31. Protesting is wrong but assaulting Bretslavers OK?
Ilan ,   Ariel   (07.23.07)
Funny how things get the spin. A group of secular people physically assault religious Jews to prevent them from moving into a community in Haifa. That is a "conflict" and somehow worthy of approval. A non-violent rally however is seen as dangerous and wrong. Is this hypocrisy or just raw prejudice.
32. HAreidim? protest
Z. Wolf ,   NYC, USA   (07.23.07)
Your headline "Hareidim Protest Sale of Pork" was misleading. By the evidence of your photos as well as the contents of your article, it's evident that the protesters were traditional and mizrachi dati, not Hareidim. Your attempt to evoke visceral anti-Hareidi reaction calls for an apology to your readership.
33. Democracy????
avi ,   ny   (07.23.07)
democracy means majority rule. If the majority wants pork they get it. If the majority does not they don't get it.By definition it does not mean that those in the minority are free to eat it. Its time for dibs to read a dictionary.
34. Most in the photo don't look chareidi to me
David ,   Los Angeles   (07.23.07)
A few Shas-niks and that's it.
35. Chaim , no everyone wants tora law .
charles ,   petach tikva   (07.23.07)
if you want to live as the tora orders you , no problem . There are other people who do'nt want separate buses or shopping hours . Do'nt forget that it were mostly secular , if not anti religious , who gave heir blood for this country in 1948 .
36. Ilan , it's protecting your neighborhood
charles ,   petach tikva   (07.23.07)
First they take this synagogue , then buy or rent flats , and then dictate their way of life to everyone . Look what happens in Beth Shemesh , or go to make a walk in Mea Shearim .
37. #2 This IS Democracy
Aharon   (07.23.07)
I'm not religious, and most people who read my talkbacks know exactly how I feel about how the Haredim behave in this country. However, how can you be so blind as to ask "where is democracy?" when you see this article? THIS IS DEMOCRACY IN ACTION!
38. Aharon
charles ,   petach tikva   (07.23.07)
Democracy is not exerced in the streets , it's in the polling stations , and then at the Knesseth .
39. biased title & not supported by facts in the pictures
Jerry ,   Baltimore/ Tel Aviv   (07.23.07)
Saying that it's the Haredim demonstrating against the phenomenon marginalizes the problem and shows it as a narrow sectarian approach. The Ynet's picture depicts mostly religious Zionists or traditional Jews. As a non-Orthodox Jew, I would be standing there as well; but I would not come if it would be perceived as the Haredi demonstration only. C'mon , Ynet!
40. charles (38), I can't agree this time.
sk ,   USA   (07.23.07)
Democracy is indeed exercised in the streets, as well as in the polling stations and the Knesset. Protest activity is central to the democratic concept. These Jews (whether or not they are Haredim) have every right to protest. HOWEVER, secular Jews have every right to protest in the Meah Shearim. And I recommend that they do, by walking through in a large group, with clubs if necessary for protection, with women immodestly attired.
41. sk , Street protests
charles ,   petach tikva   (07.23.07)
You can not protest violently . In this case , what if the protesters do'nt let people make their shopping ? What if people are effraid to come there ? OK , for protests in the street , but only if allowed by the police . Try to make a walk in Mea Shearim as you propose ! you will see what happens . They take the right to protest . But do'nt dare to do it against them [ Haifa ! ]
42. GET A LIFE!!!!!! or better still, a job!
israel   (07.24.07)
It's my right as a citizen to eat pork - and if it's banned, I will bring it from another country. THE PORK STAYS! the dirty religious don't have to eat it.
43. response to charles, FOR THE THIRD TIME
sk ,   USA   (07.25.07)
Dear Sublime Censor, would you please stop deleting versions of this TB? charles is saying that one can't treat the Haredim the way the Haredim treat the seculars. My point is that yes, one can. I am saying that a threat of violence cannot be catered to, and that those who visit the MS should expect violence and come prepared. I am not suggesting that one should go out and break heads. I do not understand what your problem is. Is it possible for an Israeli to think outside the box for just a moment, or must y'all be robots? Clearly, the status quo isn't working, now is it? --- Look, charles, one can't insist on free speech and assembly for gays and then deny the same for people in clown suits. There were no reports of violence in this news story. One cannot deny people such rights because others would feel uncomfortable or even intimidated. Nor should the police have a veto over small demonstrations. (I assume you wouldn't want them to be able to veto "settler" protests?) I think, though, my Mea Seharim idea is excellent. If the Haredim want to start a riot, they should be met with force, just as they choose to meet you with force. If you need to get 1000 seculars with good IDF training to provide protection for the "marchers," why not do so? The reason the Haredim are so violent and pushy is because when they start something they are not met with the same that they dish out. The reason they go out of their shtetls and cause trouble is because they think they can get away with it, and they think that their miserable quarters are safe from reciprocity. It's time seculars take some responsibility for the kind of Haredim they have co-created: barbarous, freeloading, ignorant, and violent. Maybe I just don't understand Israel. But this all seems pretty obvious to me.
44. ynet please change the title for honesty
jack ,   usa   (07.26.07)
the same way arabs are semites but evrey one knows what antisemite means - anti jew, that way when you write charedim people take it as if the you talking of the balck hat's jews. so be honest and change the title
45. a silly excuse
(07.28.07)
<<...Pork is a SYMBOL representing anti-Judaism – a symbol that Jews were ready to die for...>> Do not force everyone follow your s y m b o l s, which are in fact only in your own mind.
46. HAREDIM ?
Eliot Vernet ,   Montreal, Quebec   (08.05.07)
You say that Haredim or Ultra-Orthodox Jews demonstrated against the pork selling shop. However, the picture you run shows regular religious or traditional Jews. Be consistent please.
