this is only the tip of some horrible iceberg. We lived, literally, right on top of the Westwall where the Nazis used a lot of Russian POW's and what looked like civilians from Poland -a lot of women included with the latter group- as slave labor, building those useless anti-tank ditches. Although, being a nosy kid, I know how some of the women disappeared, but I've often wondered what happened to the men, who froze and were worked and starved to death. They'd be there one day and gone the next, and I don't remember a single funeral for any of them. Worst of all, the guards would make some of these poor people sing and beat them with rifle butts, if it wasn't loud or happy enough. Oh, I know, just like the holocaust, none of this ever happened, either. It's only something a 5 year old kid made up. But how can you describe Godzilla, if you've never seen the movie?

There must have been local Ukranians aware of where the bodies were being buried. But it seems that nobody asked them or perhaps they chose not to disclose this location. I wonder how is this being handled by the local press, by the schools.... How do you know these are Jewish corpses.Can one tell a Jewish skeleton from a non-Jewish skeleton??

A lot of different ethnic, religious, and national groups were killed. And not all of those killings were done by the Nazis. Maybe these remains belonged to Christians murdered by Bolsheviks during the 20s? Maybe they were Polish army officers murdered by Stalin's willing executioners? Jews weren't the only people that were killed in the Ukraine or during WW2. Oh I forgot ....... for Jews, only the Jews count.

First off, Polish officers never made it to near Odessa. You I'm sure know that. Secondly, locals always knew that somewhere close by Nazis murdered lots of Jews. Thirdly, Odessa had a very large Jewish population, many of whom didn't have a chance to leave before Nazis occupation. Ask any Ukrainian in their 80's whether there's a place nearby where Nazis murdered Jews during WWII - they'll tell you of one or two. My own relatives are buried in Babiy Yar, Nizhin and somewhere in Odessa in mass graves. Bolsheviks were mostly Christian too; Soviet terror didn't take off until Ukrainian Stamine / 1930's. Go do some studying. As for the different ethnic groups - in Ukraine, mass graves could only hold bodies of Jews/Gypsies or Soviet prisoners (who for the large part were shipped to concentration camps to do labor for Nazi war machine).

Ukrainian pesants weren't shot enmasse for those of you who know little about Soviet history. They were starved to death or sent to Sibiria. That happened much earlier than the onset of WWII. As for the Odessa, those of us who were born and lived in Ukraine/Soviet Union all know is a city with a very large Jewish population pre and even after war. Locals who lived through WWII if asked would tell anyone that Jews were shot somewhere near. Every town small and large in Ukraine has a mass grave where Nazis shot local Jews. My great-grand parents' siblings were murdered in Nizhin and Kiev's Babiy Yar. Some distant relatives murdered in Odessa but I don't have any clue where.

Tracy, you are absolutely right. During the Soviet times, it was always preferable to call any victims "Soviet citizens". There were many many Byelorrussians, Ukrainians and Russians murdered during the WWII of course. But for anyone Jewish, of course, there was only one way - to be murdered.
