1. Holocaust Survivors new budget
Eve Walg ,   Raanana- Israel   (08.01.07)
Whose bright idea was to increase the budget in the next few years. ? Why not let the survivors enjoy the biggest portion while they are still alive?
2. Survivors
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (08.01.07)
I think, Ms. Tatarko is correct with her observation that someone is waiting for a "biological" solution. Also, as I wondered before, why allocate more money for less and less people?? Is it meant to just look good in hopes of not having to pay it? And yes, $19 per month is an insult.
3. you're lucky you get anything - shut up and deal with it
andrew ,   miami,fl   (08.01.07)
4. Olmert
ben ,   singapore   (08.01.07)
if you cant continue the Moshe's action of liberating these holocaust survivors, it is a shame ! Let them eat well or you live with NIS 83 ($19).Dont humiliate the poor.Olmert dont humiliate the poor of the Lrd G-d of Yisrael.
5. Holocaust Survivors
Survivor supporter ,   Israel   (08.01.07)
Olmert's pathetic and ignorant attempt at trying to pacify survivors by offering them a pittance defies all imagination. This person who calls himself Prime Minister is a braggart, egoist and every minute that he is in office is one minute too much. The non-Jews do know how to treat these unfortunate human being. Boos to the government and banks who callously hold on to money that does not belong to them.
7. The Holocaust Survivors are our Responsibility.
Esther ,   Ofarim, Israel   (08.01.07)
We need to take care of them. Nothing less will do. Olmert, for shame.
8. how clever!
ami ,   israel   (08.01.07)
olmert and his gang decide in 2010 you will get more money he is sure that at that time there wont be any survivors so he and his helpers will raise their salaries.
9. reply to andrew
STANLEY ,   telaviv   (08.01.07)
how can you talk like that,i dislike people who do not live in israel and think they can tell us how to live over here.
10. Even more true in the wider societal context
Eran ,   Boston   (08.01.07)
Many of these people worked their whole lives and served the nation. Their income taxes funded the studies and privileged (non-working) lives of countless able-bodied and healthy Orthodox. You can only divide the pie into so many pieces: Israel’s economy will collapse if huge sectors of society are given a free ride. The needy should be helped, and those that choose Torah over work should not expect others to write them a blank check. They should look themselves in the mirror with shame that the “Jewish” nation allows such suffering on the part of aged survivors of the worst human war crimes, while these young yeshiva students can - but CHOOSE NOT TO - make a contribution to the survivors’ dignity.
11. Survivors in Need
mr ,   Israel   (08.01.07)
Those truly in need should be given an add. amount to help them live out their lives in a worry-free manner. Social workers can attest to those who are in difficulties and Bituach Leumi can make the grants accordingly. Mr. Olmert stop insulting our intelligence - spreading the total amount to be allotted over a period of 4 years is ridiculous if not ludicrous. A pensioner who knows how much it takes to get by ( not a holocaust survivor - just a survivor)
12. Measure of it
C McCoy ,   Canada   (08.01.07)
The truest measure of a country would be how it treats those among its population who are largely powerless. Not wishing to criticize Israel, I would merely state Canada is guilty of this sort of thing too.
13. #3 go to hell you ass----.
holocaust survivor   (08.01.07)
14. Where to get the money
Ned ,   Bet Shemesh Israel   (08.01.07)
Let's pay all the 120 Knesset members 83 shekels a months and up the stipend for the Holocaust survivors from the remaining funds. It will make us all feel better.
15. Holocaust surviver.
bachrach Andres ,   Kfarsaba il.   (08.02.07)
Not the israel government.gives us money, but the germans. The germans send us the survivers the rent money in euro. The Israel government gives us the monay in shekel, from the beginning on the same value how much the shekel was before tenths of years.I got monthly 3620.03 shekel.from that sume they deduct 1623.00 shekel what I should get from the Bituach leumi. Why? Andi mihakfar
16. They deserve more
Quasimodo ,   Germany   (08.02.07)
The situation of the Holocaust survivors is a huge issue in the German media. I read lots of articles about it lately, most of them quoting Gal Rotem, a representative of the Holocaust survivor’s fund in Israel, talking about what happened to the German reparation payments. According to the German Ministry of Finance Germany paid overall 63 Billion (63 thousand million) Euros (or 86 Billion US Dollar) reparations to victims of the Nazi regime. The state of Israel received 40 percent of that sum, approximately 25 Billion Euros. The rest went directly to Holocaust survivors in other countries all over the world. In addition to that Germany is granting economical and military aid to Israel. I know there is no way to buy Germany off its guilt. However, the least thing that could be done is to guarantee a live in dignity without hunger and fear of loosing one’s livelihood to the survivors. Why doesn't your government forward at least a part of this enormous sum to the poor Holocaust survivors? They deserve it since they survived the sickest crime ever committed in history of mankind. Moreover, they are the generation that built Israel and fought for its survival.
17. survivors starving
ted ,   dallas, tx   (08.07.07)
It is a disgrace that these who were starved by their enemies should be starved by their own government. That is what happens when we look to government to solve social problems, though.
