31. I actually found the custom not very Jewish
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (08.06.07)
More like Catholics kissing the statutes of saints in their churches.
32. Mezuza Kissing
Shmuel ,   Tel Aviv   (08.06.07)
Finally an enlightened rabbi who can distinguish between faith Law and superstition. Kol HaKavod to Rabbi Roth and his Masorti Movement. Shmu
33. kissing a box on the door...
Michael ,   Haifa   (08.06.07)
...sounds like some sort of a rare sexual perversion
34. What Rabbi?
S Judah ,   london   (08.06.07)
35. Similiar issue--Christian Orthodoxy
Kara Tyson ,   Mobile, AL   (08.06.07)
Every year at Greekfest, our Priest gives a talk to visitors who express concern/ distaste that we receive communion from a common cup. Orthodox Christians use the same cup--Roman Catholics actually wipe the cup between people. His answer: if you believe that something Holy will make you ill...you dont need to be receiving anyway. Same issue here. If this Rabbi believes that a Mezuzot will make him ill (something that is Holy), perhaps he should not have one at all.
36. # 26 and #18
BUSH ,   USA   (08.06.07)
please try to leave Christianity from the Jewish articles. By the way M Hartley your question is an old question before Yeshu was born just like the answers were there since the world was created. G-d is speaking to his Courthouse of Angels. There were angels also created during the 6 days just like animals and humans. Although G-d has the power to do anything he wants to without permission whether it is making man or punishing man. G-d is still humble and speaks through a court. As a result G-d also looks more loving when punishing then not. If that is to hard to decipher then try to understand it as a king or even president who don't create laws without speaking through their congress.
37. Good..it's dirty, disgusting and primitive
Danielle ,   centre   (08.06.07)
38. Conservative Toilets
Isaac Balbin ,   Melbourne, Australia   (08.06.07)
Make sure you don't touch the door handle on the way out. They are infested with the same germs as conservative mezuza covers.
39. I hear they make a great antibacterial mezuzah scrub
leah Ominsky ,   netanya   (08.06.07)
only kidding....very interesting perspective.
40. Bush , god's love = shoa victims
charles ,   petach tikva   (08.06.07)
as a result god looks more loving when punishing then not , you wrote . We have seen this love , ask the Shoa victims
41. # 3 is right, indeed cellphones aswell..

42. I did Charles
BUSH ,   USA   (08.06.07)
Only the survivors can truly point out Hashems love for His children
43. a good laugh
ecr   (08.06.07)
I haven't had such a good laugh in along time. Only in America would the people be worried over something like germs on a mezuzah cover. Get over it!
44. What's the big deal here?
Esther ,   Ofarim, Israel   (08.07.07)
One Rabbi was approached by a bunch of Yentas concerned of getting the sniffles. So - he told them they don't need to kiss the Mezuza. He didn't issue an edict, he dealt with a question brought up by members of his congregation. His reasoning behind the advice given is sound and wasn't a dictate given to the Jewish Community as a whole. End of subject.
45. To # 26 and #36
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (08.07.07)
#26 Will you have your new creation myth copyrighted or can anyone copy and quote it? Do I understand correctly that god now runs the show by committee? That would explain why things are so screwed up. On the other hand aside from Exodus 33:20 There shall no man see me, and live. he occasionally takes the direct approach. Well, at least, that's what it says. I'm sure I could find a few more instances, but this should do it. Btw, it's always refreshing to "meet" people who know what god thinks and how, why and who will go to heaven. #26 Maybe you shouldn't refer to any of my tb's, anymore, at all. Whatever you have might be catching by osmosis. #36 I, honestly and for what it's worth, don't give a hoot about Christianity any more than I do about any other religion. I just wish that all of them could keep their stories straight between one chapter and the other. All these contradictions don't look so good. Genesis 12:7 And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him. Genesis 17:1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him.... Genesis 18:1 And the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre. Genesis 26:2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of. Genesis 26:24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not. Genesis 32:30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. Genesis 35:9 And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him. Genesis 48:3 And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan. Exodus 3:16 The LORD God ... appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you. Exodus 4:5 That they may believe that the LORD God ... hath appeared unto thee. Exodus 6:3 And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob.... Exodus 24:9-11 Then went up Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. And they saw the God of Israel ... They saw God, and did eat and drink. Exodus 33:11 And the Lord spake to Moses face to face, as a man speaketh to his friend. Exodus 33:23 And I will take away my hand, and thou shalt see my backparts. Numbers 14:14 For they have heard that thou Lord art among this people, that thou Lord art seen face to face. Deuteronomy 5:4 The Lord talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire. Deuteronomy 34:10 And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. Judges 13:22 And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God.
46. Bush , that's BS
charles ,   petach tikva   (08.07.07)
Yes the survivors can truly point out his love . They can thank him for loving them so much that they are left without mother , father , brothers and sisters . Great love indeed . And you can still believe this BS ?
47. Kissing mezuzot
aline ,   Kfar Saba   (08.07.07)
This is insane. It's a lot more contagious to touch a doorknob or talk on a phone after a person with the flu. When do conservative Jews ever really listen to their rabbis anyway?
48. Leading to Shomer Negiah
Dovid ,   USA   (08.07.07)
Perhaps Rabbi Roth will now advocate that all conservative Jews become Shomer Negiah since kissing and shaking hands probably involve a greater risk of infectious disease.
49. BEING LEFT WITHOUT A FAMILY
BUSH ,   USA   (08.07.07)
Doesn't necessarily mean an only survivor is not loved because then he would have been dead too. If he is still alive after all that then he must be definitely loved. As to those murdered, they are too very loved. They did not have to pass through Hell at all because they died Al Kiddush Hashem. As for the children that died they get 2 hours with Hashem everyday to learn Torah together as the Talmud says. Question: If those murdered are happy and in peace enjoying Heaven and eachother why aren't you happy for them. Question: and if you don't believe in the after life then this life would not be very fair to say the least filled with corruption and death to innocent young citizens. So why should anyone be good. Those murdered are not gone forever. They are not lost except from you. Just like you are still here so are they.
50. M Hartley I am not very learned but there are books
BUSH ,   USA   (08.07.07)
that explain on this subject. The most I can say because it is profound is: G-d said No man will see me and live. This refers to real lfe. Nobody physical can see G-d and live. Whenever the Torah says the Lord appeared unto him it means through a prophecy which happen through dreams or visions like it says in Numbers 12: 6. On the other hand when it came to Moses it does not say "appeared". Since Moses was on a higher level whenever he needed to speak with G-d he did not have to wait for G-d to appear to him through a vision or that night. See Numbers 22: 19 & 20 but rather called unto G-d and G-d answered him which is like a man speaks to his friend or in other words face to face and not through an angel messenger of G-d like you brought in Judges or in Genesis 32:30 and not through dreams or visions but direct communication. Hope this answers your questions some what. Good day
51. Bush , i'll prefer them loved and living
charles ,   petach tikva   (08.07.07)
instead of being happy for them being in "heaven" , i would prefer to be happy with them , HERE ON EARTH . Very loved ? in the memory of the survivors , but not of what you explain as being your god .
52. It's dirty, disgusting and primitive...yuch!
Danielle ,   centre   (08.07.07)
53. Charles
BUSH ,   USA   (08.07.07)
But noone lives on Earth forever anyway. We all die and noone can escape it. Some die old others young. You anyway should be happy to be alive and them in heaven but you should also make sure that they are happy with you so when the time comes and they see you, you can say you lived like a complete Jew just like they died as one.
54. kissing the mezuzah
Orthodox Rabbi ,   USA   (08.08.07)
That Conservative rabbi is an Am Haaretz.
55. #45 M. Hartley: I believe your question is how can people...
Rivkah   (08.08.07)
see God and yet they perish if they see God. God the Father and his son walked in the Garden of Eden, but when sin entered into the world, the face of God the Father was hidden from people. After that people who saw "God" were acutally seeing the son of God who is the mediator between an offended God and offending humans. The son covered the sins of mankind with his blood for Gentiles. For Jews, the covenant for a Messiah to come in glory at Armageddon is their covering. For Gentiles and Jews who wish to be among the grafted on branch rather than the root of the tree of salvation, the Messiah cam as a servant and shed his blood for them, too. If the killing of Yeshua had not happened, no Gentiles could go to heaven. Gentiles are not thankful to the Jews and the Romans and the family of Yeshua for slaying him. Gentiles will be punished for their unthankfulness and hatred of Jews when the Messiah comes in glory.
56. Bush
charles ,   petach tikva   (08.08.07)
I agree that nobody lives for eternity on earth . That's also the first time that you write something true and reasonable . Well i don't believe in a future life . So i do not expect to see parents in "heaven" , nor do i believe that they will see or meet me there . I'd liked it very much if i had see them here . The only thing you do for sure when dying is that you feed ants . And that's not a stupid belief .
57. Charles
BUSH ,   USA   (08.08.07)
Do you also believe Hitler Y"S will not be punished for his deeds or someone like Schindler rewarded for his deeds. According to what you're saying any man can do what pleases him in his life so if one can get away with murder why not kill. If one can get away with robbing a bank why not steal. Take the risk what are the chances of getting caught. If everyone thought like you Charles there would be no world to live in anymore. It is fear of G-d that kept people in line for 5000 years not your ideas Charles.
58. Read my tb's BUSH , don't distord !!!
charles ,   petach tikva   (08.08.07)
No , i never said that a man can do what he wants . He has the freedom to do what he wants , but his freedom ENDS were other's freedom begins . So killing a person is not respecting this , you can't take this person's freedom to live . I can listen to my prefered music so loud that i want , but my neighboors may not be disturbed by this . Hitler is death , that's the end for him . Schindler is also death , but "lehavdil" he is remembered as a good man . If you need religious laws to behave correctly , if you behave correctly only because your fear for your future in "heaven" , well then in my eyes you are not a good person . A good person acts as i do , not out fear for a "god" , not out fear for the police , but out respect of other's freedom to live without to be harmed by my actions . That's the difference between a decent person , and a "religious" one . PS There are of course GOOD religious people , who act in the same way as i do , not taking other's right to have their freedom . Now if you understand this : OVER and OUT . I don't need to read more of your BS
