1. Meanwhile, in Damascus...
JPS ,   Efrat   (07.10.07)
Sorry, but the local Salaam Now guys are still in jail on charges of being zionist spies. There was a group of Syrians with Israeli flags at the entrance to the city... but they stomped on the Israeli flags then burned them while chanting "death to Israel, death to America". Maybe the Peace Now folks should travel to Syria and help hang Syrian and Israeli flags at the entrance to Damascus. Bottom line: Syria is still not serious about peace with Israel.
2. Deaf, Dumb, blind and STUPID
Lemar ,   uk   (07.10.07)
If Peace now (or their likes) would be in power there would be peace as Israel would no longer exist. How dumb can you be that you cant see that the Syrians ie Iran would soon make Israel into the same as all the other Muslim countries, 'Jew free'
3. BET THEY'RE HANGING ISRAELI FLAGS IN SYRIA RIGHT NOW
Jonathan ,   Israel   (07.10.07)
Put out a Zionist Entity flag in Damascus and that won't be the only thing hanging
4. We asked they declined
Eve ,   Canada/Israel   (07.10.07)
How silly some people can be!!I suggest PEACE NOW go to Gaza and spread their message of love :)
5. Peace Now does not represent the people of Israel
RBY ,   Tel Aviv   (07.10.07)
Just because these people have a lot of time on their hands to put up Syrian flags doesn't mean they represent the people of Israel. To the contrary, the people I talk to understand that we must have peace through strength, as Reagan proved and as has been proven throughout history. Yes, all war is bad, but one must be ready to go to war to insure the peace and security of the nation. This is history; this is fact. Peace Now people need to read a history book once in a while to see what peace through weakness and appeasement has wrought throughout history. "Peace" is a word that means different things to different people. To the Muslim, peace means that the Islamic Ummah is in place and the dhimmis/infidels are under his foot. To the Jew, peace means living side by side equally and securely without the threat of war. You people need to take the blinders off and see reality for what it is, not for what it should be.
6. Let's see them try that in Syria - a stay there too...
Jacob ,   Israel   (07.10.07)
7. Sent by Olmert to "SHOW" that public wants to leave Golan
Yisrael ,   Bangor, Maine   (07.10.07)
8. syrian flags!!!!!!!!
robert morley ,   farmington   (07.10.07)
if syria has there way it will be just syrian flags flying over jerusalem i have never seen a country like israel that is so determine to self destruct. may the lord forever bless Israel.
9. Flags
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (07.10.07)
With all due respect for democratic principles, this flag business really sucks. Those Syrian flags should have been gone before anyone had time to take a picture. Don't y'all have any good ol' boys over there who'd take care of things like that????
10. Even the sky is no limit.....
FO ,   Belgium   (07.10.07)
Even the sky is no limit to the stupidity of "Peace Now". What should be the subject of the talks with Syria? The Golan Heights? Don't you still not realize that you want to GIVE them to Syria, and not GIVING BACK? And You Mr. Oppenheimer, "director" of Peace Now, the time has come for you, even if it is quite late, to learn the history of your own country, If it still is (Sorry, I can't refrain from thinking about your colleague Avrum Burg) and to discover that the Golan Heights never were Syrian territory, but were ceded in 1923 by Britain, the mandatory of Palestine, to France, the mandatory of Syria, and this in flagrant breach of the resolutions voted unanimously by the League of Nations, the 24th of July 1922. For your facility, you find everything on Internet, the resoutions of the League, the maps, and if needed you can even contact the League of Nations Archives at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. I wish you Mr.Oppenheimer, a fruitful study on the matter.
11. Keep Olmert's feet to the fire
Richard Silverstein ,   Seattle, USA   (07.10.07)
Olmert's word isn't worth the paper it's written on. But it's good to take his word at face value & force him to keep it or explain why he's failed to do so. Olmert wants negotiations with Assad as much as I want root canal surgery. Let's see if he's truthful in saying he wants negotiations or whether he's posturing.
12. peace now are desperate for media attention and get it !
redmiike ,   tel aviv and london   (07.10.07)
peace now is a sad bunch of people that thrive on the articles that get published. Stop the articles and these miserable wretches will crawl back into their holes. While they're busy hanging flags Syria is saying 'no' to talks. They are not pro peace or probably even anti Israel they are simply desperate for attention and are not bright enough to get it by way of achievement.
13. to 2 and you are the intelegent opend eyes one ?? lol
(07.10.07)
You live still in the darkness , you walk up , the people in the area wants to live once in peace and they are in the UK like you , so shut up and leave them to decide what they need .
14. Beautiful image
Rodrigo ,   Brazil   (07.10.07)
Disregard the criticisms, Peace Now. That's the image the world wants to see: a loving-peace Jewish State offering peace to the neighbours... Yeah, pacifists there cannot to that, but you can... Beautiful image...
15. BARUCH & ITAMAR TRUE JEWISH LEADERS
DAVID JACOBS ,   HASMONAIM,ISRAEL   (07.10.07)
The current goverment of Ehud Olmert tzipi Livni want to appease the enemy and commit suicide. Israel needs to elect Baruch Merzl and itamar Ben Gvir they are the best.
16. Look Around YOU!
marie ,   vancouver, canada   (07.10.07)
What do you see? Over 20 Arab countries! How can Israel live constantly in state of Paranoia cuz of its Arab neighbors!??! Just cuz the US tells you so, just cuz the US uses Israel as its US Army Base in the middle east. What if the US takes its hand out of Israel...thats alot of angry Arabs that Israel failed to deal with ages go. Good Job Israel!
17. Syrian flags and Israeli hatred
English guy ,   London   (07.10.07)
What a surprise to read the list of anti-peace talkbacks, of people so incensed by the idea of peace that they are jumping up and down, and screaming the usual 1984-style garbage "Peace = defeat" "Peace = war". What an Alice in Wonderland world they are living in. Of course no one is hanging up Israeli flags in Damascus - if you haven't grasped that the neighbouring country has a different political system then you really are a bunch of simpering morons. However, it is shocking to read the reactions here - whenever Syria is mentioned. They are those of fishwives on acid, unbecoming, unseemly and totally wrong. Avenues to peace should be explored as the only alternative is an avenue to war. However, a persual of many, many of the talkbacks on YNET would indicate that many of the most vociferous posters appear to want war. As for the reactions towards Syria, almost all the postbacks here show a deep and abiding sense of igorance, hatred, bigotry and lack of understanding of the value of human life. Possibly quite representative of the body politic of Israel.
18. Israeli Flags In Damascus
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (07.10.07)
Many talkbacks want Peace Now to try hanging Israeli flags in Damascus. I personally think the IDF is better qualified to hang our flag in Damascus, too bad there won't be a Syrian gov't. to see it.
19. Picture
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (07.10.07)
It is very early here, and I'm normally thankful to wake up to another day, and my morning disposition is usually fairly chipper. But sitting here, waiting for my coffee and seeing the picture of those flags side by side is really pissing me off and irritating the hell out of me. Just as yelling "fire" in a crowded theater is not covered by "free speech," there is something treasonous in the intentional "exhibition" of one's flag between and next to the flags of an avowed enemy. This sort of display is reserved for places where the 2 sides carry on negotiations and as a symbol of protection of either side by the other for the duration of such negotiations. How many Israeli flags have these homegrown asshats managed to set out on the sides of roads in Syria?? What's next? Hamas flags over the post office in Sderot?
20. There is already peace with Syria!
Jew ,   Jerusalem   (07.10.07)
The Golan border is the most quiet border of Israel with no Kassam, smugglers and car thieves. They attacked us and paid a price. Now there is peace. Also Turkey controls the former Syrian region of Alexandretta (Hatay) and they even have diplomatic relations. So no reason to change the status quo. Let Syria flag Damscus with Israeli flags and return the body of Eli Cohen, then we talk.
21. #19 and suggestions
English guy ,   London   (07.10.07)
You asked "what's next? Hamas flags over the post office in Sderot" - but I think that the surprise value would be lost. My suggestion would be Hizbullah flags over the town hall in Atlanta, or perhaps one of the districdts of Atlanta to be twinned with the Yarmouk refugee camp outside Damascus, or perhaps the whole of Atlanta twinned with Gaza.
22. To English Guy re Israel and Syrian reality
JPS ,   Efrat   (07.10.07)
Dear Anglo Dude - please note that nobody here is against peace with Syria. Unlike you folks in the UK, who seem to be very removed from modern reality, we Israelis understand and accept that Syrian leaders talk about peace when talking to the press in English, then turn around and talk about war when speaking in Arabic. Why is your alternative to peace unquestionably war? Says who? You? And if the Syrians say it's either peace or war, why aren't you asking them what they're doing for peace? Why is Syria talking about war - have you posted anything on any Syrian newspaper talkbacks? Oh right, they don't have talkbacks in Syria because the government puts talkbackers in jail. We Israelis know that for Syria, peace with Israel probably means the end of the regime there. Assad and his henchmen, of course, are obviously not interested in that at all. They also don't like international sanctions against Syria - a direct result of Syria's war mongering, brutal military occupation of Lebanon, apparent involvement in the murder of Hariri and others, and support of international terrorism. As for the value of human life - it's sadly clear that the UK is moving away from that. Your obsession with Israel, while tens of thousands of innocents die around the world, is sickening.
23. not peace now .. appologise for Israels existance now
zionist forever   (07.10.07)
If peace now want to make themselves usefull then go to they can place shia flags in sunni areas and sunni flags in shia areas. Organistaions like this are not about a desire they have for peace with arabs they want to appologise to the arabs for allowing Israel to win wars and survive. If the arabs won in 1967 and the road to Jeruslalem - Tel Aviv permantly had Syrian flags ( wihtout the Israeli ones ) and pictures of Assad all over the place peace now would be satisfied Israel would have appologised for existing and now this wasnt occupied Israeli land to be returned to Israel it would be rightfull Syrian land. When is somebody going to get smart rip down these Syrian flags and burn them actually have a little self respect in Israel.
24. which will go first Olmert or the Goaln
zionist forever   (07.10.07)
How has this Olmert regime survived so long if somethng isnt dnoe soon when we finnaly see tha back of this dictaitor there wont be much of an Israel left. The man has an approval rating in single figures but still he refuses to go its the sort of thing you would expect from Assad or Saddam Hussain the majority of the public dont like their leaders but the leaders say I am the boss I am not goin anywhere and I will do what the hell I like. Assad is threatening war to take the Golan by force ine day then trying to be Ghandi the next holding negotations which result in giving up the Golan at this time is not about peace as an alternative to war its surrender and hope Assad wont want a war. The way the country as its being run under this regime there has no respect and nor does it deserve any. I have alot more respect for the Assad regime than I do for the Olmert one. Next step Olmert will do a secret deal with Assad then he will either try and find a way to wriggle out of a referendum over the Golan or he will try and rig the vote to get the resul. He probably even has a deal done with Assad on when the future of the 2 kidnaped soilders ... when he and Assad are ready to sell the idea to the public Assad the peacemaker will take on the terrorists and get them released thats why there is no real attempts being made to get them back right now they are going to be held as chips to help Assad and Olmert sell their dirty deal. The homes of 30 thousand jews Billions in export which will be lost Giving Assad access to Israels allready scarse water supply in the Kineret. Strategic high ground even in modern warfare high ground still has strategic value. For decades the economy is going to be paying the price if Olmert sells the Goaln to avoid war with Syria which Israel can win and it will put Israel in a very venurable position startegicly and of course Assad will never give up his friendship with Iran so if Iran offers the right price Assad will break all his promises and Syria will be able to launch a war from the Golan. The big question now is what will Israelis be waving goodbye to first Olmert and his crooked regime or the Golan the right have alot of questions to ask themselves like why have they not been making more effort to bring down this regime bring about new ellections while there is still a country to have a government of all in the name of Olmerts nobel peace prize.
25. #22 in Efrat
English guy ,   London   (07.10.07)
You live on stolen land in the territories and sit an pontificate about the UK's "obsession" with the Middle East. How about - "get off stolen land, get out of stolen houses, give back stolen bank accounts". In short, living in Efrat makes you a professional ganef. Well done. I think that living on the skeleton's of another nation essentially gives you no right to decide what is good or bad for Damascus. Go visit the refugees who cannot return to the West Bank because you nicked it in 1967. Ugh. A whole lifestyle based on stolen property. You disgust me.
26. 25 - convenient historical and legal omissions
student ,   USA   (07.10.07)
Firstly, regarding the legality of living in Efrat: Efrat is in Gush Etzion, a small area actually granted to Israel based on the 1947 partition plan. Now, based on the international legal principle of uti posseditis (which is well precedented in disputes all over africa and south america), that means that Jordan had no right to that land pursuant to the armistice in 1948. If we want to talk about 'stolen' land, then Gush Etzion was stolen from the years 48-67. Even if you choose to ignore this, another important omission is that there was no distinct nation or national identity anywhere in the West Bank. From 1948-1967, the West Bank belonged to JORDAN. The PLO, which was founded in 1964, three years before Israeli 'occupation', made no effort to claim the West Bank as property to implement self-determination. If we assume, as you do, that Jordan had rights to all of the West Bank, your argument hits a serious obstacle when Jordan made peace asking for no land concessions in 1994 - an implicit cession of land. Additionally, since it is illegal according to the UN to build permanent structures in disputed territories (as you love to bring up in order to vilify settlers), then it should be noted that any houses in West Bank are either illegal because they were built in 1948-1967 or technically Jordanian (and if so, ceded in 1994)
27. To #21
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (07.10.07)
Aren't you ever the comedian? A Hezzie flag over that gold dome? OMG, the good ol' boys would dismantle the whole building with their bare hands and with some of those axe handles left over from Lester Maddox. As for twinning some sections of Atlanta with Yarmouk, trust me, not even the worst redneck would do that to "one of ours," although they might chip in to send a few over there on a permanent basis :-)
28. FOOLS! of course assad wants to "negotiate" Israel's capitul
dante ,   uk   (07.10.07)
one doubts that one can awaken the perfect fools of "peace now" from the dreams and delusions of their mother goose world. negotiate with assad? of course, the syrians want to negotiate Israel's capitulation. and, when the fools of peace now have given up someone else's home in the Golan (the place that syria lost in its wars of aggression, the place from which it threatened Israel and her water supply, the place syria never cared about except as a base from which to attack Israel, the place of ancient Jewish habitation) the syrians will be back with more demands. and, what will peace now say then? of course, it will be "let's negotiate." "the alternative is war."
29. #22 history of Efrat
English guy ,   London   (07.10.07)
2190 dunums of Artas village lands were expropriated in the year 1979 to build the Illegal Israeli settlement of Efrat (population 7,700 Illegal Israeli settlers) and to establish several sites for the Israeli Army. Throughout the last two decades, Artas village had lost 2583 Dunums (60+ %) of its total area (4275 dunums) to the interest of the Illegal Israeli colonial practices in the village. Feel better now about the hell-hole you live in?
30. peace Now
Shalom ,   Baltimore USA   (07.10.07)
Shalom Achshav has finally shown itself for what it is--- an agent of Syria. They should be treated as a fifth column and jailed on charges of treason. Better yet deport them to Damascus and let the demonstrate there.
