Eli ,   Haifa   (07.17.07)
Living outside Israel is an anachronism which has a price.
2. What's the surprise?
Enemy of State ,   Judea   (07.17.07)
Secular Israelis feel the same way about religious ones.
3. Overdramatizing
Pablo ,   Madrid   (07.17.07)
It is unbelievable how American jews and Israeli, always tries to depict European jews as suffering from very strong antisemitism. Like it serves their own agenda, and comfort them in their own situation. Do you think in Israel, there is no racism, among jews, or arabs?Mizrahim are still regarded as low lifes even if born in Israel.
4. When You Think About It .....
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (07.17.07)
Why should Jews be loyal to countries that have a long history of anti-Semitism? Although there are Jews in Europe since before Christianity, in a sense, before Europe was Europe, we only gradually became citizens after the French revolution. Discrimination & anti-Semitism actually increased with the rise of European nationalism culminating in the establishment of fascist political parties all over Europe. We all know what that led to. But the strangest thing is that Jews became the most loyal of citizens - contributing to European civilization in every field, patriots of the countries they lived in. In other words, the opposite of the accusations of anti-Semites.
5. Money are more important to Jews...
Mohammad ,   Al Quds   (07.17.07)
more important even than what they call "Their country" Israel. Money and killing are most important for jews. Free Occupied Palestine Now
6. 2 sides on a coin
megs ,   neth   (07.17.07)
Most polish jews in the 1930ish did not speak or consider themselves Polish. This is after living there for hundreds of years.. So loyalty.....maybe some, but certainly not all of the Jews.
7. religion
megs ,   neth   (07.17.07)
Jews like to see themselves as the only victims of the religious infighting in European history. It’s like there were no Cathars, or religious wars after Luther put his pamflet on the church. The Jews chose to live in a continent where there was only one other religion, and did not want to blend in. . People look at it with hindsight and yell antisemitism. But it was a completely different world; a very religious world. But not Jewish…. And how is Israel doing now? How welcoming are they to non-Jews? Can I get married in Israel as a non-Jew for example?
8. to pablo - antisemitism in spain
shimon ,   madrid, spain   (07.17.07)
there's no exageration in saying that the old antisemitism, not fashionable anymore, is still alive in many cases under antisionism form. i don't want to tell you that critisizing israel is antisemitism, of course is not, bu there in Spain, i listen very frecuently to left wing people criticizing isral using the same old arguments that XIX century antisemitism used - the jews are rich, they controll the USA and international business. even more, i various times listened to friends of mine in the university saying that it was simply necessary to expell jews froms spain, 'cause they were few but dangerous and paralizing the economy (not a joke, intellingent people in the university telling me this bul...it, aware of my jewish condition). the spanish antisionism is sick and brutal, no difference between the new leftist one and the one practiced by Franco. Sorry to tell you that, but actually i think that the spaniards never faced truly the brutal truth about how they treated the jews throught history: if they did, i would not listen to complaints about the existence of Israel here, which is actually something i often meet.
9. White Europe is done for !
redmiike ,   tel aviv and london   (07.17.07)
If one looks at ancient Rome one can see a clear parallel ! The Romans got fat and imported slaves from Africa. The Roman women wanted less children and Rome fell. Europe imported slaves from Africa and now its women don't want children. Europe probably has 25-30 years left !

Racism is human, wherever you go. Sure there is racism in Spain, towards the jews, the moros(arabs), .... But in your experience, there is a great % of people who are antisemitic? In my experience, the big big majority, don t give a damn, about you being jewish or not, the ones who do, have some cliche views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and about the money of the jews. They are also strongly anti-american

Of course you can get married as a non Jew in Israel . If your future one is of the same faith as you are there are no problems .

With a poll conducted in 5 small and one greater country ? With a poll conducted in one fifth of European Union countries ? For those six countries this poll is certainly true , not for the whole of the continent .

moshavnik   (07.17.07)
Many of the jews living in European countries in the 1930s viewed themselves as good citizens of their host countries. Their fate was to be murdered by their neighbors. An intelligent Jew would be more loyal to Israel than to his host country.

You should feel gratefull Jews for all these centuries living in Europe did not attempt to change the fabric of the societies they lived in. Look at what Islam is doing to Europe these days , and , yes, feel sorry

21. Jews and Loyalty
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (07.17.07)
Ok, here's a little personal story. I can, of course, only speak as an American, because that’s what I am, and because it is here where I’ve gotten to know a lot of Jewish people who are as different from each other as their numbers. So, I’ll speak of Hank and his wife. Hank is quite well-off, due to a business he built from scratch. They live in a beautiful home and have a son and a daughter, both at universities. A couple of years ago, sitting around the pool, I asked Hank, if he and his wife ever thought of moving to Israel, to which Hank answered with a question for which I was not prepared: “Would you go back to Germany?” The answer was/is, of course, an unequivocal no. He said that his being born a Jew is no different to him than my having been born a German is to me, that his grandfather fought for this country, his family is in this country; that this country – not Israel, not France, not Japan, but this country - allowed him to become successful and, hopefully, will do the same for his kids, and that he isn’t budging from here for nothing and nobody and certainly not for some pie in the sky religious/secular combination idea that, from the looks of it, isn’t working any better now than it did through most of history and that the bickering and infighting now is no different than it was 2000 and 3000 years ago. When I then asked his wife, if she didn’t want to, at least, visit Israel, she said, “Oh, sure, as soon as it’s safe, but we like St. Bart’s and when the kids finish school, we may go to China.” So much for visiting Israel! When I, jokingly, made the remark that here I was, thinking that all Jews have this secret pining for Israel, Hank grumbled that Jews who want to herd everybody to Israel are like the Muslims who make martyrdom so glorious. They want everybody else to go or do it, while they stay where they are. He said that I should pay a lot more attention to what’s going on with the synagogues around here. There is new construction, expansion and renovation everywhere, and that nobody would be doing that, if they had moving to Israel anywhere in the back of their minds. I couldn’t argue with that. Hank laughingly told me to let him know when I got close to being converted and heading for Israel, so he could make me a fast offer for my business and especially before I’d get fed up over there and come back home. When his wife, all of a sudden, went into hysterics and I wanted to know why, she said that she tried to picture me on some kibbutz in the middle of the desert. I told those two that they were just really, really bad Jews. They laughed at me and said, “That may be so, but we’re good Americans.” (Hank tells me all the Jewish-Christian jokes.) The gist of the story is this: How many plain, average Jews and Gentiles have the chance or desire to have no-holds-barred conversations about how both of them feel or let loose about what they really think? Some of the Gentiles either see horns, global conspiracies or are so afraid to offend that maybe it’s best to simply steer clear of anything Jewish, while some of the Jews suspect that most Gentiles are trying to convert them or lead them down some other path of spiritual, if not physical, destruction. And so, the prejudices continue and get worse with time. It’s not only sad, but downright stupid all the way around and doesn’t do a thing for either Jew or Gentile. It only helps those who are trying to kill everybody, that is the fanatical asshats. And for those who think I’m wrong, just keep reading the talkbacks.
22. To Pablo and Shimon (Madrid) on spaniard view of jews
Daniel ,   Granada, Spain   (07.17.07)
The antisemitic feels of spaniards have changed from the fall of Franco's dictatorship. Before, the reasons for bad view of jews was the same of all european country: "They killed Jesus", "They have too much power", "They are planning a complot" and so on. These views were of extremist catholic groups. In XV century, it is very plausible antisemitism was among the majority of spaniards, but once became XIX and XX century the leftwing activists began to left and criticize antisemitism. Things of human being, the antisemitism passed from the rightwings catholic groups to the leftwing spaniard main group that is against America for its "imperialism", Israel for Palestinian "genocide", Spain rightwing for its "retrograd views", capitalism and so on. But the truth is that we can not call that antisemitism. It may be best defined as antizionism. Properly, the antisemitic feelings belongs to old people (Franco's era) and some young people filled with the prejudices of their parents. But it is clear, at least so i think, that those feelings could be practically eliminated with time and a better understanding of leftwing activists and european public in general of Middle East situation.
23. # 21
Jason, Ph.D.   (07.17.07)
Dear M. Harltey, Very revealing story. I think it is importanf for Jews who live in the European Union and other places where Anti-Semitic is on the rise to leave and go to Israel. On the other hand, the U.S. is very different. I think most people in the U.S. think the Jews have as much right to be here as anyone else. Sure, there is some Anti-Semitism. However, for the most part, America respects its Jewish citizens. Therefore, it is very easy for a Jewish American to be a loyal American.

Thank you...I always enjoy reading your talkbacks. I happen to be an American Jew with Israeli parents. I'm actually a dual citizen but I've spent my life here. Now I strongly sympathize with Israel but if I join an army, it's going to be the US army, if I become a doctor or someone important, the nation I'll be benefiting is this one. Now would I spend a few years if I were some kind of travelling doctor in Israel possibly, sure why not, but in the end I'm an American, the language I speak best is English, the movies and video games and everything I've ever watched or played were American (or Japanese ;) ). So I'll spend lots of time online defending Israel and debating about Israel, maybe even ignoring other issues, but when I'm voting (my first time will be in 2008 :) ), I take every issue into account. whatever will help THIS nation! And to those who say Israel's interests do not coincide at all with the USA's, I just disagree outright, and I got loads of facts and arguments to disprove them.
25. Lord Montague predicted this in 1917
Naftali Lavie ,   Toronto, Canada   (07.17.07)
Lord Montague, the only Jewish member of the British Cabinet at the time, wrote the following dissent to the Balfour Declaration: “…the policy of His Majesty's Government is anti-Semitic in result will prove a rallying ground for Anti-Semites in every country in the world.” “Zionism has always seemed to me to be a mischievous political creed, untenable by any patriotic citizen of the United Kingdom. If a Jewish Englishman sets his eyes on the Mount of Olives and longs for the day when he will shake British soil from his shoes and go back to agricultural pursuits in Palestine, he has always seemed to me to have acknowledged aims inconsistent with British citizenship and to have admitted that he is unfit for a share in public life in Great Britain, or to be treated as an Englishman.” “1. I assert that there is not a Jewish nation… 2. When the Jews are told that Palestine is their national home, every country will immediately desire to get rid of its Jewish citizens, and you will find a population in Palestine driving out its present inhabitants, taking all the best in the country … I claim that the lives that British Jews have led, that the aimsthat they have had before them, that the part that they haveplayed in our public life and our public institutions, have entitled them to be regarded, not as British Jews, but as Jewish Britons. I would willingly disfranchise every Zionist…. 4. …But when the Jew has a national home, surely it follows that the impetus to deprive us of the rights of British citizenship must be enormously increased. Palestine will become the world's Ghetto…” Foxman and the ADL should not be surprised, or disappointed.

Jason, Ph.D.   (07.17.07)
No, Allen. Mathematics and Decision Analysis. Now, on a more serious note: Arabs are now 20% of Israel's population. How sad and ironic it will be if we lose the Jewish state (after 2000 years of saying "Next Year in Jerusalem") because not enough Jews currently living in Anit-Semitic countries want to move there. I wonder what Moses would think about that.

C McCoy ,   Canada   (07.18.07)
Some things are simply best left unsaid. YOu see, if people don't think of such an issue, it won't come up, have no focal point. The worst conceivable thing is to give it the light of day by - gasp - holding a survey poll.
