I have always thought that the perfect illustration of maybe the most difficult mitzva "Haavat Israel" was given by the Israeli soldiers. We had the recounts of real stories that took place on the battle field that even the most creative movie producer in Hollywood would note have dared to implement. When I was a civilian volunter in Tsahal in 1982, I remember to have read the story of Marcus Hoestchein, an US-Born israeli soldier that had been wounded in a roadside bombing in South Lebanon along with his Commander. Despite his wounds, he asked the medics to first take care of his officer.He then lost conscience, was taken to the hospital and unfortunately passed away. Also Omer Akabets was the radio guy of Golani general Erez Gerstein that dyed in a roadside bombing in South Lebanon. Omer had been picked up by Gerstein because he had heard of a seriously wounded soldier that was more than eager to return to combat. TImes are changing but not so much, the are still plenty of wonderful fighters willing to sacrifice their life. I recently talked to an Israeli in Miami that told me that he only did one year in Tsahal in a ship warehouse and dropped it. I told him that at the time of the Warsaw ghetto, when 5 years old jewish kids were eaten alive by German shepherd dogs, anyone in the Ghetto would have been more than happy to serve as a "jobnick". Hanan Greenberg is just reporting the facts. Just chek out the Jerusalem Post web site. The news are identical. They also state that the soldier was scared. You may not like what went on here, but that is no reason to blame the reporter.
