Of course Olmert wants Peres to be president, President Peres will no longer be vice prime minister, no longer have any power, and will be in a position to pardon him when he finally gets convicted of all his bribery, influence peddling, corruption charges etc. Peres is very suitable for President, it is a ceremonial job with no power, nothing to do but kiss babies and perhaps babes. The elected president of Israel is not a political figure as such and must not have any affiliations to any political parties. Shimon Peres is an old man now, he is an intelligent man and a decent clever man. He has tirelessly served his country, for the good and the bad. The least this state can do as his last hoorar is to give him the presidency. He won't be pinching any bums or boobies, I'm pretty sure of that. The presidency is almost like putting a great man out to graze with dignity – let him spend the final part of his life as a president of the country he loved so much and not as a failed Politian. He has put so much in, he really deserves something back.

Naturally Olmert should want Peres as the next pres. When you mess up everything as Olmert has you must back someone who is equally as bad as you. Get rid of these losers and Peretz and Livorni at the same time. Poor Israel what a load of rubbish

peres has done marvelous work in his prime. peres is a dreamer, and dreamers are important to a state ... dreamers can imagine visions that only will be reality in the far future. peres helped to stabilize the New Israeli Shekel when inflation was killing the Israeli economy in the 70s and early 80s. peres has helped transform israel into a thriving science powerhouse. peres created the hi-tech culture for the IDF and all security branches in Israel. peres is recognized internationally as a seasoned, wise and intelligent diplomat, even if most of israel can't stand his outdated politics. peres has worked tirelessly for peace. and yet, despite all of that, Shimon Peres won't be perfect for president, not after katsav. peres is notorious as a womanizer. why do you think he never minded that his wife (refuah shlemah be upon her) never attended public and discrete diplomatic functions with him? and this is the man olmert wants as the next president of israel? i for one am not surprised.
