1. Completely Absurd!
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (07.12.07)
"Without the Jewish State, it would be almost impossible for Jewish Diaspora to exist." So says Mr. S. Peres. This is a complete absurd statement. The Jewish diaspora existed for 2000 years - two thousand years - without the State of Israel. It continues to exist by its own momentum and inertia independent of our pseudo-Jewish state and because we are G-d's chosen people who He will not allow to be destroyed. And this guy is going to be the President? Oy vey.
2. Peres and the JPPPI
Yeshy ,   Toronto Canada   (07.12.07)
If we think of the people as one, regardless of residence. Why not use the entire population of Jews, worldwide, to support and grow AM YISRAEL?
3. WORLD RESPECT YOU IN ONE WAY ! BUT TOO STRONG !
Atilla Liman ,   Karagözoğlu   (07.12.07)

THEY ARE NOT SURE TO RESPECT FOR COMMUNISM YOU DID BRING TO WORLD :) facısm is so called Christians job, I wont blame for that. THEY ARE SURE ABOUT BUDHA TEACHING WHICH YOU CREATED. I ALSO RESPECT FOR THAT. I LIKE THAT TEACHING SOMEDAYS. *** you never give up. I like that. BUT SOME OF YOU ARE REALY BAD GUYS ! (some of your politicians ) But most world Jews are just great. YOU WOULDNT LEARN TO GIVE GREATEST FIGHT WITHOUT HURTING CIVILIANS, KIDS !!! I SUPPORT YOUR FIGHT MOSTLY. BUT, YOU MUST LEARN TO BE PERFECT WARRIERS. DONT LET SO CALLED CHRISTIAN WORLD USE YOU IN SOME SUBJECTS. YOU DONT TRUST IN ARABIC WORLD ! YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT THAT. ARABS ARE NOT GOOD FOR EACHOTHER ALSO. THEY KILL THEIR OWN BROTHERS. YOU SHOULD NEVER ATTACK ON OTHERS RELIGIONS. TRY TO ATTACK TO THEIR PERSONALITIES. SOME PEOPLE SUPPORT YOU. THEY PUT THEIR LIFE ON IT. DESERVE IT PLASE. Love Atilla Liman Karagözoğlu
4. Peres, in his own words
Nannette ,   London   (07.12.07)
The Israeli writer Yoram Hazony wrote recently a book titled “L’Etat juif” in its French translation. (I am sure an English translation must be available). In it, he talks about the historic evolution of Zionism. When it comes to Shimon Peres, he quotes him as saying: - “Any idea of a small Nation-State - the Jewish State included - has collapsed”. - “There is no doubt that the next objective that Israel should pursue is to become a member of the Arab League”.
5. Peres? He told people to go back where they came from...
An Observer ,   Israel   (07.12.07)
This is the person who is supposed to lead an effort for the future of the Jewish people? It's bad enough he was elected president; apparently some have forgotten that when people demonstrated against him years ago, during the (ill-begotten) Oslo process, he told one woman, who escaped the Holocaust, "Go back where you came from."
6. The 21st as a Jewish Century? Not likely.
Raymond from DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (07.13.07)
It was the 20th that one author called The Jewish Century. There's certainly a case for that argument. Jews as individuals were prominent in the arts, sciences, and commerce well beyond their numbers. Their impact on Western culture was staggering. Even as a people they were a significant participant of that century's history, as subjects (Israel) and as objects (Holocaust). Contre Peres, I don't see the Jews having a comparable impact in this century. Their numbers are down to less than 0.2% of the world's population and falling, well down from pre-1939 levels. I'm more inclined to think that the three issues driving this century will be: the encounter with Islam, the rise of China, and the impact of global warming. Yes, the Jews *could* play a role in each of these areas. Israel is on the front lines of the confrontation with radical Islam, as the canary in the West's coal mine. It could provide an alternative development model to China, moving it in a more democratic direction. And Israel could be a center for advances in alternative energy, reversing desertification, clean water, green chemistry, et. al. But as Jewish educational standards fall in Israel there will be fewer who meet the challenge. Consider, for example, the state of the typical Israeli classroom, or the percentage of Israeli youngsters who go to and graduate from college against any Diaspora community. Consider the numbers who yearly go overseas for better salaries and research opportunities. One overlooked aspect of globalization is that the same drive to achieve, and to excel so prominent in Jewry's encounter with modernity is itself globalized. It is no longer just the Jews who are striving forward. Moreover, it is the fecklessness of its leadership that has turned Israel into the world's whipping boy, as one acted upon, rather than an agent of its own destiny. They are undermining its legitimacy and conceding its patrimony to a ruthless enemy for less than a bowl of pottage. So I have serious doubts about this being a "Jewish Century". There is much work to be done, and no evidence that Peres is the one with the vision to lead.
7. Something bothers me about King Peres
Steve ,   USA   (07.13.07)
B"H This leader is not elected by Jews worldwide, but by Jews living in Israel. He is Jewish, and that is a blessing. But it is not right to set him as a representative of American Jews who did not elect him. I have concerns with non-elected representatives. Call it my sense of Democracy or my sense of Freedom or my sense of Judiasm. Maybe it is intiuition. But I am basically scared that Peres will be set as the one who makes the decisions for the Jews so that the Jews lose the choice to be represented in individual nations. In other words individual nations can pretend to obsolve themselves of their responsibilities to their citizens if their citizens are Jewish, saying "Peres is their King!" That is even if Peres is not a local king at all, but a leader of a different zionist country! It hits at one core reason I am not in Israel. I see it as a different government system altogether with a different vision for freedom of religion than what I have here. I feel some real tension between the visions of the United States founding fathers and those of modern Israel, and the tension is actually religious in terms of the proper foundations of government. The concept of Shimon Peres being setup as a messianic king representing all Jews worldwide has me nervous because this is not what I had envisioned as the messianic era. I see it as a first flowering, but certainly not a full blooming, and perhaps even a step down in someways on the path.
8. Every article is written by Lapin
Asher Shlachtman ,   Miami, FL, USA   (07.13.07)
Who decided it would be a good idea to let one person write every article in a section?
9. Pan-Jewish Grouping in the dark
Boruch Hoffinger ,   Brooklyn NY   (07.13.07)
B"H First of all Israel is not a Jewish state. Next Peres will tell you that a zebra is a horse. After all they look alike. For him to say that "without the Jewish State, it would be almost impossibe for Jewish Diaspora to exist," is an interesting statement. It's totally false, however the ego doesn't deal in reality. It's an ego statement to be read thus: "The Jews in Israel and the Diaspora couldn't exist without me, Shimon Peres." G-d and arrogance are like oil and water, they don't mix very well. This whole phenomenon is not new; Jews, even in Israel, were assimilated during the Greek era. Also the holiness of the Land of Israel can increase arrogance. Chassidus teaches this: that the kelipot gets a yanika from the kedusha. So to speak: "Hey you Orthodox Jews outside of Israel, you're not holy like I am. I live hear in Israel! Not only that, Orthodox Jews in Israel, I'm in charge! In charge of the Holy Land!
