1. i agree with that
toli ,   israel   (07.18.07)
in my opinion it is very dangerous for religous single gays to serve in the army. i was in the army and i had a lot of hard experiences. modesty problems. the torah is a torah chim. that the goal is to guidance us in every moment. we dont need to search after experiences. we have to be carful/ and definitely,i think that army is a obligation to every one.
2. Revisiting The Tal law
Adina Kutnicki ,   US   (07.18.07)
I am all for Torah study, especially in Israel. However, delaying service until 22, and allowing some not to serve at all is disgraceful. The hesder program combines the best of both worlds - Torah study and army service. At the same time there are hundreds of thousands of secular left draft dodgers, including Olmert's children. While the Tal Law must be revisited, their should be enacted a new law meant to chase down those who evade service from the secular left. By the way, the Tal Law is payback to Shas MK's and UTJ for staying in the gov't. It is pure political backscratching, and has nothing to do with the regime wanting to empower Torah study. The regime is totally anti religious, but has to swallow their hostility to stay in power.
3. #1 Religious Single GAYS??
Please tell me ,   That was a typo   (07.18.07)
4. Why did govt vote overwhelmingly for this law?
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (07.18.07)
Ben Gurion's big mistake was in thinking the haredi population would eventually become extinct, therefore he was willing to marginalize a very small population (at the time, 400 full time Torah scholars) in hope that this number would dwindle. As the religious population increases (ken yirbu) their obligation to defend the Holy Land becomes more urgent. Not everyone is suited to be an avrech. Serving in the IDF is also a mitzvah.
5. The IDF must look at itself first
C McCoy ,   Canada   (07.18.07)
The last time Canada had a draft - they called in conscription - was from 1943 to 1945. Any who were taken in on this were harrassed quite a lot, not just by the Army, but by volunteers. So,is the IDF so totally innocent of any harrassment of Haredim? Even if they are, do they convey this message accurately to the Sgt's? Yes or no? If the answer is no, it's no surprise that this issue festers.
6. Unbalanced Article - No reason given why so many supported
Lemmings Hotline ,   sd usa   (07.18.07)
For all the Chareidi bashing that goes on as to how unfair it is that they dont serve, here is proof that a majority of the Knesset supports this policy. So dont go and HATE the religious for not serving. Your govt agreed to it. And dont tell me its discriminatory this law is. Any one who wants to defer military service may do so under the law by sitting and learning Torah the way his great grandfather used to .
7. #1 A religious single gay is an OXY-MORON or just a moron!
Yeisha ,   Israel   (07.18.07)
8. well it says postpone
jack bauer ,   usa   (07.18.07)
so at least thats better then a total pardon I think it should be stricter though There is no reason the haredi couldnt have there own division. They could be the front lines shock force....lol and they could be called the "black hat" division
9. A catastrophe
sk ,   USA   (07.19.07)
Not only for the standard reasons but also because the Haredim are far from patriotic in current system, and this must change. Perhaps it would if they had to fight. Anyway, they're always rioting. This should be nothing that unusual for them.
