31. Israel offered Einstein the presidency, why not he?
Steve ,   USA   (06.17.07)
B"H Israel offered Einstein the Presidency and he said no because he could not. Now you have Israel Aumann right inside your boarder, and Shimon Peres does not offer his spot. I do believe that Israel Aumann is a true genius, certainly in the spirit of Einstein. There are capable candidates to be offered the post who still end up in the opposition.
32. I couldnt have said it better
jack bauer ,   usa   (06.17.07)
kudos to you Israel you should run for something in the next election
33. Hazak
Schvach   (06.17.07)
Hazak v'shalom - truer words have never been written. I'm a fellow graduate of CCNY, and whether it's Israel or 145th Street, strength always works. Conceding land to Israel's haters delivers only one message - the land has no value for Israel, and that only serves as an invitation for more demands to be levied against the Jewish State.
34. #25 Terry, I second request for weekly columns
Otter ,   Canada   (06.17.07)
by Professor Aumann. The Leftist columnists should hang their heads in shame. The policies they advocate have brought Israel to the brink of self-destruction.
35. speak more often
Robert ,   Washington, DC USA   (06.17.07)
you are a wise man. (and you look wise, to boot).
36. Johnny, You Are Right.
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (06.17.07)
Well said, Dr. Aumann.
37. AS ALWAYS YOU ARE GREAT . THANKS PROFESSOR
David   (06.17.07)
38. Talk, talk, talk
marya ,   sacramento, USA   (06.18.07)
The left's anwer to everything is to talk: A verbal threat - talk. A bus bombing - talk. Murderdered Jews- more talk. ENOUGH of talking and trying to talk to our enemies -- see what they do to eachother? That should be proof they talking means nothing. Do what the good professor suggests -- TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN AND FIGHT BACK!
39. The educational system needs to be reformed
A.D. Weiss   (06.18.07)
to reflect Torah values and values geared towards Israel's self-preservation as a Jewish country. A secular multicultural outlook is wrong in Australia, Canada, and the US, and is even more wrong in Israel. Jewish children in Israel have been brainwashed by the Left and the result is for all to see in Israeli lifestyles, the lack of respect for Jewish land with their readiness to trade it for false promises of peace, their acceptance of anti-Israel propaganda, and in the general apathy or, as Professor Almann's rightly describes it, in a "defeatist state of mind" which endangers the survival of the State of Israel. Educators have great influence in how a society develops, and Leftist educators have been steering youth towards relativistic values in all areas of their lives, including those of national values. I agree with Professor Almann views and recommendations, and with many of the comments here, but I'd like to add this: Take back the schools. Restore Torah values. Bring back patriotism into children's lives. Discard political and moral relativism. Judaism is not just another religion. Israel is not just another country.
40. Peace is not made with enemies
Wallace Edward Brand ,   Alexandria, VA USA   (06.18.07)
"Peace is not made with enemies" is faulty logic. Peace is made with "former enemies" who have been convinced that peace is more advantageous to them than war. That does not describe either Fatah nor Hamas.
41. #27 Roscio
A.D. Weiss   (06.18.07)
I submitted my comments before I had the chance to read those of others. I can see we are of the same mind. You are quite right, we have to start with the educational system. I hope there are many more people with the same ideas in Israel who will fight for their implementation.
42. Lubavitcher Rebbe Ruling
Dr Mat Gelman ,   Melbourne Australia   (06.18.07)
The Rebbe stressed the danger of even talks about peace.Echoing this the ex-chief of staff Rafael Eitan spoke of the need to maintain a persistently aggressive stance as the the only means of ensuring that our enemies back off. Peace cant be achieved through talk or surrender.
43. Testosterone
Michael ,   Haifa   (06.18.07)
Auman really manages to raise the testosterone levels of the right wing lunatic fringe rabble in talkback
44. 42 Dr. Gelman: That is an unusual religious ruling
abdullah ,   germany   (06.18.07)
So perhaps you have taking the statements out of context. Simply b'cos from a religious perspective, the only chance of peace is through "divine" intervention at the time of the messianic redemption. Speeding up the "redemption" requires a religious/moral change in the heart of bnei yisra'el in which they completely trust in G-d and not in any human attributes, such as military ability or game "theoretic" models. Putting one's trust in the predictions of game "theoretic models" or old roman military philosophies, is certainly at odds with the required "tshuvah" that is to bring about the true redemption and peace (see the shabbat rosh chodesh haftara from prophet yeshayahu). The respected Nobel laureate is absolutely right that only the strong militarily (not necessarily their weaker allies) can truly have peace, so long as divine providence is NOT attached with them. But if the divine providence is attached to them as it is with benei yisra'el then only complete trust in G-d and by implication little trust in military strategy can bring peace. So in the interim without this absolute faith in G-d among all bnei yisra'el, the focus is not peace but trying to save Jewish lives (physically and morally), which the torah and sages attach immense value to more than any commandment other than the "cardinal sins". In other words working towards a political solution, which limits the bloodshed, even if there is doubt about success, halacha requires trying. The argument from those from the religious community that support more aggressive approaches is that they believe that this saves more lives than the less aggressive path. However, game theory, does not prove that more lives are saved by the more aggressive approach but the contrary. Saving jewish lives might require an aggressive approach but not at the expense of a reasonable political soln, and thus such aggression needs to be measured. That appears to be the wisdom of kohelet 3 in the Hebrew bible. So re-check the context of the lubervitcher rebbes comments.
45. Resign Nobel Prize before advocating war
oscar ,   buenos aires   (06.18.07)
Dr. Aumann can´t talk this way on behalf of Nobel Prize.
46. Nobel laureate confirms that jews are afraid of war
oscar ,   buenos aires   (06.18.07)
47. Breaking news: Nobel laureate calls "cowards" to jews
oscar ,   buenos aires   (06.18.07)
Dr. Aumann is a jew who lives in US. He is not thinking to move to Sderot nor Gaza.
48. Oscar (#47) doesn't know his facts
Raymond from DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (06.18.07)
Contrary to your faulty knowledge, Dr. Aumann is NOT "a jew who lives in US". He is *from* the US, but has lived and taught at Hebrew University in Jerusalem for decades. Know your facts next time.
49. to 5
lili ,   jerusalem   (06.18.07)

50. Thank you, professor. I admire you immensely

51. Completely & Totally TRUE
malcolm   (06.19.07)
52. Freedom only Without The Biblical Faith!
OO Secularism   (06.20.07)
No to the one sided Jewish views of I. Aumann. Aumann, Tariq Ramadan, and the Muslim Brotherhood are equal enemies of freedom. We need a majority of secular Christians, Jews and Muslims to assure our freedom from Iraq to Gaza, from Iran to USA. Including old Tripoli.
