Josh, I have to say, even if your posts are a bit long and prophetic you do speak the truth. brothers and sisters (sorry, is that a christian term of address?!) - akhim and akhayot, surely it IS more important to treat others with respect and live a good life than fulfilling every obscure mitzvah? of course the major ones are there for a reason, but there is a division between those and those others which are essentially talmudic discourse. and we must accept that perhaps we are not all knowing and just because one was born a jew it does not make him "better" than a non-jew or a convert (who, halahically is considered a jew). that is a truly arrogant attitude. as for the stipulation that the mother must be jewish - this has no basis in Torah and in fact in pre-Talmudic times the tribal lineage was determined from the father's side. that is just to say, someone with a jewish father who strives to live a jewish life is no less jewish than someone with a jewish mother who doesn't give a second thought to their heritage. it is a personal matter and the rabbis and religious authorities should seek to strengthen society as well as judaism rather than their own power.

You did not "convert"to a religion. If you want to "convert" to a religion, you go into a Church and say the "sinner's prayer" and accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Most of my American-born friends who made aliyah are also here a long time and they feel the same way I do. I'm sorry you had such a miserable life in Israel, but not everyone feels as you do. Maybe I have less money and a smaller apartment and an older car than I would have had if I had stayed in the States, but so what, those things are not too important. I am truly happy with my life here.
