1. they need to be fed and clothed and then found another
(07.31.07)
solution. Israel does'nt have the room or funds to support them. I feel terrible for them, but this should'nt become Israel's problem. Best of luck to the refugees!
2. airlift them to Northern Kenya
peter mochama ,   nairobi, kenya   (07.31.07)
i made this suggestion to the israeli embassy here in kenya and to the ministry of foreign affairs in Israel that Israel should consider requesting Kenya allow the transfer of the refugees to the UN adminstered refugee camps in Northen Kenya. israel can then either enhance its contribution to the UNHCR or contribute directly to the kenyan government some form of aid to cater for the refugees. this is the best option otherwise i wonder whether there is enough space for more refugees in israel. israel is too small.
3. refugees
ezekial   (07.31.07)
Israel should be the refugee stronghold of the world protected by jewish defence and vital services armies . The overpopulated phillipines must arrive as the poor mass in asia and south america .Israel must take the poor and huddled masses be the ellis islands sanctuary of the universe .
4. they pass the philadelphi route? are your sure Ms. President
uli ,   jerusalem   (07.31.07)
Just a proof that Ms. President has no idea about security. Telling us the africans cross through philadelphi route. I believe they don't want to Gaza and won't be welcomed there! They want to come to Israel for the money and only a part of them are Sudanese refugees. They just take a right on the Israeli feelings to get a better easier life. We can't solve the problems of Africa in taking tens of millions of africans that are looking for a better life. most of them are also muslims, which would destroy the jewish state completely. Yes, we eant to hlep! But also: YES, we want to live and live in our Jewish homelands as a majority. Stop the infiltration!! Build a hermetic fence!
5. My country should'nt a sudanese's asylum
t.i ,   Israel   (07.31.07)
this is the liability of the international community not ours, the europeans looking for workers, why should they don't take the sudanese refugees?, Israel is jewish country, we don't want an emigration of non-jews into our territories, our country is tiny already. where is the relief department of the un?, if the victims were not blacks, the un would probably exert differently, the hypocrisy is unbelievable!, the internatiol community run away and preach us about morality, what shame!
6. Americans & Saudi
ben ,   singapore   (07.31.07)
They can send these refugees to Kenya. Open camps there may be a resque shelter in Israel will be good enough but not permenant settlement UNLESS they are JEWS ! Arrest an charge those who smuggle. Those idiots who take money from these running away refugess must be punished for taking advantage of these poor people anaweh's of the Lrd ! Arab Saudi should pay for all these cost incurred by Israel. UN refugee crisis dept is SLEEPING I suppose. It is clear despite all that character assassination by the World Media and Human Rights Group against Israel..the refugees still fing Israel as a place of choice to seek asylum. For one reson- Israel is the oly democratic nation in the middle east. All the Arab Nations have failed badly to the point that the rich and famous cant defend the political and social interest of these refugees. It is a SHAME! Israel open your doors ONLY for immediate rescue and / or temporary shelter sunject to resettlement to Kenya or any part of Africa. It is high time the International Community interfere with this out flow of Refugees.
7. Your husband ruined our country
Doris   (07.31.07)
LAst year he sent our young men out to die when he could have used air raids. Two years ago he left thousands of Jews homeless and jobless He is corrupt and void of any morals. You, Aliza protest the very existance of our army and sent your kids away so they won't have to serve. HOW DARE YOU PREACH ETHICS??
8. Don't be tempted . . .
(07.31.07)
to romanticize this very real problem Israel is facing. 3 million refugees is not a laughing matter. Food, shelter, jobs, education . . . . when Israel is struggling to care for her own citizens and facing wars on all fronts. Once the infrastructure fails these refugees, they will turn to crime to survive and by then it will be too late.
9. WE DO HAVE ROOM!!!!!!
gedaliah ,   gush etzion   (07.31.07)
These people are experiencing their own holocaust. You people who say there is no room, that is what the US said in WWII, England, and other allied countries. we were sent back to be slaughtered. We should be a light apon the nations. We have months before the winter comes to contruct camps for these people. We should raise money from the UN and not be responsible for the finances. This is our duty as Jews!!! Why? Because we need to be an example to the world and show how people are to be treated. shame on you all who claim "no room"
10. Where is the Leftists' compassion
Howard ,   NYC   (07.31.07)
for the suffering of the Jews in Israel? For the homeless, the mentally ill, the Jews expelled from their homes and who found themselves living for months in small tents? Where was the Left's compassion then?
11. Give shelter to all world refugees who come to Israel.
Benet ,   UK   (07.31.07)
And to all of those seeking better lives. Why not share your wealth, Israel? You were created as a refuge, remember? Numbers don't matter when people are suffering and in need. If you opened your doors wide, the world would be amazed at how compassionate Israelis are. The international press would soften its attacks on the country. The UN would stop focusing on Israel so much. The Arab world would reduce its rhetoric against the Jewish state. It would be such an act of selflessness on the part of Israel, its doors open to the suffering masses of the world. It would be an example for all other countries. And we have heard of the incredible suffering of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, in Iraq, and in the territories as well. It's inconceivable that Israel can turn its back on those human beings and not let them be part of Israel. Think of the children. I am sure that the current Arab and world attitude against Jews and Israel would be a thing of the past if Israel would only demonstrate by this generous act that it cares about the Arabs too. Mrs. Olmert, I admire you so much. You are doing such an admirable job. Israelis must be so proud of you. Carry on with your good work.
12. Aliza: go home and tell your husband....
(07.31.07)
its time to resign and take his corrupt feckless government from power. You can travel, write, take pictures all you want, as if you were Eleanor Roosevelt. But you and your husband are a big part of the problem in this country.
13. Aliza Olmert? Sense of urgency????
Susie ,   Jerusalem   (07.31.07)
Has the woman ever bothered to look at or see the Jewish refugees from Katif in their carboard (red roofed) boxes, with their lack of employment, their health and social and economic problems, their distress? Or are her eyes only for non-Jewish, international suffering? If she wants to find solutions for urgent human problems, charity begins at home.
14. Another Disaster Brought To Us By The Religion of Peace.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (07.31.07)
This particular humanitarian disaster was created by the Islamic gov't of Sudan. So, add it to the list along with Somalia, Afghanistan, & Iraq. And there will be more to come. The Muslim world is failing & that failure is translating into the chaos, violence, poverty, & religious fanaticism which is the impetus for creating more & more refugees. And by some strange irony, the moral burden (& financial) falls on the developed Western nations. The Islamic nations escape all responsibility for their self-inflicted disasters.
15. Send them to Vatican City
MARK ,   USA   (07.31.07)
Let Pope Benedict help the less fortunate. Let him practice what he preaches.
16. Convert or Face a Mass Deport
MARK ,   USA   (07.31.07)
Have them convert.
17. Very Nice Aliza...Too bad you have no mercy for Jews!!!
Malcolm   (07.31.07)
If only you had this much interest in the Jews who were evicted from Gaza. If only your sons were part of the state and members of the IDF guarding the border. . If only you really cared! Oooops...Forgot...You are wife of the Spinmaster General. Urrrr...Nice article. Way to Go!
18. reffos
peter ,   amsterdam, NL   (07.31.07)
Moshe the driver is right of course and Aliza Olmert should worry more about contributing to Israël instead of sending her kids to the US and demanding all sorts of measures for economic refugees.
19. Sudanese refuges
Charlene Marcus ,   Chicago,Usa   (07.31.07)
I have been to Israel in o6 and 07. I have seen how the Israeli's live. There is a great deal of poverty. Israel cannot afford to care for its own people. There is no way that this tiny country( the size of New Jersey)can take on the burdon of caring for a new group of people.
21. #11..Benet
Nemesis   (07.31.07)
Benet, you live somewhere in the UK. It's very easy for you to say let them all in,but I don't see the UK volunteering to let anyone in. Israel is a small country, and the article states that there may be as many as 3 million waiting to cross over. I could be wrong, but I think the population of Israel is around 8 million, which means Israel would be increasing its population almost by half..and they're "MUSLIMS". Why would Israel want another 3 million Muslim welfare cases on their hands, that will probably turn on them as soon as their kids get old enough to strap a suicide belt on? How can anyone,in this day and age,be so incredibly naive?????????
22. How is this for compassion ...
Gary ,   N. Jersey   (07.31.07)
The Finance Ministry is seeking to cancel plans to subsidize the electricity bill of some 200,000 elderly, many of whom Holocaust survivors. http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3431081,00.html Talk to your husband, Mrs. Olmert.
23. A Perfect Opportunity
Ross ,   New York   (07.31.07)
This is a perfect opportunity for Israel to show the world that it is not the "fascist," "aparthied" state it is vilified as by leftists around the world. As long as these Sudanese refugees pledge to be loyal citizens of the state of Israel they should be granted citizenship or be allowed to stay as long as they need be. Israel was created as a safe haven for the Jews of the world and there is no reason why it can't be a safe haven for all oppressed people all over the world.
24. at our peril
Dan Stern ,   Tel Aviv   (07.31.07)
give 1000 refuge and we will be flooded, it is already happening - word has already got back to Cairo that Israel is a pushover and will take in anyone Very sad about the refugees, but Israel simply can't take in every refugee from anywhere in the world (apart from the fact that most of these people are either not from Sudan, and those that are have been living in Egypt for many years and are 99% coming to Israel for better economic conditions, even Aliza Olmert admits this here).
25. makes sense
JL ,   israel   (07.31.07)
53000 homless people in israel but she is mostly occupied with other peoples problems...just having to hear about this f***ing family of olmerts is like rubbing salt in our wounds
26. Honesty, Justice, Peace and Noah's wife
Atilla Karagözoğlu   (07.31.07)
They say ; world can olny survive on three columns. 1. Honesty 2. Justice 3. Peace *** Have you heard about Prophet Noah's wife story ? she was with bad ones. She stayed with bad ones.... *** Its nice to see and read from Mrs. Olmert. This is the first time I see her picture and read her article. *** I have two questions for Mrs. Olmert ! 1. Do you believe in Honesty, Justice and Peace ? 2. Do you believe IF TODAYS ISRAEL WILL ABLE TO SURVIVE LONG TIME (more than 600 years ) ? Thanks with respect Atilla Karagözoğlu
27. to 9! An example for the nations of self desturction? why?
uli ,   jerusalem   (07.31.07)
Yes, the US said there was no room and everybody who had some geography lessons knows that this was not true, BUT HOW CAN YOU COMPARE THE HUGE LAND MASSES OF THE US TO OUR TINY COUNTRY???? really can't believing you don't notice what you are saying there
28. to 11 you are making fun of yourself
uli ,   jerusalem   (07.31.07)
and if you would do all this and even more, they still would want to destroy us, because there problem is not about land or wealth, their issue is a Jewish state in "muslim lands". Muslims can't stand another religion ruling itself and over muslims in the long run. you are dreaming and britain is already standing in line for sharia takeover
29. Some friends....and then Aliza
Nora ,   Tel Aviv   (07.31.07)
Mr.Olmert, that`s all you have now. Some friends that owe you their present situations and then...your wife,a super leftistwife so different from you, But the wind, the political wind is blowing harder and harsher....blowing you towards a tunnel, a dark tunnel of investigations, where no wife and no friends and are admitted.
30. #9 Gedaliah
Canadian Otter   (07.31.07)
You write: "This is our duty as Jews!!! Why? Because we need to be an example to the world and show how people are to be treated." Why exactly do you need to be an example to the world? Why Israel? Israel has already been an example to the world. And the Jewish people have been an example for thousands of years. Their huge contributions are out of proportion to their tiny numbers. The rest of the world needs to prove itself, Gedaliah. Why not the countries that have benefited from colonialism? Why not the countries that were guilty or complicit of the Holocaust? Why not the countries that have given weapons (US included) to the enemies of Israel, a tiny country besieged by wealthy, powerful and non-democratic countries? Why not the countries that are constantly bleating at the UN against Israel's record on human rights? What about theirs? Isn't this the time for them to show a little compassion? As far as Israel is concerned, it would be much better to show its compassion for its own. There are still many expellees living in substandard housing. And judging by the way the present government is conducting itself, there might be many more expellees that you will have to find room for within a shrunken Israel.
