I remember reading just a few days ago here on ynet about how tel aviv was/is the secular city and jerusalem is/was the religious city. If gays believe they should have the right to be gay, and want respect for their belief, Israel's religious Jews also want respect for their belief that there shouldn't be any gay parade in Jerusalem. I can't recall any gay in Israel's 60 year history being hanged or killed in other manner for being gay . If there is a need for a parade to ask for equal rigths it should be in Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia or other countries where they hang gays and kill them without trial.

Traditional Orthodoxy holds that Lev. 18:22 prohibits any man-on-man action. Woman-on-woman action is prohibited by some "emanations and penumbras" that the Rambam pointed out. My impression is that these boil down to women will not be servicing men if they are servicing each other. Be fruitful, etc. However, there is no death penalty for w-o-w action. Other interpretations are quite different. Some say that the prohibition was against anal intercourse between men. Others say that the prohibition was directed against anal intercourse with male temple prostitutes, who were selling their services as a substitute for "proper" temple offerings. There was an interesting analysis of Talmudic selections in Israel National News a while back that traced out a history of this prohibition. Because anti-gay bigotry has been the norm for so long in what we call Orthodoxy, Orthodox rabbis (particularly among the Haredim) have taken the easy way out and have proclaimed the whole issue simple & settled. It is their goal to march on J'lem for it would be a feather in their cap. these people are insiters and to prove it lets look at what neighborhoods they want to march through. Well, once upon a time, that is what they did, but society did not leave them in peace. The gay pride, like many symbols, is a "never again" symbol - the gay community is saying that never again will it let itself be opressed like this. Of course, I do agree that it would be wrong of them to have a parade in Jerusalem where everyone was butt-naked. Those do happen and are that's OK for where they are accepted, but in Jerusalem - as any of the bigots who protest the parade would know if they took a look - by and large, the parade is very low-key. The protest against the parade make significantly more noise than the parade itself! The parade being held in Jerusalem is not to be provocative. It is for the gay community to remind themselves and everyone else that never again will they allow themselves to be oppressed.
