31. He is right - close Dimona and build a new one!
Rupert ,   Jerusalem   (08.01.07)
32. Looked at a geological map lately?
David ,   Israel   (08.01.07)
Japan, high intensity earthquake zone. Israel, not so much. We don't have anything that even approaches the earthquake levels of Japan, or that would threaten our reactor. I know it and I'm not a geologist - why don't you? I mean, after all, your a big enough expert to write an opinion piece on it, right?
33. #1, #2, #4: He wrote about reactor, not about weapons
Tobias   (08.01.07)
He wrote about closing the reactor, not about dismantling the nuke bombs. Closing the reactor won't reduce Israel's deterrence or military power. After more than 40 years, Dimona should have produced enough bombs - even 20 years ago it was already estimated that Israel had 200 bombs. And concerning the number of nukes, the term 'balance of power' is nonsense. If you can't scare Ahmadinejad with 200 bombs, you also can't do it with 300 or 500 or 5000. And if Israel really, really thinks they need to produce more nukes, than they better build a new reactor - with modern technology, safer, preferable some dozens meter below the ground to protect it better from terrorism and rocket / missile attacks. Which also would allow to build it some hundret or thousand meters away from the overground access facilities, cooling tower, etc, to hide the exact location.
34. #4, #10, #20: nuclear armed submarines
Tobias ,   Germany   (08.01.07)
Almost 10 years ago, Israel got 3 new submarines from Germany (the so-called 'Dolphin class' subs). They are diesel-electric powered subs (using batteries for under-water cruise), and (as far as I know) are not capable to carry nuclear arms. In a few years (2010 and 2012) Israel will get another two submarines from Germany, which will drive underwater by hidrogen power, using fuel-cell technology. Together with some modern electronic devices, and the israeli-developed high-tech equipment which Israel will add after receiving the subs, will make them some of the most modern, and best, submarines of the world. Israel specifically requested that some of their torpedo launchers should be build bigger, in a size which is too large for all known torpedos in use, but would fit for a certain class of cruise missiles, which also could be equipped with nuke warheads. There was a lengthy discussion among German politicians whether the delivery of these submarines with these launchers can be permitted (and even financially subsidizede - Germany pays 1/3, Israel pays 2/3), or whether selling them would violate the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. So maybe Israel will have submarines with nuclear-missile-launching capabilities in a few years...

wat nonsens!

clockwerk ,   sg   (08.03.07)
if ur not a geologist, den dun try act like one. can u predict earthquakes? neither do any geologist can be 99% correct in predicting earthquakes. well anyways david, since ur FROM israel, hope if any earthquakes happens there and this piece of news becomes true, u dun need to blame terrorists or hezbollah or hamas. or can u?
37. Just because he's arab doesn't mean he's wrong
daniel ,   amsterdam   (08.03.07)
Perhaps his motives aren't kosher, after all he's from Hadash. But he makes valid points, which should be taken into consideration.
38. Its disinfo you idiots!
dave ,   manchester   (08.03.07)
So they have justification for building a new and bigger one somewhere else, isn't that obvious?????
39. The writer is a pansy
Homey Jay ,   Springfield, America   (08.03.07)
I'll bet the writer is one of those treehugging pansys who wants to close down the plant so that Holocaust survivors can get the money. Of course, they're so old that only their grandchildren will have any use for the cash and even then they'll be spending it on flashlight batteries. On the other hand, I've read nothing but glowing reviews from F-A-C-T-U-A-L writers on the nuclear industry overall.
40.  No Nukes is Good Nukes 2
Taras ,   Lviv, Ukraine   (08.04.07)
Indeed. Why all the political verbage? We're talking about nuclear power. It's expensive. It isn't safe. It has never been safe. It will never be safe. Remember Chernobyl? . R&D other energy sources. Why are we still stagnating over nuclear energy? If you want weapons, R&D weapons with less colateral damage. Israel has some outstanding scientists - fund them.
41. when nukes get out of hand
Dan ,   USA   (08.04.07)
what you do on to others it shall be done onto you! There is a true and just GOD who will soon say enough is enough! Where then will you be!!! Where then will the world be!!! Wake up before it is to late!
