1. After lost WWII Germany do not want Danzig to be retuned!
Detlef ,   Germany   (07.17.07)
So wy should Syria get Golan? Muslims have strange logic!
2. Jews of the Golan get ready to pack your stuff
The Golan is Syrian   (07.17.07)
If it will not happen tomorrow it will happen next year. Why postpone the inevitable?
3. To Assad
Allan ,   Ramat Ilan, Israel   (07.17.07)
Why should Israel trust Syria? Why should we give back the Golan, when we conquered it and it is ours now. If you want peace then it is up to you to say why we should beleive a dictator who funds terror. I say no giving back the golan until Syria gives the Kurds in its area freedom.. If the Arabs want to have linkage to the PA then Israel should do the same with the Kurds and see how they like it.
4. Syria don't want, can't make and won't maintain real peace.
Uzi ,   Haifa   (07.17.07)
They do want, however, to break out of their international isolation and regain the Golan without 'giving' anything tangible, least of all real peace. In this instance, 'land for peace' is both immoral and unworkable. Syria had used the Golan to threaten, pester and attack Israel before we took it in self-defence. It would be idiotic to concede anything in response to Syria's war threats. The more serious the threats the more Israel need the Golan for our security.
5. Poor Syrian regime.all these "leaders" might disappear soon!
KMR ,   Middle East   (07.17.07)
6. thank you for the blackmail, but remember...
uli ,   jerusalem   (07.17.07)
that "land for peace" is not working. Why agree to another "land FOR WAR" with you nice dictator that acts as he was a teenager.
7. Personally, I Think War Is A Better Option.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (07.17.07)
And that's the answer I would give Mr Assad. The Golan is non-negotiable. It is Israeli territory. If you really want peace, renounce your claims to the Golan. When you renounce your claim & stop threatening war if your demands are not met, that will constitute peace. Otherwise, we will make sure that the next war will cost you far more than you are willing to pay. I'm sure that there are those whose brains cease to function at the mention of the word "peace" - and they will be jumping up & down urging another give-away with nothing in return except some vague promise of "peace" but we have all seen what peace with Arabs really means & it's not much. All that will change is that we will give away a tangible asset (the Golan) for an empty promise with unenforcible terms & we will be in a worse strategic position. You can bet your life (literally) that Iranian troops will end up on the Golan.
8. to # 2 and to all
Andras Bereny ,   Kfar Tapuah, Shomron   (07.17.07)
Even if the Golan were Syrian, which is not, why would the the Jews have to pack? You want a judenreihn Syria? In the same logic, why is it "racist" to pretend an Arab-free Israel?
9. #1. No problemo. Enjoy Hamas, Hezbollah and nuclear Iran
Eternal War   (07.17.07)
10. Possession is nine tenth of the law.
Uzi ,   Haifa   (07.17.07)
Syria should come forward and spell out what they offer in return for what they want. It would be idiotic to concede anything in response to Syria's war threats. If the threats aren't serious, then why bother? The more serious the threats the more Israel need the Golan for our security. To move toward peace Syria must offer, accept and be satisfied with 'painful' territorial compromises.
11. Israel, get ready for a war of annihilation.
Nannette ,   London   (07.17.07)
12. #1 and logic
English guy ,   London   (07.17.07)
What on earth has Danzig got to do with the return of the Golan? You have fallen victim to the standard Zionist brain warping where they believe that the Middle East is actually inter-bellum Europe. As for your statement "Muslims have strange logic" - what a sad reflection upon your own mind. Assad was not speaking as "a Moslem" or on behalf of all Moslems. That generalisation is your own. He was speaking as the leader of a country - and it woudl take a very brave politician in Israel to stand up and say "the price of peace is less than the price of war". Of course, the Ziono freakos will interpret that as yet one more type of "anti-Semitism" - but then they live in their own aggressive bigoted hate-fueled world. Let's start a charity to buy suitcases to help all those sad and deluded people who set up their lives on the Golan on other people's properties. They have had their 40 year holiday and now it's time to go -either back to Brooklyn, or Moscow, or Tel Aviv. The world is now seeing that stealing land from your neighbours is no longer a tenable action. Time is ripe to give back what is not yours. Lihitraot mitnahlim posh'im.
13. Window of Peace
walldizo ,   Damas   (07.17.07)
If Israel is seriously considering peace with its neighbours, then Assad's proposition for an open negotiation is the right venue to achieve this peace.Previous attempts at reaching this goal had been hampered by American intervention which asserts different agendas, principally its Iraqi quagmire. Can Olmart grassp this opportunity??, this will remain the question of the comming weeks.
14. To Assad
unpainted   (07.17.07)
Your hostile behavior in the region comes with a prize. In you're case-you lost the Golan Heights.Stay out of neighboring countries !! Your speech isn't loaded with peaceful rhetoric.Saddam Hussein was winning the Iraqi elections with 100%, you 97%-maybe your not "loved" as much as he was!?
15. HAVE I GOT THIS RIGHT?
Elisabeth McGrath ,   Australia   (07.17.07)
I'm in the habit of localising international events to try to get the full picture. Here's how I rationalise the situation from the Southern hemisphere: Huge, big Australia attacks a little postage stamp we call Tasmania. Little Tassie not only fights back and defends itself but starts to push back the Ozzie hordes. Within 6 days, not only have the Tassies driven the invaders out of their land. They have captured parts of South Australia and Victoria. For the next 60 years, the whole world condemns the aggressor, Tasmania, and demands that it returns the land it "stole" to the poor, victimized Ozzies. Is this a fairly accurate comparison? If so - GET REAL!!!
16. To English Gusy
Mike ,   Israel   (07.17.07)
YOu acuse most when disagreeing with the muslims as "Zionist" why then you add a coment such as "lets start a charity to by suitcases to help all those sad and deluded people who set up their lives on the Gloan" in other words your saying jews leave. If its good for the Jew my English guy, then it must be good for all the arabs in Israel to leave this Jewish land. And for that matter how about all the land Stolen from Jews in all the Arab Countrys, when are these Jews going to get there land back? When that happen only then will the Golan be given back friend, whats fair is fair English Guy
17. Israel Is Led by Traitors and Fools
Jerry ,   NYC, USA   (07.17.07)
I don't see how the nation can survive the government that Israelis have elected.
18. Assad: Pre-67 Golan back or War.
Nora ,   Tel Aviv   (07.17.07)
That`s what happens when Olmert looses to 5.000 Hizbullah fighters. Assad thinks that if we coudn`t win Hizbullah we will surely not win Syria in a war. When he asks for the whole of the Golan, he emphasizes that it is only a precondition and the rest (!) he says, should be negotiated. What did you say, Olmert?
19. GIVING AWAY THE GOLAN WILL BRING PEACE... JUST LIKE GAZA
stude ham   (07.17.07)
And just like the Sudetenland back in 1938... israel is being run by a bunch of fools and idiots.
20. #12, yet more nonsense
Danny   (07.17.07)
I think you'll find that post-bellum Germany lost Danzig - it is called Gdansk now and is well inside a country called Poland - feel free to look it up on a map.... Of course, there have been lots and lots and lots of Israelis who have asked for peace - you'll find a rather obscure guy called Rabin quoted by Assad, I'm sure you may have come across him in your reading. As for "stealing" land, I think you'll find it is quite common, just that in Israel's case it acquires some mythical importance. Ah, well. Syria's oil runs out in a couple of years and Iran is set to become a net importer of oil in 2010 - it already imports 40% of petrol. Lets see how beligerent they are with no money.... Let's see how much people care about the "rights" of people with no oil.
21. # 12 and being Rustum
Ivri   (07.17.07)
Stop pretending...you are NOT english......just a clever occupier of British land.
22. Yes , We want Golan & we also want peace
Fadi ,   Syria   (07.17.07)
I hope finally chances are so high for peace again
23. Assad and the Golan
Juan ,   Spain   (07.17.07)
Such arrogance! Watch out Damascans!
24. Hatay is Turkish
Mmehmet ,   Istanbul   (07.17.07)
Our Turkish province Hatay is displayed in every Syrian map as is the Golan. However there is a Syrian embassy in Turkey and the border is open. So Israel has to show strength and Syria will then respect it. The retreat from the Gaza Strip and the Lebanon are interpreted as weakness. Israel has not yet understood the Muslim/Arab thinking.
25. In Arabspeak, conquered territory="stolen" land
(07.17.07)
26. #15 - have I got this right?
English guy ,   London   (07.17.07)
Your analogy is false. Israel was never "little Tasmania" and Syria was never big Australia. Simple differences - firstly, the white settlers in Tasmania simply killed every last indigenous inhabitant (the Tasmanian aboriginals) as part of the process of stealing their land. Actually, your analogy fails in many ways - but mainly in the fact that you have fallen a sad victim to the myth surrounding the birth of Israel. It was never purely a religious or racial problem but rather a political, land/property and economic problem. The settlers went to "little Israel" and started expropriating the indigenous inhabitants, culminating in the war of 1948 when they pushed out hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, then in 1967 when they pushed out a few more hundred thousand, plus the Lebanese incursions when they pushed out a few more hundred thousand, plus the occupation of the Golan when they pushed out some tens of thousands - all in a nice Lebensraum operation. Whatever you think about the "fairness" of hanging on to land stolen in time of war, sheer practicality would dictate to all but the densest, thickest and most dyed-in the-wool bigots that the issue of stolen land, property and refugees will not go away until a resolution is reached. To believe otherwise is simplistic wishful thinking and not a sound basis for a policy of peace.
27. Golan has always been Israel!
Keren ,   SP-Israel   (07.17.07)
And now it is Israel's more than ever, since it was REGAINED in wars ISRAEL DIDN'T WANT. Israel has always been pushed to wars ,and has lost lives in these wars. The blood of those who fought wars ,they didn't want,is not cheap. No one more inch of land should be given back. The resolution number....,doesn't matter at all, since was sponsored by western powers who don't care about peace in this area. What is correct must prevail, and the correct is that Siria LOST!
28. new country?same old same old-
yahn goodey   (07.17.07)
assad just another false prophet like olmert and peres etc. ezekiel 13:10 that continues to lead G-Ds people astray;there will be no peace until Messiah comes and destroys our enemies micah 5:13-14
29. #21 and Englishness
English guy ,   London   (07.17.07)
You have constantly stated that I am not English but "a clever occupier of British land". Would proof of my birth, to English parents who were born to English parents, who were born to people who arrived here from the Ukraine and Poland - make any difference to you? If you wish to call me an Arab - I will be proud, since racial epithets are meaningless. If you wish to believe, as you have stated time and time again that I am "NOT English" - that is really your decision. What is clear, is that you are wasting your time and my time with this extremely unclever and sophomoric name-calling. Personally I don't care what you are ("Ivri") or not, but I suspect that you were not born Ivri and that you are just pretending adn that you are really a new immigrant from some god-forsaken part of Brooklyn or Southpark Colorado. In short - would you kindly like to explain what the ethnicity of a writer has to do with the price of fish? Now, as it is a free world, with a free press, and freedom of expression, I shall write what I wish, when I wish and how I wish. Similarly, if you wish to deem me an Irishman, a Ukrainian, an Iranian or Uzbek, it simply makes no difference whatsoever. The main difference between us is that I am a liberal anti-racist who believes in equality and human rights. What does that make you?
30. 4,000 jews still live in syria
(07.17.07)
and they are NOT PERMITTED TO LEAVE AT ALL. they are kept in miserable intollerable poor conditions which decimate the community slowly. these jews are kept as prisoners, prisoners! they are housed in ghettos from which they can't leave. their health and conditions are poor and they are exposed to pogroms and torture daily, imprisonments, mob riots on their home, dhimi status, heavy taxes, unemployed and destitute. they are starving and malnurished and live in very dangerous conditions without any hope. DID ANYONE KNOW THIS? DID ANYONE REALIZE WHAT IT MUST BE FOR THESE PEOPLE TO NOT HAVE RIGHTS AND LIVE AS JEWS IN A HATEFUL COUNTRY? release the 4,000 jews to israel and maybe we can start talking, assad. give us back our jews now!
