new revelations or a systematic study of documents and oral histories that we are a contribution or a revelation?

As i wrote in another tb , we have all sorts of people . We have'nt to be effraid from telling the truth , nor have we to be proud of this part of our history . And this has nothing to do with self hating . There are much more Jews we can be proud of . Look only at the more than 150 JEWISH Nobel prize recipients . Those are also part of our people , and some also received this prise 100 years ago , is this also digging out old stories ? not of course .
