When my daughter was 19 and a student, she was assaulted in the park around the corner where she lived. One night, she couldn’t sleep, decided to go for a walk and ended up at the edge of this park, where she sat in a swing. While there, she saw a young man as he happened to pass under a nearby streetlight. She didn’t give him a second thought until, 5 minutes later, he grabbed her around the neck from behind, held a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her, if she didn’t do exactly as he said. Well, my daughter was a member of her school’s ROTC (Reserve Officer’s Training Corps) very athletic, not afraid of too much and very observant. She realized that his knife was not a standard type, but a carpet cutting tool; with a red handle. When he ordered her off the swing, she slammed the seat against him and, having knocked him off balance, took off running, went home and called the cops. What a disaster!!! They blamed her for the situation by being in the park at that hour; what was she doing there; did she have a fight with her boyfriend; is she trying to get attention; go home, little girl, we have important things to take care of etc. etc. In other words, they brushed her off as a dippy college kid and did nothing. Being her mother’s daughter, and getting more pissed about the fact that the cops belittled her than over having had a knife held to her throat, she decided to take things into her own hands. Not only did she get a gun, but going on the assumption that her assailant, too, must live in walking distance to the park, she kept her eyes open for him. One afternoon, sitting on the stoop of her building with a friend, she saw the guy half a block down the street, getting out of a station wagon. So, she took off, confronted him, blocked him from getting back into his car and started a big screaming ruckus which promptly collected an audience and brought the cops. When they threatened to arrest her for disturbing the peace, she challenged them to look in his car for a red-handled carpet knife. To cut a long story short, when they found it and still, mostly to shut her up, ran his license and tag, he turned out to be an escaped convict – surprise, surprise, for rape – and was wanted in two other states for the same thing. He had been hiding in plain sight in an apartment area mostly occupied by students and had, in fact, been working as an independent carpet installer for the company with the maintenance contract for the university. Since he was going back to jail for the rest of his life on the prior conviction, she did not press charges, but demanded and got a written apology from the police department and an age exception for a gun and a concealed weapon’s permit. She, still, carries a loaded gun in her purse and has the permit, and heaven help the next guy who even thinks of assaulting her. I can, however, attest to the fact that having been assaulted is something she’s never forgotten and though those and other charges are now and then manufactured, they should be checked out. If they’re false, go after the liars to the same degree as the law should go after the real perpetrators. It seems that men have no idea as to the rage in women, when they’re taken advantage of because they’re physically smaller or don’t have the political, economic or whatever clout of the man. Unfortunately and for the same reasons, most women turn the rage inward and end up blubbering idiots, if not suicidal maniacs, and that’s not the way it should be.

Or takes you seriously! They could care less. Only after you are dead do they wonder if "this could have been prevented", mostly due to the media and that is if it is a high profile case. If not, it is just another casualty of this unruly country.
