Israel is both a Jewish state and a Democracy. However, these aims do conflict and when they do a pure democracy must bend so that Israel will continue to exist as a Jewish state. 1st and foremost, the State of Israel was established in 1948 as a Jewish homeland so Jews worldwide could finally live free from oppression etc. In no way do I suggest or advocate that Israel should maintain a policy that discriminates against its citizens who are not Jews. But, Israel must advocate a policy that at a bare minimum protects the existing Jewish character of Israel. If this is not the case then in the future whether it be 5,10, or 25 years Israel will be like any other political entity despite a sizable Jewish population. I think what is forgotten here is that to be Jewish is not so much a religious designation as a cultural one. As I see it there are Reform Jews, Conservative Jews, Orthodox Jews, Revisionist Jews, Karaites, the ultra-orthodox, the non-religious, and probably some groups I've overlooked.
