61. to the person who asked me "45: What mentality and attitudes
British Oleh ,   Tel Aviv   (08.19.07)
to the person who asked me "45: What mentality and attitudes? (End) (08.18.07)" - I was meaning the impeccable manners and behaviour of people in Israel. The willingness to go that extra mile and always be honest in everything.
62. 61: Everyone?
Ehud ,   Israel   (08.19.07)
You can find different kinds of people, here and everywhere else. What makes the average person here worse than, say, the UK? Different countries have different cultural standards and habits. Maybe you're used to the stereotypical cold politeness of the Brits? How long has it been since you came to Israel?
63. When did I come to Israel?
British Oleh ,   Tel Aviv   (08.20.07)
1984 and it's not a stereotype, a lot of my native-born Israeli friends complain of the "mentality and attitudes" too I think you'd be blind not to realise the bad name Israelis have abroad, tourists and business-people alike and my point was that if this wasn't a "Jewish" nation, most olim would not come, and if the holy sites were not here, most would have probably joined in the cries to annihilate us - a long time ago.
64. 63: There are bad apples, but... oh, dear.
Ehud ,   Israel   (08.21.07)
Sure, you get the occasional story about a bunch of teenagers or people in their 20s wrecking a hotel room in Cyprus (or something). There's no lack of twats, but it's hardly everyone. I don't like these people either, but when it's not to the extreme I don't see a problem. Again, each country has its own idiosyncrasies. In Israel it's, among other things, outgoingness, hotheadedness, impulsiveness. Conversely, there are positive traits, some of which may be linked to the negative ones. Perhaps in Japan (just an hypothesis) starting a conversation with a stranger on the street is a horrible misconduct. But would you see it as such? I'm pretty sure you'd find the equivalents of you and your friends in other countries too, decrying the deteriorated standards of everyone. In your UK years (assuming you were old enough), didn't you find negatives in the locals? Or perhaps, growing up there, that's became your baseline. Do you think you and your native friends are unique in the local landscape? If you really are, perhaps you just picked a non-representative group that are just as finicky and critical as you are, otherwise you couldn't get along. I suspect you'd find me and my friends "civil" enough, yet we aren't disgusted with the majority of our barbaric fellow citizens. And about "most would have joined in the cries to annihilate us"... Damn. I think you are projecting your totally skewed views. If the only thing between you and wanting to annihilate Israel is Jewishness and holy sites, I think Neturei Karta would be happy to accept you as a member.
