One can be an American Jew, Christian, Catholic, Buddist, Muslim, Hindu, etc. One can be an American of Polish, Russian, Chinese, Korean, Indian, Egyptian heritage or even Israeli. Being Jewish means being a part of a people, having a common culture and history..having Israel as a spiritual homeland..having common holidays, and rituals. But mainly, it's a faith....like Christianity, but we have a different bible, different values, different principles..different attitudes. Living in Israel does not make one per se Jewish. Just as living in the Vatican does not make one Catholic. Living in Egypt, does not make one a Muslim. Living in the US does not make one Protestant or Catholic or a Jehovahs Witness. I would have to agree because every Israeli I ever knew who wasn't religious, including the one I was married to, always referred to themselves as Israelis, not as Jews. In the diaspora where Jews are the minority, it is appropriate to say one is Jewish first or American first, but in Israel, which was re-established to be a Jewish nation, Judaism and Israeli nationality should go hand in hand! As a nation, the Jewish people no matter what background or political leaning should all realize that they are Jewish first!! Seeing the world through the lens of a Jew vs. the lens of a citizen of a country called the State of Israel is entirely different.

There are nearly a million Muslims living in Israel out of total population of less than seven million. Israel is the last stand. I am one quarter Jewish and I know nothing of the religion, save lighting the menorah, but if the war begins, my sword will surely be thrust. The man was saying that he is Jewish first because that is his nationality in the eyes of so many men. He was once Soviet and later Chinese, now Israeli. He will always be Jewish, and bigoted men will always hold the flame of difference to our feet.
