3. You cannot run the best army by compulsion
a father of two sold ,   Israel   (06.08.07)
Not only pilots but all soldiers are very much under paid for the best army in this region! More over the un-employment help they were receiving after their national service is stopped from 1st of July this year. Children have nothing to look forward for, why should they want to serve? After the army service; these children will have to run about searching jobs to pay for their further education, how and when will they complete their education start flowing in to the main stream? Israel is loosing its back bone, interest of these children to serve the nation. You cannot run the best army by compulsion; bit of incentives will relieve them of their tension encourage them to serve the nation better.
4. These are truly alarming news.

The IASAF (as the correct title of the Israeli Air Force is) is in fact the only force that kept, and still does, Israel independent. People should do more to preserve its more precious asset: its human resources.

this is a nobrainer--increase the wages and compete with the private sector.

Only last night I reviewed the Military Channel's documentary on the 1981 Israeli strike on the Iraqi reactor. Could it have been accomplished without a PM willing to ignore international reaction, an audacious military willing to think outside the box, and pilots ready to put their lives on the line for the mission? Could such a mission be accomplished today? With a PM willing to see his country dismembered in the name of a "peace process" so long as he stays in power? With a military unwilling to accept casualties? With soldiers unsure of their mission? I don't blame the IDF - I support them wholeheartedly. But as my father used to say, "the fish stinks from the head". Those in positions of leadership set the tone. If they and their families don't believe in the justness of their cause, if they're "tired" of fighting and winning, if they're more concerned about money and power than country, the rest follows.
9. Pilot leaving Israel
(06.08.07)
I know one pilot who is moving to the US this summer with his family. He was motivated enough to serve, to learn - shame on the government sof Olmert and Sharon which have chased away "our best"
10. its the governments duty to act NOW
jack bauer ,   usa   (06.08.07)
to correct this issue. The Air Force are usually the 1st responders and are absolutely neccessary for the defence of the land of Israel. The govt. cannot afford to let the veteran pilots leave because they feel disenfranchised or underpaid. The experience of older pilots will be crucial in the times ahead. - DO SOMETHING about it !!!
11. how can you blame them ?
RCA ,   USA   (06.08.07)
Jobs in general aviation and in the civilian military industrial complex are where it's at. Time for across the board pay increases.
12. politicians created this problem
zionist forever   (06.08.07)
sucvesive Israeli governments on both the left and right have slowly been neglecting the millitary more and more since the late 80s. There have been no full scale wars and the IDF has been relegated to more of an antoi terror force .. where is the attraction of spending years learning to fly an F16 if the most you ever do is drop a bomb in Gaza now and again there is no skill and I imagine that for many pilots doing that does not feel like they are defending the country and its not appreciated as much by the public. Now there is now more money to be made in the private sector who wants to stay in a millitary where your not appreciated. Reserves dont get the kind of training they once did so are not prepared for war and they dont get decent equipment that all goes to the smaller regular army .. reverves get stuff thats outdated and some dont even get basics like body armour. Succesive governments have used the millitary a the source of financie for high profile civilian projects .. this ministry doesnt have enough this year to finance a project .. ok lets take it from the millitary without the US millitary aid with the kind of money Israel gives to the millitary these days Israel would be a second rate millitary power. Saudi Arabia over the past 2-3 years has spent around $20 billion on their millitary, Syria is spending with help from Iran and Russian subsidies around $11 billion, Iran spends billions, Egypt spends much more on their millitary than Israel does and they get the same millitary aid from the US as Israel. The IDF has been neglected by the politicians the public might appreciate them but the government does not. If the government doesnt pay you well, they dont appreciate the job you do and dont give you the money to invest in keeping your men safe and giving them the equipment they need then who would want to stay if the big companies want you and show their appreciation through pay and treatment.

15. Connecting the dots
Carl ,   Indianapolis, USA   (06.09.07)
When you connect the dots, what you get is a plan - not deliberate, I'm sure - to weaken the country. Think about it: It says here that these airmen don't even get proper training or sufficient pay. Then the defense budget was cut. Whatever is left is plundered for civilian projects. There is lack of proper bomb shelters and gas mask for the civilian population. Then there is the surrender of land and the creation of internal refugees. Add to that the freedom with which treasonous MKs are allowed to act and to say nothing of the cases of corruption and misbehavior among politicians. By creating a state of military weakness and public demoralization and apathy, the government has set the country on a course of self-destruction. We all like to blame the Arabs, or the Americans for many of Israel woes, but the fact is that Israelis themselves are responsible for the mess they are in right now. Time is indeed running out. Unless the government changes course - or there is a change of government soon - there are very difficult times ahead for Israel's survival.
