1. I was going to dismiss this column
Kevin G ,   Oregon   (08.10.07)
as just another attempt to justify the unjustifiable, until I got to that neat little sentence: "several hundred Jewish settlers who over the years have taken over markets, houses and shops based on the argument of "return of Jewish expropriated property." Such reasoning (?) should be of interest to all Jews who claim stolen Jewish property in Europe. What a quaint notion, to try to recover what was stolen by means of violence and pogroms... Doesn't the historical presence up to last century of Jews in Hevron mean anything at all? Doesn't their right to their property rank as legitimate as that of European Jews?
2. Media war against the settlers is not working
Canadian Otter   (08.10.07)
More and more people are turning away in disgust at the cowardly behavior of the government that attacks Jews while giving weapons and money to the enemy. There were many more refuseniks than the government acknowledges. "The Maariv daily, in its front-page story Wednesday, reported that 'hundreds of soldiers refused and were reassigned to washing dishes, cleaning tents or helping in the mess hall by their commanders - out of the sites of the cameras.' The report stated that the soldiers who objected to taking part in the Hevron eviction were not just religious hesder students, but many others as well." http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/123328
3. Hebron has always been jewish land
freejay ,   Israel   (08.10.07)
you claim: "the Tomb of the Patriarchs - a Muslim mosque in every sense" How did you come to this ridiculous conclusion?? What a load of lies........go read a history book.
4. Disgraceful journalism
Adam ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.10.07)
There are 10,000 Jews including the city's outskirts. Kiryat Arba for instance is easy walking distance from the tomb and touches the edge of 'Hebron'. The Tomb was a Jewish holy site before a Muslim one. The Muslims believe that Ibrahim is buried in Mecca with Ismael. What are they doing at the Hebron site? Why do they have Yitzkhak's tomb? Most of the building date's to Herrod's time. They just added some Minarets and barred Jews from entering in Mamluk times. Disgusting
5. Disgraceful and malignant - not Gaza but ...Hevron?
Mark ,   Philadelphia   (08.10.07)
6. 5 Hebron sure has always been jewish land.
freedom ,   canada   (08.10.07)
Litani, why dont you take up the plight of the recently evicted Christians in the city of Bethlehem. Whats your stance on that, thought so you likely have nothing to say.. God Bless Israel.
7. I could see the Ynet headlines in 1929
comrade Laika ,   Israel   (08.10.07)
"1929: Fanatic Jews foil Arabs attempt at creating peaceful Hebron" (sarcasm) if you like that check this out: http://www.thepeoplescube.com/red/viewtopic.php?t=797
8. Mr Litani Distorts History.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (08.10.07)
The Cave of Machpelah was a Jewish shrine until the Byzantines built a church on the site. Jewish worship was allowed. After the Arab conquest, the church was converted to a mosque. Initially, Jewish worship was allowed until 1267 when it was forbidden by Baybars, the Mamluk sultan. This follows the pattern of appropriating religious sites by both Christianity & Islam. The did this all over the world. The Cave of Machpelah is associated with the Patriarch Abraham since approx. 1720 BCE & Hebron was the original capital of King David. Despite efforts by Christianity & later Islam to replace Judaism, as they did with countless other religions & peoples, we are still here. When the Romans conquered us, they had no problem transforming our holy sites into Christian churches. When the Arabs conquered, they had no problem turning churches into mosques & forbidding Jewish worship as well, as they have done on the Temple Mount. So, the real question is do we acquiesce in erasing our history? The Tomb of the Patriarch is not a Muslim mosque in ANY sense - truth be said, Muslims have no connexion to Abraham, all myths to the contrary (including our own about Ismael) ...... It is a Jewish site taken first by Christians then by Muslims & has now reverted to it's original status of a Jewish site.
9. The massacre of 1929 wasn't a catalyst, it's the root cause!
Uzi ,   Haifa   (08.10.07)
The only way to sustainable solution is through address and resolution of the issues emanating from the root cause.
10. A look at a "malignant" site
Canadian Otter   (08.10.07)

11. Explosive and malignant
David Ramati ,   Kiriat Arba Hebron   (08.10.07)
Litani hates settlers with the intensity that only a self-hating Jew can generate. The Surgeons of self hate, for which both Amichai and Litani seem to have such regard, will continue to wring their hands in desperation until the Kingdom of Judea replaces the State of Israel, an event while will bring a final end to their brief stay in this world. In the next world they will have to confront their worse nightmare--the living God, who will hold them accountable. Sleep well Litani, while you may.
12. Litany of delusional leftist nonsense.
(08.10.07)
13. This is a very biased article - full of hatred of "settlers"
David Eli Barchas ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.10.07)
Israel's conflict with the Arabs is not about territory, however much the Left might want to believe otherwise. Instead the Arab-Israeli conflict is about 2 things: 1) "honor" killings of Arab muslim women by their closest male relatives (for peace must begin at home); 2) violent jihad taught and encouraged in the Koran and the Hadith. Understand this, and reflect on this.
14. Yehuda Litani - a dhimmi in every sense of the word
Elle   (08.10.07)
"the Tomb of the Patriarchs - a Muslim mosque in every sense - " This article is pure yellow journalism and revisionist history at its finest. I suppose the Kotel was never the wall of our temple only the wall of the Al Aksa, correct? This article is really beyond the pale with the author's ignorant dismissal of our Jewish history. I'm really ashamed.
15. Self-hating Yehuda
Lila ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.10.07)
Why does someone like you, who has some much hate for his own people, live here? Hevron was King David's capitol for 7 years; it is one of Judaism's 4 Holy Cities. And yet you only see the Arabs who flooded into this part of the world at the beginning of the 20th century as rightful owners. There is no Tel Aviv in the Torah, but Hevron is there. What are you doing in Israel, Joe? No way we can call you Yehuda.
16.  The Only Reason Why The Jewish Community Isn`t Enormous
Yishai Kohen ,   YeShA, Israel   (08.10.07)
Is because government after government refuses to allow it to grow. The demand exists but the available housing doesn`t. So what we have here is all of these leftists claiming that it`s just a few Jews living in Hebron that need to be protected (as if the leftists don`t, the northern and southern borders don`t, etc...), when in fact, if the Hebron community would be allowed to grow naturally, then it would be a LOT more secure. Once it becomes more secure, then life for everyone will be better- except for the Arab terrorists.
17. "Muslim mosque in every sense "
avi ,   ny   (08.10.07)
What absolute BS. I guess that the Haggia sophis is a mosque in every sense , and all the buddist and hindu temples that were forcibly converted are mosques in every sense and Litani is a kapo JINO in every sense.
18. Hebron is my land, it was and always
Detroit, US   (08.10.07)
will be jewish. And anybody who dares to give away my land to the enemy - one day will hold you personally responsible. So, better protect my land, so one day I could live there.
19. You simply don't know from where you come
Meir Sebag ,   Paris, France   (08.10.07)
Again a pseudo-intellectual with no basic historical knowledge can wrote that the Patriarchs' tomb is muslim in every sense. And what these jews where doing there for generations long before 1948 ? When someone don't know from he comes, how can he knows where to go ? Pseudo intelectualism.
20. If Hevron is not jewish Land than all the more Tel Aviv etc.

Shame on you Yediot Aharonot! ! To publish such articles of this so called journalist Litani, which are full of hatred and antisemitism. I think that the Israeli left is going completely berserk. Baruch Goldstein is not a "murderer," he is a TERRORIST!
24. #18
(08.10.07)
How is it your land, you're in Detroit! When was the last time someone in your direct lineage lived in Hebron? Unless maybe your family left in 1929, but if your family did not it's not even close to being your land!
25. Explosive and malignant
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (08.10.07)
A good was to describe YNet's constant incitement against "settlers" and Haredim.
26. From #18 to #24

I am from the direct lineage of Jacob, and so the land belogs to me and my brothers only.
27. Surgey
Schvach   (08.10.07)
What is a Mosque doing on the site of the Jewish patriarchs? Ishmael? Sorry, that doesn't work. It sounds to me as though someone could use a good surgical team to perform a much needed brain transplant!
28. WATCH THE EXTREME RIGHT SQUEAL AND SHRIEK

29. I dont understand this Jew-hatred by Israelis

30. David from L.A.: you realy have to get your head
Bobby Solo ,   Italia   (08.11.07)
out of your behind... If you knew any history you'd know that Jews started being in Hebron about 2000 years before Islam was invented and the Kingdom of Israel under David had its Capital in Hebron for 7 1/2 years BEFORE moving to Jerusalem; the Cave of the Patriarchs is the OLDEST STANDING JEWISH BUILDING IN THE WORLD, renovated at the same time and WITH EXACTLY THE SAME STONES with which the Western Wall and ALL THE OTHER WALLS OF THE TEMPLE MOUNT are built. The Arabs built a mosque INSIDE the PRE-EXISTING JEWISH STRUCTURE, just like the Byzantines had built a church, whose roof is still visible from high. In 1267, the Arabs forbade Jewish entrance in the structure, and it was like that until 1967, that is exactly 700 years! Jews lived without interruption in Hebron until 1929, when THE ARABS ASSASSINATED 67 MEMBERS OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY, MAN, WOMEN, CHILDREN, SICK AND ELDERLY, AND INJURED ANOTHER 135. Then the Brits PUNISHED THE JEWS INSTEAD OF THE ARABS - just like Olmert - AND KICKED THE JEWS OUT! The Jews came back HOME to Hebron in 1967. If Jews have no right to Hebron, then Jews have no right to live anywhere! You should get out of there and give L.A. Back to the Mexicans, who certainly have more rights to it than Arabs to Hebron!
